INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall travel to Somerset on Sunday for the final match of the group stage of the ESMBA Inter County Championship. In the home fixtures Cornwall suffered double defeat with the Premier team going down 11-25 and the A team losing 10-26. A win of 5 or more points will see a match against one of Norfolk, Northants, Essex or Kent. Any other result will see Oxfordshire as the likely opponents.

The Premier Team, regardless of the result against Somerset , will face either Worcestershire, Gloucestershire or Herefordshire in a preliminary round game of the consolation competition on either Saturday 26th or Sunday 27th January at a venue yet to be decided.

Cornwall Short Mat Bowls Press Release:

The first of the Inter Area League matches took place on Sunday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

The West Area, winners of the league for the past 2 years, were hoping for a successful start to this years campaign as they took on the East. However, it was the East Area who took the victory on the day by 22 points to 14. The main difference between the 2 sides were the pairs, with the east claiming a maximum 8 points from these 4 games.

The Central Area, still the only team other than the West to hold the league title, looked to take an early lead over their rivals as they took on the undoubted underdogs in the competition, the North Area. The Central Area were always the favourites for this match and although the North managed to win 2 games in the 2nd session to draw it 4-4, the central claimed maximum scores in all of the other sessions. The final score of 32 points to 4 in favour of the Central Area leaves the other teams with a lot of catching up to do.

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 14th OCTOBER 2007

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall enjoyed mixed fortunes in their first away match of the 2007/8 ESMBA Inter County Championship on Sunday in Dorset.

The A team followed up the recent win at home against Dorset with a well fought victory in a match where Cornwall were never behind. The first session saw the points shared with Dorset taking both Fours and Cornwall taking both Singles, Peter Spargo claiming an 21-8 win to give Cornwall a shot’s advantage on the session. The second session again saw the points shared with both counties claiming a Pairs and Triples match apiece. Heavy scoring from the pairing of Lin Stephens & Brian Wakeley, 21-9, and the triple of Sheila Flower, Tony Jago & Francis Walther, 14-6, allowed Cornwall to stretch the shots advantage to over 20.
The third session saw Cornwall cease the initiative winning 3 out of four games with the points registered by both singles players Peter Spargo and Graham Reeve and the rink of Tony Baldwin, Jean Roper, Norman Ward & Derek Newton. Dorset claimed a 5-3 advantage in the final session but the damage had already been done with Cornwall claiming the match by 21 points 178 shots to 15 points 164 shots.

The Premier team suffered a heavy defeat, never really in the match. The only resistance coming from the rink of Margaret Jenkin, Derek Swaby, Nicholas Truscott & Graham Ford winning both games in sessions one and three. Cornwall’s other points came from singles player Nigel Nicholls in the third session and the pairing of Gillian Cawrse & Peter Hore in the final session. The final score being Cornwall 8 points 147 shots Dorset 28 points 201 shots.

St Agnes Open Day

Sourced from West Briton - 23rd August 2007

The club held an open morning on Saturday, August 18 to encourage people to try their hand at this popular indoor sport.

The village has three teams. One, The Cuckoos in the Premier League, and two, the Gulls and the Choughs, in the First Division of the Central League.

Many people took the challenge to enjoy a free 'roll-up', and tea or coffee and biscuits .

The morning was well supported, and the raffle, with prizes donated by club members and many of the local shops, together with a cake stall, and locally produced vegetables, fruit and plants, raised over £200 for club funds.

BOWLS CLUB AID WILL BE FIRST IN THE COUNTRY

Sourced from West Briton - 23rd August 2007

09:00 - 23 August 2007

Mabe Short Mat Bowls Club has secured two grants towards the cost of a machine which will make life easier for members. The club has been awarded just over £1,000 from Kerrier's Community Grant Scheme and a further £2,780 from the Lottery's Awards for All coffers.

The money will go towards the £4,000 needed to buy an Electrowind, a electric short mat carpet storage and handling unit. The shortfall will be made up by club, which has been holding various fundraising events. The machine will be one of the first manufactured in this country.

Club secretary Keith Bryant said: "Mabe Indoor Bowls Club, like many other clubs, has a large number of elderly members who like to bowl both for fun and competitively during the winter months.

"The main item of equipment used indoors is a bowls mat, 45 feet long and six feet wide. Mabe Community Hall accommodates two of these mats for competitive matches.

"The mats are very heavy and need to be rolled up and stored after every bowling session, somewhat difficult for the elderly members two to three times a week. Therefore the committee decided it would try to obtain some assistance for the membership, to allow all the present members and hopefully some new members, to take part without too much stress or injury."

That is where the Electrowind machine comes in. The new unit is due to be commissioned at a short ceremony at Mabe Community Hall on September 7.

Club's delight at grants

Sourced from Falmouth Packet - 22nd August 2007

MABE Short Mat Bowls Club have just been advised they have been successful in grant awards from both Kerrier District Council Community Grant Scheme and the Awards for All Programme from the Lottery Grants for Local Groups.

Mabe Indoor Bowls Club, like many other clubs, have a large number of elderly members who like to both bowl for fun and competitively during the winter months.

The main item of equipment used indoors is a bowls mat 45 feet long and six feet wide; Mabe Community Hall accommodates two of these mats for competitive matches. The mats are very heavy and need to be rolled up and stored after every bowling session, somewhat difficult for the elderly members two to three times a week.

The committee, therefore, decided they would try to obtain some assistance for the membership, to allow all the present members and hopefully some new members to take part without too much stress or injury.

The club decided it needed to purchase a reliable low maintenance, user-friendly machine that was mains powered, an "Electrowind," to help its members at a cost of almost £4,000.

The club has been awarded just over £1,000 from Kerrier's community grant scheme, and £2,780 from the "Awards for All" scheme. This leaves a small shortfall to be made up by the club. The members have during recent months run various fund raising events to obtain the necessary balance, and have now ordered the new "Electrowind" to be delivered for the start of the new winter season.
