CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 31 March 2017

The Western Area League came to a dramatic conclusion on Thursday evening when Holmans hosted Newlyn Trinity Jowsters at Blaythorne Camborne.

Jowsters went into the match 6 points ahead of the hosts but behind on shot difference with 6 points on offer for the match.

In the first of the two games Elise Daniell, Janet Williams, John Peters and David Studden for the hosts were never headed recording a 12-6 win against Jowsters' Rose Dyer, Robert James, Ray Jeffery & Percy Tripp.  

The second game saw Kathryn Watson, Chris Selby, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore for the hosts start slowly to trail 1-8 after four of the twelve ends against Ronald Thomas, John Thomas, Mike Dyer and Nigel Nicholls.  The home team scored on the next four ends, including a count of 5 on the seventh end to lead 10-8 after eight ends.  The ninth end saw Jowsters take 1 before Holmans took scores of 1 and 2 on the tenth and eleventh ends to lead by four going into the last end.  A tight head of bowls on the final end left Jowsters only able to pick up one shot to give the game win to Holmans 13-10.  Holmans claim the West Division title on shot difference +308 shots to Jowsters +284 shots after both teams finished on 116 points and 37 games won.

Holmans will represent the West area in the Bebbington Cup on Sunday when the will compete against the other area league winners Withiel Oaks (Central), Boscastle (North) and Landrake (East).  At the same time the Division One winners will also compete against each other with Larrigan (Penlee) for the West, St Agnes Gulls for Central, Lanreath Reds for East and Poughill for North taking part.

On Sunday afternoon club champions will gather at Carnmoggas for the Champion of Champions competition.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Next weekend Cornwall will be well represented at the English Short Mat Bowling Association National Championships.  The bowlers who have qualified are

Singles (Thursday) Nigel Nicholls and Karen Watson.

Pairs (Friday) Peter Hore & Karen Watson and Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly.

Fours (Saturday) Elise Daniell, David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson and Richard Brown, Sandra Worton, John Worton & Chris Roberts.

Triples (Sunday) Ray Jeffery, Nigel Nicholls & Gill Cawrse and David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson.

Elise Daniell, David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson also competed in the Mixed Fours on the 25th March reaching the Semi Finals where they narrowly lost 5-6 to a team from the West Midlands.  They came through the group stages unbeaten recording wins of 11-3, 8-6 & 13-5.  In the last 16 they won 20-2 against a team from Surrey and in the Quarter Finals an Essex team was defeated 6-4.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall's Short Mat bowlers made history competing in the final of the ESMBA Inter County Championship for the first time against three time former winners West Midlands at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

The first session of Singles and Pairs was drawn with both counties winning a game apiece in each discipline.  In Singles Nigel Nicholls won 18-6 and in the Pairs Karen Watson & David Studden won 16-6.  Peter Hore lost his Singles 7-14 and John Worton & Chris Roberts lost 5-14 in the Pairs.

The second session proved to be potentially decisive with West Midlands winning three of the four Triples and Fours games.  For Cornwall Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams came back from 3-9 down to win 16-9 in the Triples.  Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse lost 9-13 in the other Triple and in the Fours both went down by a two shot margin.  Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Neil Gribble 9-11 and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly 10-12 losing on the last end of the game.   At the halfway point in the match West Midlands led 10 points to 6.

The third session saw Cornwall win both Singles, Nigel Nicholls 14-9 and Peter Hore 17-8 to comfortably take the bonus points.  In the Pairs John Worton & Chris Roberts lost 10-12 in a last end decider and Karen Watson & David Studden were also defeated 6-16 giving West Midlands the bonus points.  With the session points shared the progressive score moved onto Cornwall 12 points West Midlands 16 points.

The final session saw three of the four games and the bonus points in both disciplines go down to the wire.  In the Triples Kevin Williams completed a double on the day winning 11-5 but with Gill Cawrse losing 8-20 after dropping four on the last end the bonus points for the Triples went to West Midlands by a margin of three.  In the fours Neil Gribble drew 9-9 and Luke Jolly suffered last end defeat going down 14-15 to give the West Midlands the bonus points by 5 shots.  The final score Cornwall 15 points 179 shots West Midlands 25 points 179 shots.

After the match the West Midlands captain Josh Hale gave credit to Cornwall for giving his team a hard fought match admitting that they had perhaps underestimated the Cornwall team.

COUNTY FINALS
Before Sunday's ICC final two County Titles were decided at Carnmoggas on Saturday.  John Worton claimed the Two Wood Singles defeating Karen Watson in the final.  Neil Gribble & Gill Cawrse won the Four Wood Pairs final against Martin Boraston & Gary Davey.

INTER AREA MATCH
This weekend see's the annual Inter Area Match contested on Sunday at Carnmoggas with teams of 32 representing each of the four league areas.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's Short Mat Bowls Premier Team made history on St Piran's day by winning a place in the English Short Mat Bowling Association Inter County Championship final for the first time defeating  West Sussex at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club in the semi finals.

Cornwall started the match well taking an advantage in the first session winning two games and drawing one.  In the Singles Peter Hore picked up two on the last end to win 15-14 with Nigel Nicholls losing 10-16.  In the Pairs Karen Watson & David Studden won 15-11 and John Worton & Chris Roberts drew 13-13.

A shared second session saw a win apiece in both the Triples and Fours.  For Cornwall Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams won 12-9 and in the Fours Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Neil Gribble won 11-4.  Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse lost 11-12 in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly lost 6-8 in the Fours.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall led by 9 points to 7.

Cornwall extended their lead in the third session with wins for Nicholls in the Singles 16-10, Worton & Roberts 17-13 and Watson & Studden 16-14 in the Pairs.  Hore lost in the other singles 11-16.  Cornwall took the Pairs bonus points with West Sussex taking the Singles to move the match score  on to Cornwall 17 West Sussex 11.

With all to play a tense final session was played out with Cornwall coming out on top.  In Triples Williams won 17-10 with Cawrse losing by a repeat of her morning score 11-12.  Cornwall secured the bonus points from the Triples.  In the Fours Gribble won 12-9 and Jolly won 11-8 also securing bonus points.  Taking 10 points from the final session Cornwall claimed an historic 27 points and 204 shots to 13 points 179 shots victory.

Cornwall return to Daventry on Sunday (12th March) for the final where three times former champions (93/94, 99/00 & 03/04) West Midlands provide the opposition after they defeated Norfolk 28-12 in the other semi final.
