CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall face Dorset at Carnmoggas in the first of two matches in three weeks that could prove key to determining the final placings in the Premier section of the South West group in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

Dorset currently lead the Premier section with 74 points ahead of Cornwall on 64 points and Devon on 54 points.  Cornwall have ground to make up in the A Team section where Dorset lead on 73 points ahead of Somerset on 62, Devon on 60 and Cornwall on 45.

The match gets underway at 1000 and is expected to conclude at around 1600.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Last weekend three local bowlers travelled to Skein in Norway to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open.

Nigel Nicholls won four out of five games in Group Three to progress into the Cup knockout.  In the Last 64 he defeated Swede Tobias Egestrand 19-4 before losing on a tie break in the last 32 to another Swede Christer Nordin.

Peter Hore was unbeaten in Group Twelve with four wins and a draw to top the group and earn a bye into the last 32 where he lost 4-19 to Irish bowler Mark Beattie.

Elise Daniell came back from defeat in her first group game to win her other four to top Group Thirteen and also earn a bye into the last 32 where she defeated Mark Chittock 12-8.  In the Last 16 Elise lost to Nordin 5-11.

In the World Rankings, which take into account the past 12 tournaments,  Nigel moves back into the top five on 763.13 points.  Peter climbs nine places to 34th with 465 points and Elise climbs eight places to 36th with 450.50 points.

The SMPT take a break from Singles competitions with the next competitions being the World Fours on Saturday 30th November and World Pairs on Sunday 1st December.  The next Singles event is the British Open over the weekend of 11th and 12th January.

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
On Saturday the local qualifiers for the National Pairs, Triples and Over 55's Pairs will be played at Carnmoggas.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall faced Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  

The Premier Team started slowly with one win in the first session, Peter Hore winning 11-9 in the Singles.  In the second session the points were shared with wind for Sandra Worton, Percy Tripp & Kevin Williams 19-10 in the Triples and Nicholas Truscott, Gill Smith, Martin Boraston & Luke Jolly 18-9 in the Fours.

The third session saw Cornwall hit 20 shots on three mats as they took 10 of the 12 points on offer.  Nigel Nicholls won 21-5 in the Singles, Elise Daniell & Callum Beale 20-6 and John Worton & David Studden 24-6 in the Pairs securing the bonus points in both disciplines.  The final session saw Somerset again hit back leaving Cornwall to claim one win by Williams' Triples 17-12 also taking the bonus points.  The final match score Cornwall 20 points 212 shots Somerset 20 points 182 shots

The A Team also started slowly with just one win for Lynn Smith & Alan Holden in the Pairs 15-10.  In the second session Roger Hailey, Mike Webster & Brenda Sleep won 12-11 in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Carole Dodd, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell won 12-10 in the Fours.

The third session saw Cornwall claim 9 points.  Mark Payne winning 22-6 in the Singles which secured the bonus points.  The the Pairs Austen Runnalls stepped in to replace Lynn Smith and with Alan Holden recorded 28-2 win whilst Dianne Shorthouse & David Topliffe drew 11-11 securing the bonus points.  Only one win came Cornwall's way in the final session with Heidi Kerr, Bob Smith & Graham Ford winning 12-7 in the Triples.  The final match score Cornwall 17 points 188 shots Somerset 23 points 190 shots.

In the other South West group games Devon defeated Dorset Premier 25-15 with Dorset winning the A fixtures 14-26 at ISCA Indoor Bowling Club in Exeter.  Cornwall are next in action on Sunday 3rd November when they complete home fixtures with group leaders Dorset the visitors to Carnmoggas.

COUNTY TRIPLES
On Saturday 90 players took part in the County Triples at Carnmoggas with teams split into seven groups, the group winners and one best runner up going through to the county finals.

Group One was topped by Michael Liddicoat, Glynn Roy & Callum Beale with 6 points +22 shots.  Group Two winners were Betty Temple Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 6 +21.  In Group Three Nathan Waters, Ken Horrell (Withiel) & Luke Jolly (Holmans) qualified with 4 +10 after losing their last game.  Group Four produced the tightest finish of the day with Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) drawing the final game against Martin Boraston, Caroline & Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) 8-8 to go through with 5 +20 and the Duloe trio taking the highest runners-up spot with 5 +19.

In Group Five Lynn Smith, Bob Smith (Porthleven) & Frank Plummer (St Ives) won a last game decider to finish on 6 +21.  Group Six saw Richard Kerr, Dennis Shorthouse & Neil Gribble (Landrake) win the group decider to finish on 6 +22.  In Group Seven a 7-6 win in the final game for Louise Williams, Nicola Ellis & Fran Phillips (Helston) saw the go through, finishing on 6 +6.

The eight qualifiers return to Carnmoggas for the finals on Sunday 19th January.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Over this coming weekend three local bowlers are travelling to Norway to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open competition.

Nigel Nicholls is drawn in Group Three where he will face Debbie Pye (ENG), Johan Anderson (SWE), PJ Gallagher (IRE), Tommy Dahlgren (SWE) and Ali Akbar (UAE).  Nigel's match against Gallagher is scheduled for broadcast on the SMPT Facebook page at around 1530 UK time on Saturday.

Peter Hore is drawn in Group Twelve against John Pye (ENG) Sebastian Jonson (SWE), Stephen Gale (IOM), James Trott (ENG) and Mio Kontic (ENG).

Elise Daniell is drawn in Group 13 and faces Jom Broberg (SWE), Anne Kasa (NOR), Elin Johansson (NOR), Pete Skoglund (SWE) and Anne Lene Kristoffersen (NOR)

The Short Mat Players Tour organisers will be providing full coverage of the event throughout the two days with regular results updates and live match coverage on social media channels.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday faced Devon in there first home match of this season's ESMBA Inter County Championship.  The Premier Team coming of the back of a win away to Somerset were looking for a good result against their cross border opposition.  The first session of Singles and Pairs was shared 4 points each with wins for Nigel Nicholls in the Singles (18-9) and Elise Daniell & Callum Beale in the Pairs (22-6).  The second session saw Devon take a 5-3 advantage, Cornwall's points scored by Dennis Shorthouse, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey in the Triples (19-3) and Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Chris Roberts & Neil Gribble in the Fours (9-9).

The third session proved decisive to the outcome of the match with Cornwall taking 10 of the 12 points on offer.  Wins for Peter Hore in the Singles (11-9), Daniell & Beale(13-11) and John Worton & David Studden (22-5) in the Pairs saw Cornwall also collect the bonus points in both disciplines.  The final session saw Cornwall secure the match win with wins for Percy Tripp, Sandra Worton & Kevin Williams in the Triples (14-7) and Reeves, Kerr, Roberts & Gribble in the Fours (14-7) with the Triples bonus points also secured the final match score Cornwall 23 points 203 shots Devon 17 points 163 shots.

The A Team suffered a second successive defeat going down to a 24 points to 16 and 208 shots to 178 defeat.  The first session one win for Lynn Smith & Alan Holden in the Pairs (14-11).  The second session brought 5 points for Cornwall with wins for Heidi Kerr, Bob Smith & Graham Ford in the Triples (13-8) and Meg Horrell, Carol Dodd, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell in the Fours (10-9).  A draw for Leonard Lee, Jon Read, Caroline Trubshaw & John Dodd (11-11) brought the score at the halfway point in the match to 7-9.

The third session saw Cornwall take 5 points with a win for Smith & Holden (15-10) and a draw for Dianne Shorthouse & David Topliffe (15-15) in the Pairs securing the bonus points.  The final session saw a solitary win for Roger Hailey, Mike Webster & Brenda Sleep in the Triples (19-14) which helped secure the bonus points.  The final match score Cornwall 16 points 178 shots Devon 24 points 208 shots.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday 37 players took part in the County Two Wood Singles at Carnmoggas with play split over morning and afternoon sessions with four qualifiers from each going forward to the finals at the end of the season.

In the morning the group winners were Martin Boraston (Duloe) 6 points +16 shots, Elise Daniell (Holmans) 4 +16, Fran Phillips (Helston) 5 +14 and John Dodd (St Newlyn East) 6 +18.  The afternoon group winners were Mark Payne (Penzance) 6 +16, Luke Jolly (Withiel) 6 +20, Peter Hore (Holmans) 6 +28 & Dave Balow (Marazion) 6 +9.

COUNTY TRIPLES
Thirty One teams are entered in the County Triples on Saturday at Carnmoggas with play getting under way at 0900.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Langport to face Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  The Premier Team came away with a 21 points to 19 and 195 shots to 189 victory.  The first two sessions were shared 8 points each with Cornwall's points scored by Nigel Nicholls in the Singles (16-10), Elise Daniell & Callum Beale in the Pairs (11-7), Percy Tripp, Sandra Worton & Kevin Williams in the Triples (9-8) and Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Chris Roberts & Neil Gribble (10-7) in the Fours.  

Cornwall took the lead in the match in the match taking 8 of the 12 points on offer in the third session with wins for Nicholls (18-8), Daniell & Beale (12-11) and John Worton & David Studden (20-12) also securing the Pairs shots bonus points.  The final session a win for Tripp, Worton & Williams (19-10) secured the Triples bonus points and a draw for Nathan Waters, Nicholas Truscott, Martin Boraston & Luke Jolly (9-9) ensured Cornwall came away with the match win.

The A Team went down to a 28 points to 12 and 241 shots to 150 defeat.  In the first session Mark Payne came from behind to take a win in the Singles (13-12).  The second session saw a win in the Triples for Roger Hailey, Mike Webster & Brenda Sleep (14-10).  Leonard Lee, Jon Read, Caroline Trubshaw & John Dodd won in the Fours (10-5) to see Cornwall trail 6 points to 10 at the halfway point in the match.

The afternoon session saw a pair of wins in the Singles, Payne (14-10) and Alan Trubshaw (14-8) however the shots bonus points were out of reach.  The final session saw Cornwall claim a further 2 points with a win for Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Graham Ford in the Triples (14-13)

COUNTY MIXED FOURS
On Saturday 15 teams competed in the County Mixed Fours Competition at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.  The teams were split into 4 groups with the group winners going forward to a knockout competition.

In the semi finals Cynthia Storer, Carol Ford, Tony Jago & Chris Roberts (Ladock) defeated Dot Nunn, Yolanda Featherstone, Des Pengelly & Alan Holden (Saltash Kernow) 12-6.  Julie Edwards, Howard McCormack, Wendy Carne & David Balow (Penlee) claimed a last bowl 7-5 win against Lynn Smith, Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans).  Robert’s Four went on to win the final by a comfortable 15-4 margin.

SUMMER LEAGUE FINAL

The two legged Summer League final between Nomads and Blisland was played recently with the first leg at Newlyn and second at Blisland.

At Newlyn, Nomads (Percy Tripp, Elise Daniell & Nigel Nicholls) were never headed by Blisland (Betty Temple Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthew) winning 14-9 on the night.  In the second leg at Blisland Peter Hore replaced Percy Tripp in the Nomads line up.  In the early stages Nomads extended their lead before Blisland got back into the match on the 7th end with a score of 7 to move into a lead of 2 overall.  Scores of 2 and 3 on the 9th & 11th ends restored Nomads lead in the match with four ends to play.  Going into the final end Nomads led by 1 on aggregate but it was Blisland who picked up three on the last end to take a 27-25 win over the two legs.

COUNTY 2 WOOD SINGLES

On Saturday the County Two Wood Singles will be played at Carnmoggas with 24 bowlers due to play in Morning and Afternoon sessions to determine 8 qualifiers for the County Finals.
