COUNTY FOURS
On Sunday 22 teams took part in the County Fours at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.  Drawn into 1 group of 6 and 4 groups of 4 each team played 3 games with the group winners and three best runners up qualifying for the finals later in the season.

Group One winners were Leonard Lee, Mark Slack, Stephen Wilson & Chris Hall (Duloe) with 6 points +24 shots.  Second placed Neil Gribble, Graham Reeves, Phil Searle and Christopher Mortimore (Landrake) claimed one of the runners up spots with 4 +11.

Group Two winners were Steve Smith, John Worton, Sandra Worton & Carol Dodd (St Newlyn East) with 4 +11.  Second placed Alan Trubshaw, Caroline Trubshaw, Martin Borsaston & John Read also qualified with 4 +10.

Group Three winners were Nigel Nicholls, Morgan Lees, Ray Jeffery & Simon Lees (Newlyn Trinity) with 6 +20.  Second placed Mark Williams (Lanteglos), John Moger (Boscastle), Chris Jennings & Elieen Williams (Lanteglos) missed out on a runners up spot with 3 -5.

Group Four winners were Peter Hore, Luke Jolly, Elise Daniell & Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) with 4 +20.  Second placed Robert D'Agostino, Nick Trewin, Keith Nicholls & Andy Jiggins (Kensey Vale) were the other team to miss out on a runners up spot with 4 +9.

Group Five winners were Brenda Sleep, Graham Bickle, Eileen Taylor & Graham Sleep (Dobwalls) with 6 +8.  Second placed Richard Kerr, Dennis Shorthouse, Dianne Shorthouse & Heidi Kerr (Landrake) also qualified with 4 +11.

The eight teams who have qualified for the finals will return to Carnmoggas on Saturday 16th March for the finals.

ESMBA OPEN FOURS
On Saturday 4 teams from Cornwall took part in the ESMBA Open Fours at the Manor House Hotel, Okehampton.  None of the local teams reached the later stages of the knockouts.  Unfortunately no more details are known at the time of writing the report.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The first of two days of National Championship Qualifiers takes place at Carnmoggas on Saturday with qualifiers for the Fours, Mixed Fours and Singles to be determined.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall Premier & A Teams play their first home matches of the Inter County Championship season with Dorset the visitors to Carnmoggas.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR NORWEGIAN OPEN
Over the past weekend five local bowlers made the trip to Skein in Norway to take part in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open which featured an entry of 150 bowlers drawn from across Europe.

David Studden (Holmans) was unbeaten in group thirteen to qualify straight through to the last 32 in the Cup competition.  David's results in the group stages were Andre Malmgren (NOR) 12-5, Monika Borgo (SWE) 18-3, Nico Segers (BEL) 14-7, Bjarne Andersson (SWE) 15-5 and Ben Holbrook (ENG) 12-6.  Into the Cup competition David defeated Kjell Bjerkseth (NOR) 12-7 in the last 32 before losing 4-9 to Paul Doherty (IRE).  David comes away from the event with 105 ranking points to lie 194th in the world rankings and 63rd in the Order of Merit.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) was also unbeaten in group twenty one to go straight through to the last 32 in the Cup competition.  Nigel's results in the group stages were Thomas Olsson (SWE) 25-3, Steven Roberts (ENG) 11-7, John Egil Stanes (NOR) 21-6, Mio Kontic (ENG) 20-7 and Agnetha Olsson (SWE) 20-3.  Into the Cup competition Nigel lost to Sandar Johansen (SWE) 8-10.  Nigel comes away from the event with 95 ranking points moving up two places to sixth in the world rankings and three places to 7th in the Order of Merit.

Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) lost his first game in group twenty three before winning four in a row to qualify for the Cup competition.  Steve's results in the group stages were Eroll Morina (SWE) 8-12, Gunn Ellen Bekkevold (NOR) 8-4, Johan Andersson (SWE) 10-8, Daniel Svedin (SWE) 28-3 and Rune Lifjell (NOR) 12-10.  Steve lost in the last 64 to Sandar Johansen (SWE) 14-4.  Steve scored 82 ranking points over the weekend to lie 209th in the world rankings and 55th in the Order of Merit.

Peter Hore (Holmans) started with a draw in group twenty five followed by three wins.  A loss on Sunday morning left Peter in third place and into the Plate competition.  Peter's results in the group stages were Paul Doherty (IRE) 11-11, Tobias Egestrand (SWE) 15-6, Robin Andre Jensen (NOR) 18-6, Bengt Runholm (SWE) 11-8 and Peter Sayer (ENG) 5-12.  Peter enjoyed a strong run in the Plate competition.  Winning 16-3 against Paul Perrson (SWE) in the last 32, 18-6 against Rune Kløvtveit (NOR) in the last 16, 14-2 against Andrew Cockcroft (IRE) in the Quarter Finals, 12-10 against Daniel Wennberg (SWE) in the Semi Finals.  The final against Paul Seaman (ENG) was closely contested,  halfway through Peter led 5-4, Paul took 2 on the 7th end with Peter taking 2 back on the 8th end to lead 7-6.  Paul moved into the lead with 3 on the 9th end and a further 1 on the 10th end.  Peter pulled back two on the 11th end to trail 9-10. On the final end Peter held a game winning position however Paul used the last bowl of the game to take the shot and the Plate title by 9 shots to 11.  Peter scored 60 ranking points over the weekend to move up four places to 33rd in the world rankings and thirteen places to 28th in the Order of Merit.   

Elise Daniell (Holmans) started with a couple of losses in group eight  going on to earn two wins and a draw to qualify for the Plate competition.  Elise's results in the group stages were Kjell Bjerkseth (NOR) 10-13, Nathan Haire (IRE) 8-12,  Eren Wangen (NOR) 15-5, Ingvar Nelson (SWE) 8-8 and Leif Linder (SWE) 15-4.  Elise lost in the last 64 of the Plate Competition to Rune Kløvtveit (NOR) 5-16.  Elise scored 32 ranking points over the weekend to retain 34th place in the world rankings and dropping 4 places in the Order of Merit.

The next SMPT Singles Tournament is the British Open over the weekend of 6th and 7th January.


ESMBA / TLH OPEN COMPETITIONS
Also played last weekend were the ESMBA/TLH Open Pairs and Fours Competitions at the Torquay Leisure Hotels complex.  Duloe, Alan Trubshaw, Martin Boraston, Mark Slack and Caroline Trubshaw were runners up in the plate competition of the Fours.

ESMBA OPEN FOURS
This coming weekend the ESMBA bring their Open Fours Competition to the Manor House Hotel at Okehampton, Devon.

Four local teams have entered the competition

Dennis & Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) & Steve Williamson (Luxulyan) are joined by David Glennerster (Devon).  Peter Hore, Elise Daniell (Holmans) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) are joined by Anthony Fautley (Essex).  John & Sandra Worton, Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) & Tony Jago (Withiel).  Martin Boraston, John Reed, Alan & Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe).

COUNTY FOURS
On Sunday the County Fours will be played at Carnmoggas with 24 teams entered.  Play gets under way at 0900 and expected to run through to around 1600.  The top 8 teams will qualify for the County Finals and earn County Points.

COUNTY TRIPLES
On Saturday 25 teams took part in the first County Competition of the season, the County Triples, at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

The teams were drawn into six groups, one of five and five of four with the six group winners and two best runners up qualifying for the finals later in the season.

Group One was topped by Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble (Landrake) with 4 points +12 shots.  Group Two winners were Elise Daniell, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore (Holmans) with 6 +28.  Bob Banks (Lanteglos), John Moger (Boscastle) & Mark Williams (Lanteglos) topped Group Three with 6 +22.

In a high scoring Group Four top spot was taken by Diane Crocker, Joyce Harding & Shane Aldridge (Luxulyan) with 6 +42.  John Reed, Chris Hall & Leonard Lee (Duloe) took one of the runners up spots with 4 +29.  Group Five winners were Andy Jiggins, Nick Trewin & Robert D'Agostino (Kensey Vale) with 6 +18.  Group Six produced the final two qualifiers with Martin Boraston, Caroline Trubshaw & Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) topping the group with 6 +13.  Graham Luke, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell Withiel took the second runners up spot with 4 +21. 

INTER COUNTY
On Sunday Cornwall's Premier Team made the journey to Wincanton to face Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

Cornwall started well taking two wins and a draw from the first session.  Luke Jolly 15-9 in the Singles, John Reed & Martin Boraston 14-8 and Elise Daniell & David Studden 14-14 in the Pairs scoring the points for Cornwall.  The second session saw Cornwall again take two wins and a draw.  Simon Lees, Mark Slack and Percy Tripp 9-9 in the Triples, Morgan Lees, Ray Jeffery, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble 11-5 and Sandra Worton, John Worton, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore 14-4 in the Fours.  Cornwall led by 10 points to 6 at the interval.

The third session saw three wins for Cornwall.  Luke Jolly 18-7 in the Singles, Elise Daniell & David Studden 12-10 and John Reed & Martin Boraston 16-9 in the Pairs.  Cornwall also secured the bonus points for the Pairs to take an 8-4 advantage for the session and extend their lead in the match to 18 points to 10.

The final session was closely contested with Cornwall taking a win and a draw from the session.  Dennis Shorthouse, Mark Payne & Steve Smith 12-12 in the Triples and Sandra Worton, John Worton, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore 9-8 in the Fours where Cornwall also secured the bonus points. The final match score Somerset 17 points 174 shots - Cornwall 23 points 180 shots.  

In the other South West group match on Sunday Devon hosted Dorset in a match that finished in a 20-20 draw.  After two rounds of matches Dorset and Devon are tied on 28 points with Cornwall on 35 and Somerset on 29.

Whilst Cornwall's A Team had a weekend off Devon won 25-15 against Dorset.  In the A Team Competition Dorset have 33 points from two matches, Devon 25 from one match and Cornwall 22 from one match.

Four bowlers from Duloe will take part in the ESMBA Torquay Leisure Hotels Pairs on Saturday and Fours on Sunday.

The players taking part are Martin Boraston, Mark Slack, Alan Trubshaw & Caroline Trubshaw.

SMTP NORWEGIAN OPEN

Last Sunday the first round of Inter Area League games were played at Carnmoggas with a competitive day's bowling ending with three areas separated by just 2 points with Central on 15, West 14 and East 13, North trail on 6 points.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall's Premier Team will travel to Wincanton to face Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  Two changes to the team that faced Dorset a fortnight ago will see both A Team Singles players Mark Williams and Dennis Shorthouse promoted to cover for unavailable players.  Somerset lost their first fixture at home to Devon by the same score that Cornwall lost to Dorset 12-28.  Cornwall look to this fixture as an opportunity to make up ground in the South West Area table.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Cornwall opened their Inter County Championship campaign with an away trip to Dorset on Sunday.

In the Premier Team match Cornwall started with one win in the first session recorded by Nigel Nicholls in the Singles winning 21-5.  The second session again only produced one win for Cornwall thanks to Austen Runnalls, Mark Payne & Steve Smith in the Triples winning 13-11.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall trailed by 4 points to 12 and 126 points to 92.

Cornwall enjoyed a strong third session winning both Singles, Nigel Nicholls 18-9 and Luke Jolly 12-11 also securing the bonus points.  Elise Daniell & David Studden won 17-8 in the Pairs.  Unfortunately Cornwall didn't pick up any further points in the match to finish with a final score of Dorset 28 points 224 shots Cornwall 12 points 170 shots.

The A Team drew the first session with wins in the Singles for Mark Williams 14-9 and in the Pairs for Leonard Lee & Rita Hancock 13-12.  The second session saw the points shared with Cornwall winning both Fours games.  Heidi Kerr, Steve Williamson, Tony Jago & Brenda Sleep 15-4 and Dianne Shorthouse, Mark Albon, Caroline Trubshaw & David Topliffe 8-7.  At the halfway point in the match the points were shared 8-8 with Cornwall marginally ahead on shots 110 to 101.

The third session saw the game points shared with wins in the Singles for Dennis Shorthouse 20-13 and Carol & John Dodd 16-8 in the Pairs.  Cornwall secured the bonus points in both disciplines to lead the match 16 points to 12.  The final session Cornwall won two games, Phil Searle, Graham Reeves & Alan Trubshaw 11-8 in the Triples and Brenda Sleep's Fours with a repeat of their 15-4 morning score.  Cornwall secured the bonus points on the Fours to win the match by 22 points to 18 and 191 shots to 174.
