Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 25 March 2018

County Championship Finals
The County Championship finals were played at Carnmoggas over the weekend with the County Singles and Fours on Saturday and Pairs and Triples on Sunday.

On Saturday morning the Singles was contested.  In the Quarter Finals Karen Watson (Saltash) defeated Callum Beale (Withiel) 13-10.  Alan Holden (Landrake) won 18-5 against Geoff Maunder (East Taphouse).  Eilse Daniell (Holmans) needed an extra end to defeat Bob Banks (Boscastle) 9-8.  Kevin Williams (Porthleven) won 18-3 against Carolyn Stanley (St Newlyn East).

In the semi finals Holden came from 0-9 down to defeat Watson 15-10 and Daniell defeated Williams 9-6.  Daniell took an early lead in the final against Holden going on to win her first individual county title 10-5.

Saturday afternoon saw the Fours title contested.  In the Quarter Finals Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Lynne Davey & Gary Davey (Landrake) won 12-3 against Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott (Holmans), Callum Beale (Withiel) & Peter Hore (Holmans).  Howard McCormack, Nigel Jelbert (Penlee), Malcolm Daniels (Hayle) & Mark Payne (Penlee) needed an extra end to defeat Lynn Smith, Paul Murphy, Bob Smith (Porthleven) & Frank Plummer (St Ives) 10-9.  Heidi Kerr, Richard Kerr, Dianne Shorthouse & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) won 14-3 against Keith Williams, Mike Richards, David Langsworthy & Beryl Langsworthy (Penlee).  Betty Temple-Smith, Mike Webster, Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) won 8-5 against Robert Rawlings, Lynette Golledge, Brenda Sleep & John Worth (Dobwalls).

I the Semi Finals Davey defeated Payne 10-6 and Matthews won 7-5 against Shorthouse.  Davey won the final against Matthews 12-2.

On Sunday morning the Pairs were contested.  The Quarter Finals saw Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) defeat Ray Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) 10-5.  Bob Banks &  David Topliffe (Boscastle) won 12-3 against Nathan Waters & Luke Jolly (Withiel).  Kath Goodman (Ladock) & Karen Watson (Saltash) won 14-5 against Mark Payne & Howard McCormack (Penlee).  Alan Holden & Des Pengelly (Landrake) won 10-9 against Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans).

The Semi Finals saw Banks & Topliffe take an extra end against Dyer & Williams to win 11-10.  Goodman & Watson won 11-1 against Holden & Pengelly.  A tight final between Banks & Topliffe and Goodman & Watson went down to the final bowl of an extra end with Watson taking the winning shot with the last bowl of the game.

Sunday afternoon saw the Triples played.  The Quarter Finals Bob Banks, John Wakelin & David Topliffe (Boscastle) defeated Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Lynne Davey & Gary Davey (Landrake) 13-9.  David Balow (Marazion), Ray Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) won 12-6 against Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Howard McCormack & Mark Payne (Penlee).  Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) won 16-4 against Eileen Taylor & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls). Val Risdon, Neil Wright & Pam Wright (Lanteglos) progressed with a bye after the withdrawal of their opponents from Ladock.

In the Semi Finals Nicholls defeated Topliffe 8-4 and Williams won 16-2 against Wright.  Nicholls won the final 10-2 against Williams.

Area Leagues
The league program is drawing to a close with the line up for the Bebbington Cup competition on Sunday 8th April is starting confirmed.  Representing the 4 areas will be West - Newlyn Trinity Jowsters, Central - Withiel Oaks, East - Landrake and North - Blisland. 

The battle for Division One in the West see's four teams still in contention for the top spot and second promotion spot, Newlyn Trinity Wreckers, Centenary Spurrs, Marazion Choughs and Porthleven Treza.  St Newlyn East and Luxulyan Golds have finished first and second in Central Division One.  Liskeard and Callington Falcons finish first and second in the East.  In the North, where the two divisions were merged ahead of this season Tintagel have finished highest of the teams that would have been in Division Two had the merger not taken place.  East area division one winner will compete in the league shield.

National Championships
On Saturday 7th April Elise Daniell, David Studden (Holmans), Karen Watson (Saltash) & Peter Hore (Holmans) will compete in the National Mixed Fours at Tamworth Indoor Bowls Centre.

The following weekend the action moves to Melton Mowbray Indoor Bowling Club.  On Thursday 12th Karen Watson & Callum Beale (Withiel) will compete in the Singles.  Friday 13th sees Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gary Davey (Landrake),  Elise Daniell & Luke Jolly (Withiel) and Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Mark Payne (Penlee) compete in the Pairs.

On Saturday 14th Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Luke Jolly & Callum Beale and Elise Daniell, David Studden, Karen Watson & Peter Hore compete in the Fours.  The final day of the championships will see Kevin Williams (Porthleven), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Nigel Nicholls and Elise Daniell, Luke Jolly & Callum Beale compete in the Triples

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 18 March 2018

World Championships
Holman's bowler Peter Hore travelled to Stromstad in Sweden to compete in the World Short Mat Bowls Championship looking to defend the Pairs title he won in Manchester in 2016.  This time around his partner was Norfolk's David Lamb competing in his first World Championships. 

The first two group games were played on Friday with a 17-12 win against Italy and 9-14 defeat to Norway.  Saturday saw the group games continue with first up a 13-13 draw against Wales.  A narrow defeat to India 15-17 was followed up with an 18-10 win against Canada.  Saturday's final game saw a large 23-8 win against Belguim.  Sunday's final group games saw defeat against Ireland 11-15and a win against Sweden 15-9.  The run of results left the pair 5th in group on 9 points.

Inter Area Match
Locally the Inter Area match scheduled for Sunday at Carnmoggas was postponed due to the weather.

County Championship Results
This weekend Carnmoggas hosts the finals of the County Singles and Fours on Saturday and Pairs and Triples on Sunday.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 11 March 2018

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced West Midlands in the re-arranged semi finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

West Midlands won three of the four games in the first session with Elise Daniel and David Studden providing the only win for Cornwall.  The second session proved better for Cornwall with wins for Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams in the Triples and Glynn Roy, Nicholas Truscott, Luke Jolly & Callum Beale and Dennis Shorthouse, Graham Reeve, Richard Kerr & Percy Tripp in the Fours to level the tie 8 points apiece.

Cornwall only won one more game in the match, Nigel Nicholls in the afternoon singles as West Midlands went on to win the match by 30 points to 10 ending Cornwall's run in this years competition.

West Midlands will face Norfolk who defeated Dorset 21-19 in the final on the re-arranged date of 22nd April at Tamworth.  Devon & Somerset will contest the A Team final on the same date after defeating Essex and West Midlands respectively.

Short Mat v Long Mat Challenge
On Saturday at Carnmoggas a team of short mat bowlers took on a team long mat bowlers over 10 ends of each format.  Short Mat were the eventual winners by some margin.

World Championships
Holman's bowler Peter Hore travels to Sweden this weekend in a bid to defend the World Pairs title he won in Manchester in 2016.  He will be partnered by Norfolk's David Lamb this time around.

Singles - Gary Best (Norfolk) and Bronagh Toleman (North Yorks)
Pairs - Sam Harvey & Emily Thomas (Dorset) and Peter Hore (Cornwall) & David Lamb (Norfolk)
Triples - Adam Smith (Cheshire), Ryan Knight (Gloucestershire) & Danny Langdon (North Yorks) and Ross Dunkley, Craig Strong & Adam Easthope (West Midlands)
Fours - Lee Toleman (North Yorks), Anthony Fautley (Essex), Lawrence Moffat (North Yorks & Paul Pomeroy (Devon) and Chris Willies (West Midlands), Dominic Reed (Essex), Alan Jones (West Midlands) & Gareth Davies (Oxfordshire).

Inter Area Match
Locally on Sunday Carnmoggas hosts the Inter Area Match in which teams of 32 representing each area play across eight rinks over six sessions.
