CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE – 23 October 2011

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall have faced Somerset in back to back ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures over the last two weekends, firstly at Taunton on Sunday 16 October with the return at Fowey on Sunday 23.

PREMIER TEAM

Away to Somerset the Cornwall Premier Team were always on the back foot after dropping three out of four games in the first session, Nigel Nicholls in the Singles recording Cornwall’s only win with a score of 17-8.  The second session saw Cornwall again only record a solitary win this time thanks to Elise Daniell, Graham Ford, Gerald Fisher & Chris Roberts 9-6 in the Fours.  At the halfway point Cornwall trailed by 4 points to 12 and 76 shots to 98.

Cornwall’s strongest session of the match came in the afternoon Singles and Pairs with wins in the singles for Nigel Nicholls (24-4) and in the pairs for Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson (12-11) and Richard Brown & David Studden (14-11), Nigel’s margin of victory also secured the bonus points for most shots in the Singles.  Cornwall failed to realise any more points from the match in the final session with both Triples and Fours losing to leave the final score reading Somerset 28 points 185 shots Cornwall 12 points 164 shots.

Premier Team Game Scores (16 Oct Away v Somerset)

Going into the return match at Fowey on Sunday (23 October) Team Manager Chris Cawrse made several changed to the formation of the team, primarily in the Triples and Fours where only 5 out of 16 games had been won to date this season.  The first session did not go well for Cornwall with a solitary win recorded by Nigel Nicholls, 13-5 in the Singles.  Peter Hore in the Singles and Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson in the Pairs were both went down by a single shot 13-14 and 14-15 respectively.  The second session was shared with both counties claiming two games apiece.  For Cornwall Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley were 11-5 winners in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Chris Roberts claimed an 8-6 win in the Fours.  At the halfway point the score read Cornwall 6 points 78 shots Somerset 10 points 92 shots.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs proved profitable for Cornwall securing 8 for the 12 points on offer to level the match score at 18-18.  Despite loses for both Singles, the closeness of the games ensured that the shots bonus points were secured.  The Pairs dominated their opponents with Richard Brown & David Studden winning 28-7 and Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson winning 18-9, the margins of victory again ensuring the bonus points were secure.  In the final session the game points were shared with wins for Cornwall recorded by Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 8-7 in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Chris Roberts 13-5 in the Fours, however Somerset claimed both sets of bonus points to secure the match win with a final score of Cornwall 18 points 181 shots Somerset 22 points 170 shots.  With Devon recording a 31-9 win against Dorset on Saturday the result was enough to see Cornwall move off the bottom of the table.
