INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall hosted Devon at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club in the second Inter County Championship match of the season.  

The Premier Team started with a solitary point in the first session, Nigel Nicholls drawing 14-14 in the Singles.  Peter Hore lost the other singles 9-21 and in the Pairs John Worton & Karen Watson lost 12-16 and David Balow & David Studden 11-12.

The second session saw two points come Cornwall's way with Dennis Shorthouse, Graham Reeves, Gary Davey & Neil Gribble winning 15-6 in the Fours.  Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly lost the other Fours 7-14.  Both Triples Ronnie Thomas, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse and Mike Dyer, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams lost 7-16.  Cornwall trailed 3-13 at the half way point in the match.

The third session the points were shared with both Pairs winning and taking the bonus points, Balow & Studden 17-10 and Worton & Watson 14-12.  In the Singles Nicholls lost 11-17 and Hore went down by a single shot 8-9.

In the final session the home team picked up four of the twelve points on offer.  In the Fours Jolly's rink won 14-8 and Gribble's lost 5-13 meaning the bonus points were shared.  In the Triples Williams took a 12-12 draw and Cawrse lost 11-12.

The final match score Cornwall 13 points 174 shots Devon 27 points 208 shots.  With Dorset recording a 27-13 win over Somerset they lead the way on 53 points from two matches, Devon are second with 27 points from one, Cornwall third also on 27 from two and Somerset fourth with 13 from one.

The A Team again started strongly with an advantage in the first session with wins for Chris Roberts 13-9 & Alan Holden 14-11 in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Bob Banks 20-5 in the Pairs. The other Pair of Keith Williams & Ray Jeffery lost 8-17.  A shared second session saw Lynne Davey, Derek Newton & Graham Ford win 10-9 in the Triples and Diane Shorthouse, Henry Kendall, Mike Webster & Keith Matthews win 13-4 in the Fours.  The second Triple of Tony Baldwin, John Dodd & Brenda Sleep lost 7-15 and the second Four of Meg Horrell, Sandra Worton,Tony Jago & Ken Horrell lose 9-11.  Cornwall led 10-6 at the halfway point of the match.

In the third session Cornwall took three wins, in the Singles Roberts won 13-11 though defeat for Holden by 6-20 saw the bonus points go Devon's way.  In the Pairs Temple-Smith and Banks won 17-11 and Williams & Jeffery claimed their first win of the season 17-9.  Cornwall comfortably took the bonus points.  Devon closed the gap in the final session taking eight of the twelve point on offer.  Cornwall sealed the overall match with a win in the fours for Horrell's rink 12-8 and despite Matthews' rink losing 4-12 the bonus points were secured.  Bothe Triples lost, Ford 11-16 and Sleep 16-18.

The final match score Cornwall 22 points 190 shots Devon 18 points 186 shots.  Cornwall lead the way with 51 points from two matches, Dorset have 31 from two, Somerset 20 from one and Devon 18 from one

Cornwall are next in action on Sunday 9th October when Somerset are the visitors to Carnmoggas.

MIXED FOURS

On Saturday 12 teams competed in the County Mixed Fours at Carnmoggas.  Played with four groups of three the group winners then progressed to Semi Finals.

Julie Edwards, Howard McCormack, Wendy Carne (Penlee) & David Balow (Marazion) won Group One with 4 points +12 shots.  Elise Daniell (Holmans), Caroline Moore (Luxulyan), Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) took Group Two with 4 +9.  Lynne Davey (Landrake), Martin Boraston (East Taphouse),, Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) & Gary Davey (Landrake) won Group Three with 2 +10 and Diane Shorthouse (Landrake), Alice Grimshaw (Treviscoe), Graham Reeves (Saltash) & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) progressed from Group Four 4 +12.

In the Semi Finals Davey defeated Shorthouse 7-6 and Hore won 17-3 against Balow.  Davey won the Final 8-7 against Hore. 

ESMBA OPEN FOURS

Cornwall's England Squad members will all take part in the ESMBA Open Fours on Saturday ahead of a squad practice day on Sunday.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

Back in the county the first round of Inter Area League matches will be played at Carnmoggas on Sunday with North facing Central and East against West.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort near Bere Regis to take on Dorset in the first round of matches the English Short Mat Bowling Association Inter County Championship.

The Premier Team started with a shared first session with both Pairs winning by a single shot, John Worton & Karen Watson 13-12 and David Balow & David Studden 12-11. In the Singles Peter Hore lost by 14-15 and Nigel Nicholls 9-14.

The second session also saw the points shared with both Triples winning. Ronnie Thomas, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse 16-9 and Mike Dyer, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams 12-11. In the Fours Dennis Shorthouse, Gary Davey, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble lost 5-10 and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly 6-14.

The third session again saw points shared with wins for Hore, 13-11 in the Singles, and Balow & Studden 14-9 in the Pairs. Nicholls lost 8-14 in the Singles and Worton & Watson lost 8-14 in the Pairs. Cornwall took the bonus points in the Pairs and Dorset the Singles to leave the match tied at 14-14 going into a deciding session that would see Cornwall fail to score a point. In the Triples Cawrse lost 6-21 and Williams lost 9-12, in the Fours Gribble lost 6-10 and Jolly lost 10-12.

The final match score Dorset 26 points 200 shots Cornwall 14 points 166 shots.

The A Team took an advantage in the first session with wins for Chris Roberts 13-9 & Alan Holden 17-12 in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Bob Banks 13-12 in the Pairs. The other Pair of Keith Williams & Ray Jeffery lost 10-16. Dorset clawed back in the second session restricting Cornwall to 3 points closing the gap to 2 points. A win in the Fours for Lynne Davey, Henry Kendall, Mike Webster & Keith Matthews 12-6 and a draw in the Triples for Graham Reeves, John Dodd & Brenda Sleep 11-11. The second Triple of Sheila Hodge, Graham Ford & Derek Newton lost 11-17 and the second Four of Meg Horrell, Tony Jago, Sandra Worton & Ken Horrell lost 4-12.

In the third session dominant wins in the Singles for Roberts 17-6 and Holden 16-7 saw Cornwall take a clean sweep of points in the discipline. Temple-Smith and Banks won 20-8 in the Pairs securing the bonus points to take Cornwall within two points of winning the match. Williams & Jeffery kept the margin of defect to 1 in there game, losing 10-11. Cornwall finished the match dropping only two of the twelve on offer in the final session. In the Triples Newton won 14-8 and Sleep drew 13-13 to leave the bonus points shared. In the Fours Horrell won 13-3 and Matthews 17-5.

The final match score Dorset 11 points 156 shots Cornwall 29 points 211 shots.

Cornwall have a quick return to action on Sunday when Devon are the visitors to Carnmoggas.

MIXED FOURS

On Saturday 12 teams will contest the County Mixed Fours title at Carnmoggas with play getting underway at 0900.

INTER COUNTY RINKS

Cornwall recently competed in the Inter County Rinks at the Dorset venue. With two teams from three qualifying for the finals later in the season. Cornwall narrowly missed on qualification losing 45-51 to Devon and 43-45 to Somerset.

ESMBA Open Pairs
On Saturday a number of local bowlers travelled to Tamworth to compete in the ESMBA Open Pairs.

Dennis & Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) were drawn in Group 5 of the Round Robin stages and unfortunately did not win a game, losing 6-9 to Kate Williams & Thomas Bright, 4-12 to eventual winners Ryan Knight & Vincent Dornan and 4-9 to James Scoins & Daniel Peach.

In Group 9 Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & David Studden (Holmans) started strongly with a 15-3 win against Dennis Hinks & Mark Mchugh and 13-4 win over Michael & Andrew Hall.  The final game in the group saw the pairing lose 4-12 to Ollie Hipkiss & Adam Smith which was enough to ensure progression to the knock out stages.

Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) teamed up with Gloucestershire's Steven Holdsworth in Group 10.  An opening 12-4 win over Rose Haynes & Lesley Fennell was followed by defeat to Jason Woods & Gary Best 4-10.  A 10-7 win over Brian Baker & Emily Thomas was enough to secure a place in the knockout stages.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) teamed up with Steven Packer (West Yorkshire) but did not win a game losing 5-13 to Gareth Davies & Nicky Bartlett, 4-12 to Dave Wiggins & Brandon Whittaker and 5-15 eventual runners up Jack Shephard & Nigel Reed.

Karen Watson (Saltash) paired up with Essex's Dom Reed in Group 12.  A 14-3 win in the first game against Ricky Pyle & Alun Thomas was followed in the second game with a closer 6-5 win against Peter Roberts & Liam Smith.  In the final game a solid 13-4 win over Dawn Church & Sue Smith secured top spot in the group.

Peter Hore (Holmans) reformed his World Championship winning pairing with Chris Willies (West Mids) in Group 13.  Qualified top of the group but the result details are unclear on the ESMBA website.

Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) lined up in Group 14.  A 10-7 win in the first game against Ryan Fox & John Jeffrey was followed with a 14-3 win over Ben Pay & James Bucknell.  A drawn final game, 8-8 against Dom & Anthony Rogers secured top spot in the group.

In the second round Nigel & Dave lost 4-9 to Malcolm Follis & Keith Smith.  Gillian & Steve lost 5-9 to Celia & Chris Jeans.  Karen & Dom won 14-5 against James Scoins & Daniel Peach.  Peter & Chris lost 6-11 to David Lamb & Jaime Foster and Tom & Luke lost 3-9 to Chris Terry & Glynn Roy.

In the third round Karen & Dom progressed to the Quarter Finals with a 14-7 win against Steve Stanton & David Millington-Jones.  There run in the competition came to an end in the Quarter Finals with a 5-7 loss to Ollie Hipkiss & Adam Smith

County Team Trials & Inter County
The Inter County Championship reverts back to groups of four this season with Dorset rejoining Cornwall, Devon & Somerset in a South West group.  A tight schedule of matches sees all six group games played before the end of November followed by a more than two month gap before the start of the knockout stages in February.

County Team Manager Nigel Nicholls and the respective Premier and A team captains have their first look at the squad on Saturday during the team trials at Carnmoggas.

On Sunday a team of 16 will travel to the Dorset Bowls Resort near Bere Regis for the ESMBA Inter County Rinks competition where Devon & Somerset will provide stiff opposition.

A further team practice is scheduled for Saturday 17 September at Carmoggas with the first group match away to Dorset at the Dorset Bowls Resort on the following day.
