NEWS RELEASE 31 March 2019

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Over the weekend The National Mixed Fours and Over 55 Pairs were played at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

On Saturday Elise Daniell, Gillian Cawrse, Callum Beale & Peter Hore competed in the Mixed Fours.  One win the the group stages was enough to take them through to the Knockout stages where in the Last 16 they defeated Somerset's Carol Hawkins, Sue Smith, Barry Keirle & Keith Hawkins 12-1.  More South West opposition followed in the Quarter Finals where Devon's Richard Williams, Benny Bass, Marie Tolman & Pam Tolman prevailed 7-3.

On Sunday Howard McCormack & Mark Payne won all three group games to qualify for the knockout stages where they met Hertfordshire's Geoff Branch & Sam Salmon losing 8-10 in the last 32 round.

The remainder of the National Championship titles will be contested from Thursday 11th - Sunday 14th April with Cornwall represented in all disciplines.

BEBBINGTON CUP
On Sunday the Bebbington Cup was contested at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club between the Four area league winners.  Newlyn Trinity Jowsters (West), Withiel Oaks (Central), Lanteglos A (North) & Landrake (East).

After the three rounds of games the title was decided on the last game to finished between Withiel Oaks and Newlyn Trinity Jowsters with the Oaks winning both mats 11-10 and 12-10.  The full results were:
Session One: Withiel Oaks v Landrake 1-18 & 19-6; Newlyn Trinity Jowsters v Lanteglos A 12-7 & 17-4
Session Two: Withiel Oaks v Lanteglos A 15-2 & 12-7; Landrake v Newlyn Trinity Jowsters 4-17 & 6-17
Session Three: Withiel Oaks v Newlyn Trinity Jowsters 11-10 & 12-10; Landrake v Lanteglos A 10-8 & 5-11

Final standings 1st Withiel Oaks 10 points +17 shots,  2nd Newlyn Trinity Jowsters 8 +39, 3rd Landrake 4 -24, 4th Lanteglos A 2 -32.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
Following the conclusion of the Bebbington Cup on Sunday 9 bowlers competed in the County Champion of Champions at Carnmoggas.

Played to a straight knockout format Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Gary Skinner (Saltash) 12-6 in the Preliminary Round.  The Quarter Finals saw Paul Murphy (Porthleven) defeat Tripp 12-8.  Peter Hore (Holmans) defeated Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) 10-5.  Caroline Moore (Luxulyan) won 11-9 against Callum Beale (Withiel) and Bob Banks (Boscastle) won 11-10 against David Shaw (Wadebridge).

In the Semi finals Hore defeated Murphy 15-0 and Banks won 11-7 against Moore.  The final was decided by an extra end with Hor defeating Banks 11-10.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
This weekend three local bowlers, Elise Daniell (Holmans), Peter Hore (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) will compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Open Pairs and World Masters Singles in Belfast.

On Friday the Pairs will see Elise and Peter team up whilst Nigel pairs with Cheshire based Stephen Proctor.  Over the remainder of the weekend they will be playing for individual honours in a field of 288 bowlers.  

The SMPT World Rankings are based on a rolling 12 event basis.  Nigel goes into the Singles event in a net second place in the Rankings on 787.63 points, 17.5 behind leader Jonathan Payne (BEL).  James Trott (ENG) is third on 767.13, Ed Sawbridge (ENG) is fourth on 760 and Stephen Gale (IOM) fifth on 756.75.  Peter has 407.75 points and Elise 316.63 points.

In the season Order of Merit table Nigel sits in eighth place with 449 points, 92 behind leader Ed Sawbridge.  Peter is 26th with 295.50 points and Elise is 43rd with 236.25 points.

Last weekend the County Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours titles were contested at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.  

On Saturday the Singles was played during the morning with Callum Beale (Withiel) taking the title defeating Peter Hore (Holmans) 11-9 in the final.  The full results were

COUNTY FINALS
This coming weekend the County Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours finals will be played at Carnmoggas.  On Saturday the Singles will be played first starting at 0900 with the Fours following at 1200.  On Sunday the Pairs will be played at 0900 with the Triples featuring from 1200.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR EUROPEAN OPEN PAIRS
Over the weekend a small group of local bowlers travelled to Herentals in Belgium for the Short Mat Players Tour European Open Pairs.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) were drawn in Group B and topped the group with 16 out of a possible 18 points.  Elise Daniell (Holmans) teamed up with Dorset's Alex Kley in Group H where they finished second with 15 out of a possible 21 points.  Both pairings progressed to the Cup Knockout competition.  

In the first round of the knockout stages Peter and Nigel met Rebecca Smith & Dennis Hinks (ENG) winning 16-4.  Elise and Alex met John Duffy and Ake Almli (SWE) winning 9-4.  The second round saw Peter and Nigel against Gunnar and Ferdinand Frantzen (NOR) winning 8-5.  Elise and Alex met Olle Backgren and Karl Nordlund (SWE) winning 12-4.  The two pairings met in the Quarter Finals with Peter and Nigel winning 8-5.  The match was broadcast on Facebook and can be viewed here https://www.facebook.com/ShortMatPlayersTour/videos/2403786252964719/.  Peter and Nigel's run in the competition came to an end in the Semi Finals with a 10-5 defeat against eventual winners Nathan Haire and Terry Crawford (NIR).

INTER AREA MATCH
On Sunday 128 bowlers competed in the Inter Area Match at Carnmoggas with 4 teams of 32 representing each area.  A competitive days bowling saw Central take the title by 2 points from West.  The full result being

Central 30 points 196 shots for 187 shots against.
West 28 points 227 shots for 157 shots against.
North 21 points 176 shots for 199 against.
East 17 points 165 shots for 221 shots against.

COUNTY LEAGUES
The league season is coming to and end and the qualifiers for the Bebbington Cup are confirmed.  Representing each area will be West - Newlyn Trinity, Central - Withiel Oaks, East - Landrake and North - Lanteglos A.

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 3 March 2019

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The Cornwall Short Mat Bowls county squad players have again showed their commitment to the county team with a 500 mile round trip for the second consecutive weekend.  The Premier Team's run in the ESMBA Inter County Championship however came to an end in Sunday's Semi Finals with an 18-22 defeat to Norfolk at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

Cornwall won three of the four games in the first session with Nigel Nicholls and James Smith winning 13-7 and 21-10 respectively in the Singles.  Elise Daniell and Peter Hore won 15-8 in the Pairs.  The second session saw the points split 4 points apiece.  In the Triples John Worton, Sandra Worton and Chris Roberts won 16-11 and in the Fours Rose Dyer, Nathan Waters, Gillian Cawrse and Luke Jolly won 9-4.  Cornwall led by 10 points to 6 at the halfway point.

The third session saw Cornwall take 4 out of a possible 12 points with Nicholls winning 15-11 in the Singles and Cornwall taking the Singles bonus points to leave the match tied 14 apiece going into the last session.  Cornwall again only won one game in the final session, Jolly's four winning 15-11 and the fours took the bonus points.  Norfolk took the remaining three games and took the Triples bonus points to win the match 22 points to 8 and 205 shots to 176.  Norfolk will face West Midlands in the final on 17th March after they defeated Dorset 31 points to 9.

Cornwall have enjoyed a good run in the competition in the last three years, reaching the final in 2017 and semi finals in 2018 and 2019.  The 2019-20 season will see just 17 teams competing in the Premier section, with all based in the Midlands and south thereof.

COUNTY FINALS
On Saturday a number of the bowlers who featured in Sunday's Inter County defeat were chasing individual honours in the first of the County Finals at Carnmoggas.

First up was the Two Wood Singles where in the Quarter Finals David Topliffe (Boscastle) defeated Des Pengelly (Landrake) 15-8.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) won 12-8 against Antony Smith (Luxulyan).  Alan Holden (Landrake) won 10-7 against Bob Banks (Boscastle) and Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Callum Beale (Blisland) 10-7.

In the Semi Finals Reeves defeated Topliffe 10-5 and Holden defeated Thomas 13-6.  Holden won the final 11-8.

Saturday afternoon saw the Four Wood Pairs title decided.  In the Quarter Finals Richard Kerr and Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) defeated Kevin Williams and Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) 11-5.  Max Burden and Keith Matthews (Blisland) won 10-2 against Caroline and Alan Trubshaw (Duloe).  Peter Skinner and Graham Reeves (Saltash) defeated Heidi Kerr and Gary Davey (Landrake) 9-7.  Sandra and John Worton (St Newlyn East) eased past first time county finalists Leonard Lee and John Read (Duloe) 18-1.  

The Semi Finals saw Kerr and Shorthouse defeat Burden and Matthews 9-5 and the Wortons win 9-3 against Skinner & Reeves.  The final went to and extra end where the Wortons picked up a score of 3 to defeat Kerr and Shorthouse 9-6.

INTER AREA MATCH
This Sunday see's 128 bowlers converge on Carnmoggas for the annual Inter Area Match where each area puts up a team of eight rinks who play each other during the day.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR EUROPEAN OPEN PAIRS
This weekend a small group of local bowlers travel to Herentals in Belgium for the Short Mat Players Tour European Open Pairs.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) are drawn in Group B and Elise Daniell (Holmans) has teamed up with Dorset's Alex Kley in Group H.

The group stages will see eight teams in each group guaranteeing each pairing at least seven games in the tournament.  The top four from each group will go into the Cup Knockout and remaining pairings will play a Plate competition.

Full results will be available on the Short Mat Players Tour website throughout the two days.
