CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Over the weekend Elise Daniell from the Holmans club became the first bowler from the county to earn a place in an England team at the World Short Mat Bowls Championships.

The tournament ran from Friday through to Sunday at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff.  Playing in the Triples Elise teamed up with Gareth Davies (Oxfordshire) and Keith Hawkins (Somerset).

On Friday they faced Norway first winning 14-5.  The winning streak continued in the second game with a 16-11 win against Scotland.  The day ended with another comprehensive win win against Germany 15-4.  

Saturday would throw up tougher challenges with the day starting with a 17-10 loss to Belgium after a slow start for the England trio.  The second game of the day resulted in a narrow 9-10 defeat to Wales.  The final game of the day saw the team rally to record a fine 15-12 win over the previously unbeaten Irish and keep alive a chance of reaching the semi finals with one group game to go on Sunday morning.  Sunday morning's game against Sweden resulted in another narrow defeat 8-9 ending the trio's championship run.  Ireland and Wales progressed from the group to the Semi Finals.

INTER AREA MATCH

Locally on Sunday the annual Inter Area Match was played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club with 128 bowlers competing.

After the six sessions of play West and North finished on 28 points apiece with the West taking the honours on shot difference +24 to North's +22.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

This weekend the National Championships take place at a new venue of Church Gresley Indoor Bowling Club, Swadlincote, Derbyshire.  Cornwall have two representatives in each discipline for the first time in many years this year.

The competition gets underway on Thursday with the Singles with Peter Hore (Holmans) and Alan Holden (Landrake) representing Cornwall.  On Friday Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore and John Worton & Chris Roberts (Ladock) will be in action in the Pairs. 

On Saturday  Elise Daniell (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan), Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore will be trying to go one better than last years Runner up spot in the Fours and will be joined by Dennis Shorthouse, Alan Holden, Gary Davey & Neil Gribble (Landrake).  Sunday's Triples will see Worton & Roberts joined by Richard Brown (Ladock) and Truscott, Nicholls & Hore take to the mats.

COUNTY FINALS

Over the weekend the finals of the main county championships were contested at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

On Saturday morning the Singles was the first title to be decided.  In the Quarter Finals Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Keith Matthews (Blisland) 14-6.  John Worton (Ladock) was an 11-5 winner against Graham Ford (St Newlyn East).  David Studden (Illogan) defeated Peter Hore (Holmans) 11-6.  Dennis Shorthouse progressed with a bye. 

In the Semi Finals Nigel Nicholls defeated John Worton 9-4 and Dennis Shorthouse was a 13-3 winner against David Studden.  In the Final Nigel defeated Dennis 14-5.

Saturday afternoon saw the Fours decided.  In the Quarter Finals an all Dobwalls match saw Robert Rawlings, Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden defeat Graham Sleep, David Griffin, Martin Boraston & Derek Newton 17-1.  Robert James, Margaret Jenkin, Ray Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) were 11-6 winners against Elise Daniell, Derek Elliott, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans).  Kath Goodman, Tony Jago, Luke Jolly & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) were comfortable 21-3 winners against Joan Boddy, Meg Horrell & Ken Horrell (Withiel).  Clarence Stapleton, Jim Watson, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) edged a tight game against Dennis Shorthouse, Heidi Kerr, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble (Landrake).

In the Semi Finals Nigel Nicholls defeated Max Burden 9-7 and Karen Watson needed an extra end to defeat Graham Ford 12-8.  In the final a score of four on the six end proved decisive for Karen Watson in an otherwise tight game going on to win 8-6 against Nigel Nicholls.

On Sunday morning attention turned to the Pairs.  In the Quarter Finals Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls) defeated Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) 9-8.  Dennis Shorthouse & Gary Davey (Landrake) were 14-10 winners against David Foulds & Don Falck (Marazion).  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) were comfortable 16-4 winners against Roy Sumner & David Balow (Marazion).  Kath Goodman & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) defeated Martin Boraston & Derek Newton (Dobwalls) 13-6.  

Both Semi Finals required an extra end with Brenda Sleep & Max Burden defeating Dennis Shorthouse & Gary Davey 11-10 and Kath Goodman & Karen Watson winning 9-7 against Elise Daniell and Peter Hore.  The final also went to an extra end with Brenda Sleep & Max Burden taking the title with a 10-9 win against Kath Goodman & Karen Watson.

The final title to be decided was the Triples on Sunday afternoon.  In the Quarter Finals Joe Coups, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) defeated Paul Spencer, Ruth Newbury & Derek Swaby (Wadebridge) 14-3.  Janet Carter, Brian Crank & David Topliffe (St Minver) won 9-8 against Dennis Shorthouse, Gillian Cawrse & Neil Gribble (Landrake).  Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls) were comfortable 12-4 winners against Diane Williams, Martin Williams & Mark Payne (Penlee).  Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) defeated Sam Groves, Gordon & Jenny Smith (Treviscoe) 11-4.

In the Semi Finals, a score of five on the penultimate end saw Gerald Fisher take the lead for the first time in the game to win 13-8 against David Topliffe.  Peter Hore established an early lead against Max Burden going on to win 9-7.  The Final between Peter Hore and Gerald Fisher only a couple of shots separate the teams and them level going into the last end in which Fisher made two shots with his final bowl to win 9-7.

On Saturday Elise Daniell, Gillian Cawrse, Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore travel to Northampton for the National Mixed Fours competition.  On Sunday the Bebbington Cup competition will be contested by the four area league winners, Newlyn Trinity Jowsters, Lostwithiel, Tintagel and Landrake at Carnmoggas,

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall's Premier Team travelled to Northampton to face Northamptonshire in the Final of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation competition.

The first session saw points shared with Cornwall win both Pairs, John Worton & Nicholas Truscott 16-10 and Elise Daniell & Mark Eddy 19-9.  The second session was also shared with Cornwall winning both Triples, Dennis Shorthouse, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse 17-10 and Richard Brown, Ken Horrell & Neil Gribble 14-9.  At the halfway point in the match the scores were level at 8 points each.  

The afternoon session did not prove as fruitful for Cornwall winning just two games, Nigel Nicholls 15-12 in the Singles and Brenda Sleep, Gary Davey, Chris Roberts & Percy Tripp 11-5 in the Fours.  Cornwall's six hour journey to the venue obviously telling against a team playing in their home county.  Cornwall held onto the bonus points earned from the morning session in Pairs and Triples to leave the final match score Cornwall 16 points 182 shots Northamptonshire 185 shots.  For Cornwall, to reach the final was a mark of the progress made through the season which started with a 6-34 defeat away to Devon.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES FINALS

On Saturday the finals of the County Two Wood Singles were played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

In the Quarter Finals Peter Hore (Holmans) defeated Henry Kendall (Holmans) 12-7.  Martin Boraston (Dobwalls) won 12-8 against John Worton (Ladock).  Gerald Fisher (Illogan) was a 12-9 winner against David Balow (Marazion) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Jim Stanley (Marazion) 14-6.
In the Semi Finals Peter Hore won 13-9 against Martin Boraston and Gerald Fisher defeated Nigel Nicholls 12-3.  Peter Hore won the final defeating Gerald Fisher 12-7 with two ends to spare in the final.

COUNTY FOUR WOOD PAIRS FINALS

On Saturday afternoon attention turned to the County Four Wood Pairs finals.

In the Quarter Finals Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) defeated Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) 11-6.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) outplayed Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr (Landrake) 23-1.  Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) were 11-7 winners against Edward Wakeley & Tony Jago (Treviscoe).  In the final game Derek Elliott & Mark Eddy (Holmans) only won three of the nine ends in defeating Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) 12-8 including an 8 shot maximum on the fourth end.

In the semi-finals Fisher & Martin came from 1-9 down to defeat Daniell & Hore 12-10 and Elliott and Eddy were never in trouble as the defeated  Luke and Wakeley 13-3.  In the final Fisher and Martin came from 1-5 down to win 10-6.

COUNTY LEAGUES

The four area league titles have been decided with all four areas going down to the last week.  The teams going forward to Bebbington Cub are Newlyn Trinity (West), Lostwithiel (West), Landrake (East) and Tintagel (North).

COUNTY FINALS

This weekend sees more finals action with the County Finals being played over two days at Carnmoggas with play starting at 9.00 on both days.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's Premier Team are through to the final of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition after defeating East Sussex 22 points to 18 in a well contested match in Northampton on Saturday.

In the first session the points were shared in the Singles Nigel Nicholls won 18-12 and  in the Pairs John Worton & Nicholas Truscott won 12-8.  The second session proved crucial for Cornwall with three wins. Dennis Shorthouse, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse in the Triples, Henry Kendall, Brenda Sleep, Gary Davey & Chris Roberts 7-5 and Graham Ford, Joe Dixon, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore 9-4 in the Fours taking Cornwall into a 10-6 lead in the match.

The third session saw Cornwall win both singles, Nigel Nicholls 13-11 and David Studden 16-9 but missing out on the bonus points by 1 shot. Both Pairs lost meaning that those bonus points were also missed to leave the match score reading 14 points each but Cornwall having a 7 mats to 5 advantage.

Needing a minimum of 6 points from the final session Cornwall Gillian Cawrse's Triple completed a double on the day with a 16-4 win which also secured bonus points from the Triples to move Cornwall to within 2 points of victory.  Chris Robert's secured an 11-8 win for his Four with the last bowl of his game and with Cornwall also gaining the bonus points the final match score read Cornwall 22 points 167 shots East Sussex 18 points 164 shots.  The match scorecard can be found at http://bit.ly/1fyhO9p.

Cornwall will return to Northampton next Sunday to face Northamptonshire in the Final with a largely unchanged team expected to make the long trip.

COUNTY FINALS

On Saturday the finals of the County Two Wood Singles and Four Wood Pairs will be played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

First up will be the Two Wood Singles with Henry Kendall (Withiel), David Balow (Marazion), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Gerald Fisher (Illogan), Peter Hore (Holmans), Martin Boraston (Dobwalls), Jim Stanley (Treviscoe) and John Worton (Ladock) will competing for the title.

Upon conclusion of the Singles the Four Wood Pairs will be contested by Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan), Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel), Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans), Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr (Landrake), Derek Elliott & Mark Eddy (Holmans), Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) and Edward Wakeley & Tony Jago (Treviscoe)
