CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 28 October 2018

NORWEGIAN OPEN
Over the past weekend Nigel Nicholls, Peter Hore & Elise Daniell traveled to Norway to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open tournament.

Nigel came through Group 11 in second place with three wins, a draw and a loss to qualify from the Cup competition.  The the first round Nigel faced Glenn Harvey (NIR) losing 8-13.  Elise took three wins in Group 14 to take second place and a place in the Cup competition.  The first round saw Elise lose to Mio Kontic (ENG) losing 7-15.  Peter took two wins in Group 21 to finish third in group and take a place in the Plate competition.  After a bye in the first round Peter faced Stephen Proctor (ENG) losing 2-14.  

COUNTY TRIPLES
On Saturday 30 teams will compete in the County Triples at Carnmoggas chasing the 8 places in the County Finals.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall face Somerset at Carnmoggas for the fourth Inter County match for the group stages. Cornwall's Premier Team trail Somerset by 4 points in pursuit of second place in the table and a place in the ICC knockout stages, Dorset lead a further 31 points ahead.  The A Team also currently sit in third place, 8 points behind second place Dorset and 17 behind leaders Somerset.

COUNTY TWO WOOD PAIRS
On Sunday 27 pairs competed at Carnmoggas for the eight places in the FInals for the County Two Wood Pairs.  The pairings were organised into six groups with the group winners and two best runners up qualifying.

Group One winners were Martin Boraston (Duloe) & Gary Davey (Landrake) with 6 points +24.  Group Two saw Bob Banks & David Topliffe (Boscastle) finish top on 6 +17 and Sheila Yelland & Bert Morrisey (Goonbarrow) took the second runner up spot with 4 +7.  Richard Kerr & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) topped Group Three with the day's highest score of 6 +31.

Group Four winners were Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 6 +16.  Group Five saw Nathan Waters & Luke Jolly (Withiel) finish top on 4 +22 with Ray Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) second on 4 +10 for the highest runner up spot.  Steve Smith & Roger Hailey (St Newlyn East) top the last finals spot topping Group Six with 4 +6.

NORWEGIAN OPEN
This weekend Nigel Nicholls, Peter Hore & Elise Daniell are in the 126 strong entry for the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open at Skien Fritidspark, Skien in southern Norway.  The SMPT will have regular score updates on their website over the two days together with live streams of some games.  Keep an eye on the CCSMBA Social Media for details.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort at Bere Regis to take on Dorset in the third round of ESMBA Inter County Championship group matches.

In the Premier fixture Cornwall endured a disappointing day against a Dorset team that are averaging 29 out of a possible 40 points a match so far this season.

Cornwall won just 4 of the 16 games throughout the day with the final score Dorset 32 points 214 shots Cornwall 8 points 146 shots.  Cornwall's points scored by a James Smith in the Singles winning both his games 14-10 and 14-8.  Ray Jeffery, Percy Tripp & Kevin Williams won their morning Triples 13-8 and Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Neil Gribble & Callum Beale won their afternoon Fours 8-6.  Dorset took all the bonus points from the match.  

In the day's other match in Cornwall's group Devon bounced back from their disappointing opening results to win 22-18 away to Somerset.  Dorset are now 31 points clear on 87 points with Somerset second on 56, Cornwall third on 52 and Devon fourth on 45.

The A Team fixture saw Cornwall take 3 points from the first session.  Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) won 18-8 in Singles and Worton & David Topliffe drew 11-11 in the Pairs.  The second session saw Cornwall take another 3 points with Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Sleep drawing 11-11 in the Triples and Heidi Kerr, Nathan Waters, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell winning 11-8.  Cornwall trailed 6-10 at the lunch break.

Cornwall failed to claim a game point in the afternoon Singles and Pairs but did hold onto the Singles bonus points to move the score to 8-18 in Dorset's favour.  The final session saw Cornwall win on three mats.  In the Triples Lynn Smith, Mike Webster & Keith Williams and Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Sleep won 21-7 & 10-7 respectively.  Heidi Kerr, Nathan Waters, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell won 12-10.  The bonus points were shared with Cornwall taking the Triples and Dorset the Fours for a final match score of Dorset 24 points 181 shots Cornwall 16 points 176 shots.

Somerset drew the other match in the group with Devon 20-20 to continue to lead the table on 76 points, Dorset move into second with 67 points, Cornwall are now third on 59 points and Devon fourth on 38.

The Inter County Championship takes a three week break with Cornwall next in action on Sunday 4th November when they host Somerset at Carnmoggas.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday 33 bowlers competed over two session for one of eight places in the Finals of the County Two Wood Singles.

From the morning session David Topliffe (Boscastle) qualified from Group One with 6 pts + 26 shots, Graham Reeves (Saltash) topped Group Two with 6 +22.  Alan Holden (Landrake) came through Group Three with 6 +19 and Callum Beale (Withiel) topped Group Four with 4 +9.  The afternoon session saw Des Pengelly (Landrake) top Group One with 6 +7.  Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) topped Group Two with 5 +20, Tony Smith (Luxulyan) came through Group Three on 4 +15 and Bob Banks (Boscastle) took the final spot with 4 +6 in Group Four.

The finalists will compete for the county title back at Carnmoggas on Sat 9th March.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall faced Devon at Carnmoggas in the second round of ESMBA Inter County Championship group matches.

In the Premier fixture Cornwall won three of the four games in the first session.  In the Singles Callum Beale 18-7, in the Pairs Elise Daniell & David Studden 15-10 and John Worton & Chris Roberts 12-11.  Cornwall took a further three wins in the second session to move into a 12-4 lead at the lunch break.  The points scored by Mike Dyer, Kevin Williams & Nigel Nicholls 15-13 and Betty Temple-Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthews 12-11 in the Triples and Graham Reeves, Martin Boraston, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore 11-7 in the Fours.

The third session was shared with Cornwall taking both Pairs, Daniel & Studden 21-3 and Worton & Roberts 13-11 comfortably taking the bonus points.  With both Singles losing Devon took the bonus points leaving Cornwall 18-10 in front with a session to play.  The final session was also shared with Temple-Smith, Burden & Matthews winning 14-5 in the Triples and Reeves, Boraston, Jolly & Hore winning 23-2 in the Fours.  Cornwall took the bonus points in both disciplines for a final match score of Cornwall 26 points 206 shots Devon 14 points 183 shots.

Dorset won 24-16 away to Somerset to lead the table with 55 points, Cornwall second on 44, Somerset third on 38 and Devon fourth on 23.

The A Team fixture saw Cornwall take 5 points from the first session.  Mark Payne (Penlee) drew 14-14 in Singles and both Pairs won, Sandra Worton & David Topliffe 16-8 and Alan Holden & Des Pengelly 15-11.  The second session saw points shared with Cornwall winning a game in both Triples and Fours.  Lynn Smith, Mike Webster & Neil Gribble 12-8 and Rose Dyer, Beryl Langsworthy, Lynn Davey & Gary Davey 11-6.  Cornwall lead 9-7 at the lunch break.

A dominant third session saw Cornwall take all 8 game points and 4 bonus points on offer.  In the Singles Payne won 14-12 and Ronnie Thomas 24-8.  In the Pairs Worton & Topliffe won 15-7 and Holden & Pengelly 15-9.

The final session saw points shared with Cornwall again winning a game in both Triples and Fours.  Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Sleep 20-7 and Meg Horrell, Heidi Kerr, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell 12-4.  The bonus points were shared with Cornwall taking the Triples and Devon the Fours for a final match score of Cornwall 27 points 205 shots Devon 13 points 169 shots.

Somerset recorded a big win at home to Dorset, 32-8, to lead the table with  on 56 points, Cornwall and Dorset on 43 points and Devon fourth on 18.

Cornwall are back in action this Sunday with a trip to Bere Regis to take on Dorset.

COUNTY MIXED FOURS
On Saturday 11 teams competed in a combined County Championship and National Championship qualifier at Carnmoggas.

For the National Championship Qualifier the three teams entered were drawn together in Group One where Elise Daniell (Holmans), Karen Watson (Saltash), Callum Beale (Withiel) & Peter Hore (Holmans) topping the group with 6 points +18 shots.  2nd were Alan Holden, Des Pengelly (Landrake), Yolanda Featherstone & Dot Nunn (Saltash Kernow) on 4 -8.  Group Two was topped by Beryl Langsworthy (Penlee), Rose Dyer, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams (Newlyn Trinity) on 4 +10 with Dianne Shorthouse, Dennis Shorthouse, John Worton & Sandra Worton second on 2 +5.  Group Three was topped by Diane Williams, David Langsworthy, Gillian Waters & Martin Williams (Penlee) on 3 +12 with Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls), Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) on 3 +7.

In the semi-finals Hore defeated Kevin Williams 10-5 and Martin Williams defeated Holden 10-3  Williams won the final 8-6 against Hore who was forced to play the later stages of the County Championship with just three players.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday 37 bowlers are entered into the County Two Wood Singles with 19 playing in the morning and 18 in the afternoon at Carnmoggas.
