COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS

The finals of five county championships were contested over the weekend at The Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

First up was the County Fours where the Luxulyan four of Chris, Camilla & Gillian Cawrse and Phil Hicks won back the title they won 2 years ago with a closely contested victory over Treviscoe's R & G Ford and G & J Smith. Luxulyan eventually won the game 18-14 having raced ahead in the early stages before being pegged back. Both teams had eased through their semi finals earlier in the day against rinks from Holmans and Liskeard.

Next came the finals of the County Singles Championship where Phil Thomas of Dobwalls won the competition for the second time, beating Malcolm Furneaux of Penlee 16-10 in a closely fought final. Earlier in the day Thomas eased past R Flower (Tintagel) before beating Cornwall Premier Team Singles player Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn) by a single shot on a tense last end.

The County Mixed Fours saw Peter and Pam Hamley (Lostwithiel) join the new County Fours champions Chris and Camilla Cawrse to help the Luxulyan duo claim their second title of the day. As with the County Fours, the Luxulyan and Lostwithiel mixed team won back the title they had won 2 seasons ago, this time beating Roy Christophers (Helston), Anne Warren, Una Prideaux & David Studden (All Troon)13-8 in the final.

On Sunday it was the turn of the County Pairs and Triples finals. Troon's Joe Coups and David Studden took the County Pairs title to add to their County Four Wood Pairs title they had won 2 weeks before. They beat Helston's Roy Christophers and Percy Tripp 17-5 in a one sided final. Earlier Coups & Studden had beaten Betty Temple-Smith & Sheila Hodge 9-4 in the semi final having eased past J & S Ashton in the quarters.

J Coups & D Studden were then joined by Troon club-mate B Williams as another one sided final saw them claim a 21-6 win over B Sharp, J Roper & B Sleep of Dobwalls to claim the County Triples title. Earlier in the competition the Troon trio had beaten P Williams, C Matthews & J Watson (St Newlyn East) by just one shot in the semi final.

Inter County Championship

Cornwall's Premier Team travelled to Melksham, Wiltshire for the
Quarter Final of the Inter County Championship Consolation
Competition
on Sunday where they faced the team that knocked them out of the
competition last season, Shropshire.

The first session saw just 1 win from the 4 games, coming from the
rink of Margaret Jenkins, Pam Williams, Derek Swaby & Graham Ford.
Shropshire also took a healthy shots advantage, mainly thanks to an
almost faultless display from their World Singles Champion Chris
Grocott winning 29-4.

A sole win for Cornwall in the second session from Holmans duo Nick
Truscott and Peter Hore meant that at the half way stage Shropshire
lead by 12 points to 4. The third session saw Shropshire take all 4
wins to secure their place in the semi finals with a session to
spare.

With the match already lost, Cornwall hit back in the final session
with wins for Penlee's Geoff Lane and Mike Jefferies in the pairs and
Roy Christophers, Brenda Sleep & Carol Ford in the Triples along with
a
draw in the other pairs match.

Final Score - Cornwall 9 points 153 shots - Shropshire 27 points 217
