CCSMBA NEWS RELEASE - 17 February 2013

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE - 17 February 2013

There was no competition action locally over the weekend with the national calendar dedicated to Inter County and England matches.

Cornwall's England Squad members, Peter Hore (Holmans), Elise Daniell (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) made the long trip to North Yorkshire to play against a Northern Select team as part of the squads preparation for the forthcoming British 'A' Team  Championship in Dumfries over the weekend of 16th and 17th March.  On Saturday the England team were 52-12 overall with all three Cornwall players winning all games played during the day.  On Sunday  the England team won by 51-13 overall with Nigel winning 2 out of 2, Elise 2 out of 3 and Peter 1 out of 2 games playing in various teams and playing positions throughout the day.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's County Teams return to competitive action this weekend when they travel to Melksham on Saturday for the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  The Premier Team face Worcestershire in the Consolation competition and the A Team face Surrey in the Main Competition.  Team selections were not known at the time of writing.

COUNTY LEAGUES

The county league program is approaching the business end of the season with a lot still to play for across the county.

The West Area looks set for a three way battle between Newlyn Trinity Jowsters, Helston Grylls and Premier Division newcomers Illogan who reached the top division after back to back promotions after joining the league in the 2010/11 season.  Helston Penrose look set for an immediate return to the Premier Division as they head Division One by a clear margin.

Central Area leaders Treviscoe Whites saw their advantage reduced after dropping all six points at Withiel Elms last week.  Ladock Chiefs trail by 2 points with Ladock Braves a further 6 points behind.  With several games remaining between the top six teams no team can be discounted as still having a chance of securing the title.

In the East Area, with two weeks of fixtures remaining, this Thursdays match at Dobwalls between the home team who lie in second place with 49 points and leaders Callington Eagles on 50 points carries increased significance with the winners putting one hand on the title.  A draw would leave Landrake and Saltash Blues who are 4 points behind with an outside chance of overhauling the two above them.  Liskeard are assured of a swift return to the Premier Division with an 18 point lead at the top of Division One.

Lanteglos A are confirmed as North Area champions for a second successive season having dropped just 4 points all season.  Blisland are confirmed as Division Two winners and promoted to the top flight next season.

Up dated league tables are attached or can be found at http://www.nicholastruscott.co.uk/2008site/index.php?pg=leagueindex.

CCSMBA NEWS RELEASE - 10 February 2013

COUNTY FINALS

Over the weekend the finals of the County Championships were played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls club.

First up on Saturday morning was the County Singles.  In the Quarter Finals Chris Roberts (Ladock) opened up an early lead against Keith Matthews (Blisland) which he maintained throughout the game winning 9-8.  Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) was always in control against John Worton (Ladock) winning 14-5.  Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) opened up a 12-5 lead against Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) going on to win 14-11.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) opened quickly moved into 7-1  lead against David Topliffe (St Minver).  David responded to within one shot before Graham again moved in front winning 11-8.

The Semi Finals saw Nigel Nicholls comfortably defeat Chris Roberts 18-4 and Luke Jolly similarly beating Graham Reeves 12-4.  The Final saw Nigel move into an early lead with Luke rallying to within a shot after 4 ends.  Four successive scoring ends for Nigel left him 8 ahead with 3 ends to play. An eventful ninth end saw both bowlers put the jack of the mat before Luke scored 1 leaving Nigel with a unassailable lead eventually winning 11-5.

Saturday afternoon saw the County Fours title decided.  In the Quarter Finals Margaret Jenkin (Newlyn Trinity), Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), Percy Tripp (Helston) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) started well against Graham Luke, Pasty Wakeley, Chris Roberts and Brian Wakeley (Ladock) opening up a lead before the Ladock team responded moving to a 5-3 lead after 5 ends.  Successive scores of 5, 4 and 3 over the next 3 ends saw Nigel establish an unbeatable 15-5 lead with an end to spare.  Meg Horrell, Henry Matthews, Joan Boddy & Ken Horrell (Withiel) started well against Edward Wakeley, Sandra Worton, John Worton & Arthur Tubb (Ladock) establishing a 5-0 lead after 3 ends. Ladock responded levelling the score at 6-6 going into a last end which would be decided on the last wood of the game with Ken Horrell snatching the win 7-6.  Two runs of three successive scoring ends saw Melba Kitt, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner (Saltash) defeat Lynne Davey (Liskeard), Sheila Hodge (Liskeard), Martin Boraston (Dobwalls) & Gary Davey (Liskeard) 11-7.  The final game of the round saw Elise Daniell (Holmans), Derek Elliott (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) & Peter Hore (Holmans) start well with a 4 on the opening end against Mike Richards, Tom Lapworth, Martin Williams & Keith Williams (Penlee).  Penlee levelled the score after 3 ends before three successive ends for Hore opened up a 11-4 lead after 6 ends. Penlee scored a single on the seventh end before a 4 on the 8th end for Hore put the game out of Penlee's reach 15-5.

In the semi finals Nicholls and Horrell were all square at 3-3 after 4 ends before 4 successive scoring ends for Nicholls established an almost unassailable lead.  Horrell scored a consolation shot on the final end to leave the final score 10-4 to Nicholls. In the other game a score of 6 on the first end for Hore allowed his team to control the game defeating Woolner 14-4 with an end to spare.

Expectations of a close final were soon dispelled as Hore moved into a 8-1 lead after 4 ends. Single scores for Nicholls on the next two ends did little to ease the pressure and scores of 3 and 4 on the seventh and eighth ends took Hore into an unassailable 15-3 lead to claim the title.

On Sunday morning the County Pairs was contested.  In the Quarter Finals Martin Boraston (Dobwalls) and Gary Davey (Liskeard) opened up a 7-0 lead in the opening 4 ends against Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) and went on to win 13-5 with an end to spare.  Richard Brown & David Studden (Illogan) moved into a 4-1 lead in the opening ends against Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls).  After 6 ends the scores were level 5-5, over the closing ends of the game Brown & Studden edged in front to win 10-7.  Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) quickly opened up a lead against Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) going on to win 15-6.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) were never headed in defeating Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) & Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) 10-3.

In the Semi Finals Brown & Studden dominated against Boraston & Davey winning 16-2.  Jenkin & Nicholls defeated Daniell & Hore 11-8 after a tense match which for much of the game only saw two shots separating the two pairs.  In the Final a score of 3 on the first end for Brown & Studden saw them lead though the first 6 ends.  Jenkin & Nicholls levelled the score at 6-6 after 7 ends before Brown & Studden won 3 of the last 4 ends to claim the title 10-7.

Sunday afternoon saw the final title of the weekend decided, the Triples.  Elise Daniell (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) & Peter Hore (Holmans) quickly moved into a 10-1 lead against Richard Brown, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) with scores of 4 and 5 on the third and fourth ends going on to win 15-6 with an end to spare.  Marilyn Stewart, Arthur Hambly (Withiel) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) received a bye to the Semi Finals after Martin Williams, Malcolm Furneaux & Mike Jefferies (Penlee) were unable to take there place in the finals.  After a slow start Terry Bray, Gillian Cawrse & Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) established a 12-6 lead with three ends to play against Pam Williams, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) which they defended winning 12-11.  Kath Goodman, Luke Jolly & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) comfortably defeated Mike Richards, Tom Lapworth & Keith Williams (Penlee) 14-2.

In the Semi Finals Hore comfortably defeated Matthews 12-2 and after opening up a 6-2 lead Watson survived a late rally by Hamley picking up 2 on the last end to win 8-7.  In the final Watson picked up 3 on the first end before successive singles over the second to fourth ends to level the scores 3-3.  Watson scored singles on the next two ends to again establish a lead before a 3 on the sixth end put Hore in front for the first time in the game. Watson drew level on the eighth end before successive scores for Hore on the closing ends saw Hore claim the title for a second successive year.
