INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Dorset for the final group matches of the season.  The Premier Team went into the match knowing that 11 points would be enough to qualify for the knockout competition later in the season but had their sights firmly set on winning the match.

The first session saw the points shared with Nigel Nicholls winning 17-9 in the Singles and Elise Daniell & Luke Jolly 18-10 in the Pairs.  The second session saw Dorset seize the initiative taking three of the four mats with Cornwall's solitary win recorded by Tom Westlake, Dennis Shorthouse, Neil Gribble & Peter Hore 7-6 in the Fours.  At the halfway stage Dorset led 10 points to 6 and 100 shots to 79.

The third session proved crucial in determining the outcome of the match with Cornwall retaking the initiative in fine style winning all four games and the bonus points.  In the Singles Nigel Nicholls won 18-11 and Richard Kerr 15-8.  In the Pairs Elise Daniell & Luke Jolly won 19-11 and David Balow & David Balow 18-11.  With 18 points on the board Cornwall could go into the final session knowing that qualification for the main competition was secure.

The final session saw Cornwall confirm a well deserved victory with another three wins.  In the Triples Ken Horrell, Linda Martin & Nicholas Truscott won 12-10 and in the Fours Richard Brown, Chris Roberts, Kevin Williams & Percy Tripp won 10-6 and Tom Westlake, Dennis Shorthouse, Neil Gribble & Peter Hore 7-4 which also secured the Fours bonus points for Cornwall.  The final match score Dorset 14 points 175 shots Cornwall 26 points 180 shots.  With Devon and Somerset drawing 20-20 in the days other group match Cornwall finish top of the South West group with an increased margin of 16 points over Devon.

Cornwall can now look forward to their first ever fixture in the Main Championship at Premier Team level which will provide a great opportunity to judge the progress made by the team over the past two seasons.

The A Team went into the match knowing that they were at best playing for third place in the group.  The first session went Dorset's way with only Alan Holden winning for Cornwall 19-8 in the Singles.  The second session was better for Cornwall taking 5 points courtesy of Diane Williams, Martin Williams & Keith Williams drawing 7-7 and Joe Dixon, Carolyn Stanley & Gary Davey winning 12-4 in the Triples.  Henry Matthews, Ruth Newbury, Brenda Sleep and Derek Newton won 11-6 in the Fours.  At the halfway point Dorset led 9 points to 7 but trailed 82 shots to 85.

Like the Premier Team the A Team dominated the third session taking all the points on offer.  In the Singles Graham Reeves won 18-6 and Alan Holden 26-5.  In the Pairs Graham Ford & John Worton won 17-9 and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burdon 20-9.  In the final session the points were shared with Dorset taking the Triples and Cornwall the Fours.  Graham Luke, Sandra Worton, Keith Matthews & Brian Wakeley winning 12-6 and Henry Matthews, Ruth Newbury, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton 13-2.  The final match score Dorset 15 points Cornwall 25 and Dorset 147 shots Cornwall 205.

Team manager Nigel Nicholls said, "I am delighted with the steady improvement both teams have shown over the season. The performances in the last few games have been impressive and we look forward with confidence to the knockout stage as champions of the South West group."

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday the final round of ESMBA Inter County Championship round robin matches will be played with Cornwall travelling to the Dorset Bowls Resort in Bere Regis to take on Dorset and Devon hosting Somerset at Isca Bowls Club in Exeter.

Cornwall go into the weekend at the top of the table with a 10 point lead over Devon, 15 points ahead of Somerset and 19 points ahead of Dorset.  In order to secure a place in the main championship Cornwall need to score 11 of the 40 points possible in the match regardless of the result of the Devon v Somerset match although the target for the team is very much to round off the season with a victory and securing the top spot and hopefully a bye into the quarter finals of the knock out competition.  It is understood that Cornwall will not know their opponents until after the last group game between West Midlands and Cheshire is played on the 11th January.

Cornwall's A Team will be playing for pride on Sunday with their hopes of making the main competition already extinguished but a win by 3 or more points will see them overhaul Dorset for third place.

BRITISH ISLES CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's representatives in the England team at the British Isles Championship Peter Hore and Nigel Nicholls contributed to England taking second place in the team event and securing the Ronnie McDermott trophy for the overall top points score.

England had considerable success in the individual championships with Shropshire's Alan Jones and Allan Williams winning the Pairs, Devon's Bronagh Toleman, James Smith and Lee Toleman winning the Triples and Northamptonshire's Leigh Hall, Chris Weston and Edward Sawbridge with Oxfordshire's A J Brown winning the Fours.

Elise Daniell and David Studden took their places in an inexperienced England 'A' team taking part in the Team event where England secured the runners up spot behind Ireland.  Callum Beale (Northants), Dan Winmill (Somerset) and Darren Cookson (West Yorks.) won a tight final game in the Triples against the Irish 11-10 to pip them to top spot.
