ESMBA Inter County Championship

 

On Sunday (25 September) Cornwall hosted Devon in the first round of ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures at Fowey Community Leisure Centre with Devon coming out on top in both the Premier and A Team games.

 

With Cornwall’s bowlers having to contend with both a new venue and new playing mats Devon started much the stronger team in the Premier Team match claiming a clean sweep in the Singles and Pairs.  Cornwall fared much better in the second session with three wins from the four games.  David Griffin, Brenda Sleep and Max Burden (12-9) and Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (15-11) in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Graham Ford and Chris Roberts (11-8) in the Fours.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall trailed 6 points to 10 and 83 shots to 97.

 

The third session saw a much stronger performance from Cornwall’s Singles with Peter Hore (18-5) and Nigel Nicholls (16-9) claiming commanding victories over their opposition with the margin wiping out the deficit from the morning session to secure the two bonus points on offer.  A further two points were claimed by Tony Baldwin and Karen Watson (15-14) in the Pairs, Devon however claimed the Pairs bonus points.  With a session to play the score read Cornwall 14 points 142 shots Devon 14 points 138 shots.

 

With the match finally balanced Cornwall could however only manage one win in the final session of Triples and Fours, Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (12-9) in the Triples.  Cornwall however claimed the bonus points from the Triples to leave the final match score reading Cornwall 18 points 178 shots Devon 22 points 177 shots.

The A Team looked to be heading for a heavy first session loss before strong comebacks from both Singles players Robert Flower (17-14) and Terry Bray (12-11) saw the session shared.  The second session saw Cornwall record three points from the eight on offer, Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger (12-8) in the Triples and Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Martin Boraston & Peter Hamley (9-9) in the Fours.  Halfway through the match Cornwall trailed 7 points to 9 and 77 shots to 101.

 

Devon further extended their lead in the match during the third session, claiming five points to Cornwall’s three.  Terry Bray completing an unbeaten day in the Singles with a 13-13 draw and Tony Jago and Luke Jolly recovering from a heavy defeat in the morning to take an 11-9 win in the Pairs.  Going into the last session the score read Cornwall 10 points 119 shots Devon 18 points 151 shots.  The final session saw Cornwall only able to muster a further two points thanks to Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger’s 15-9 win in the Triples leaving the final score as Cornwall 14 points 156 shots Devon 26 points 187 shots.

Local Leagues

 

Local league action gets underway as we move into October with the competition again split into four areas; West, Central, North and East.

 

England Ladies Match

 

Elise Daniell (Holmans) travels to Bedfordshire this weekend to take her place in the England Ladies Team taking on an Irish Ladies team in the first match of its kind for the ESMBA. 

 

Masters Singles

 

County Singles player Nigel Nicholls  (Newlyn Trinity) travels to the Wey Valley Indoor Bowls Club in Guildford, Surrey to take on the challenge of the Masters Singles, a new competition on the Short Mat Bowls Calendar featuring players from England, Belguim, Sweeden and Ireland.  Nigel faces Ben Haulkham (Eng), Robert Kidd (Ire) and Chris Mann (Eng) in the group stages.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Following the County Trials and Team Practice Days over the weekend a team of 40 bowlers to represent Cornwall in the first Inter County match of the season against Devon on Sunday (25 September) has been selected.  The match takes place at Fowey Community Centre and gets under way at 11am.

 

Cornwall’s Premier Team will be looking for an improvement on last year’s performance in the groups stages when they averaged just over 16 out of a possible 40 points in each game, finishing bottom of the south west group with 98 points.  Cornwall subsequently went out of the consolation knockout competition with a heavy 33-7 defeat in the quarter finals against Hampshire.

 

The A Team start the season as defending A Team Consolation Champions having won last year’s championship scoring 10 out of 12 points in the final session in the final against Hampshire to win 21-19 and claim Cornwall’s 3rd title in the past 5 seasons.  In the group stages last year Cornwall averaged 21 points a game to see them finish third in a tight group just 7 points behind group winners Somerset.

 

At the time of writing the final team selection is not known.

 

ENGLAND WEEKEND

 

Holman’s bowler Peter Hore enjoyed a successful weekend with the England squad recording 8 wins out of 8 over the two days, playing in various team positions and disciplines.

 

The England Team recorded a 62 points to 10 points win over the Presidents Select Team on Saturday.  The match, which brings together a team of made up primarily of volunteers who put in many hours of hard work to keep the sport running, is one of the practice games for the full England squad in the run up to the major championships.  Two local bowlers were invited this year, Elise Daniell and Nicholas Truscott, from the Holmans Club.  Both were placed into Fours with bowlers from other counties each playing two games against England squad members.  Elise’s team enjoyed two well contested games but went down to narrow defeats on both occasions.  Nicholas’s team were defeated in the morning session but came back in the afternoon to record 2 of the President’s teams 10 points by defeating the two times National Championship winning four of Warwick France, Allan Williams, Chris Shakeshaft and Chris Williams 9-7 despite dropping a score of five on one end.

 

On Sunday the England Team defeated both Cheshire and Kent by 24 points to 8.  The England Ladies team, which includes Elise Daniell, continued their preparation for the International Match v Ireland over the weekend of 1st & 2nd October with a 16-16 draw against a select team.

COUNTY TRIALS

 

The new season gets underway over the weekend when the county team trials and squad practice days take place at Fowey Leisure Centre.  Over the two days the 52 bowlers who have accepted there invitation to trial will be whittled down to 40 to represent Cornwall on Sunday week, the 25 September, against Devon at Fowey in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

 

ENGLAND v ENGLAND PRESIDENTS SELECT

 

Four members of last year’s squad will however miss the trials and practice day as they will be travelling to Bedford for the first weekend of competitive action for the England Squad.  Peter Hore (Holmans) and Karen Watson (Treviscoe) will be in the England Team to face an England Presidents which includes Peter’s Holmans club mates Elise Daniell and Nicholas Truscott.

Summer League

The final group fixtures were completed last week in the East area with Wanderers claiming a 20-7 win away to Boscastle Bees and Tintagel Heralds taking a narrow 13-11 win over club mates Tintagel Knights. Wanderers therefore claim the place in the county final against Withiel Oaks to be played over two legs at Withiel on Wed 28th September and Dobwalls the following night, Thursday 29th September.

England

Cornwall’s two England squad members Peter Hore (Holmans) and Karen Watson (Treviscoe) recently travelled to the Midlands for the first practice day of the new season. The squad members were mixed into different teams throughout the day with both Peter and Karen reported as playing well throughout the day in various team positions. Peter’s teams recorded 2 wins during the day with Karen recording 1. Both will be looking to build on those results during the next practice day this Saturday (10th September).

One week later, on Saturday 17 September, Peter & Karen will be part of the England squad taking on the England Presidents team which includes Peter’s Holmans club mates Nicholas Truscott & Elise Daniell. In a double header weekend the England team will face the county champions Cheshire the following day. Results over this weekend will play a part in the forming of the England team for the British Isles Championship in Dumfries over the weekend on 19th and 20th November.

Elise Daniell has also been selected for the England Ladies team to face an Armargh Ladies team over the weekend of 1st and 2nd October.

The Cornwall County Squad for the 2011-12 season will be determined over the weekend of 17 and 18 September with a squad selection day on Saturday 17 September and squad practice on the following day ahead of the first Inter County Match v Devon on Sunday 25 September at the counties new venue of Fowey Leisure Centre.
