INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall's Short Mat Bowls Premier Team travelled to Winchester to face Hampshire in the first match of the 2022/23 Inter County Championship season.

The first session saw Hampshire take a 6-2 advantage with Nigel Nicholls Cornwall's only winner by a margin of 17-4 in the Singles.  The second session again saw a 6-2 advantage to Hampshire with the Triple of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott and Martin Boraston taking Cornwall's only points with a 23-5 win.  At the lunch break Hampshire led by 12 points to 4 and 102 shots to 86.

The third session saw Hampshire take another 6-2 advantage with Nicholls again the sole points scorer for Cornwall winning 19-8.  Cornwall claimed the bonus points for the Singles .  The final session saw the pattern of 6-2 session advantages to Hampshire completed with Daniell, Truscott and Boraston Triple winning 18-11.  Cornwall claimed the bonus points for the Triples.

Two games across the day finished with a margin of 2 shots and three with a margin of 4 shots highlighting the competitive nature of the day's bowling.

The final match score was Hampshire 28 points 207 shots Cornwall 12 points 172 shots.  In the day's other Premier One Group One match Dorset defeated Devon 35 points to 5.  Dorset won the A Team match between the two counties 25 points to 15.

The next event on the County Calendar is the first of three rounds of Inter Area competition on Saturday 8th October.  The competition has been revised this year in response to reduced player availability and will only require a minimum of 10 players per area and each area will play each other over the course of the day.  On Sunday 9th both County Premier and A Teams travel to Bere Regis to face Dorset.

The closing date for County Competition entries is this Friday, 30th September.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall's Premier Team will travel to the Riverside Indoor Bowling Club in Winchester to take on Hampshire in the first of six matches in the group stages of the English Short Mat Bowls Association Inter County Championship.  Cornwall last faced Hampshire in a Quarter Final match in 2011 with Hampshire winning on that day.

The competition takes on a new format this year with Cornwall one of eight counties in the Premier One competition with Devon and Dorset also in Group 1.  Kent, Esssex, West Midlands and Norfolk amake up the eight in Group 2.  The top two from each group will progress to a knockout competition to determine the English County Champions whilst the two counties finishing fourth in there respective groups will play off with the losing team relegated to the Premier Two competition for the 2023/24 season.  Other rule changes see matches start at 1030, no pre game roll ups and no longer a need to nominate top eight players.    

Cornwall's A Team will play their first match in two weeks time when both teams travel to Dorset.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR

Over the weekend three local bowlers travelled to Belfast to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open.

Nigel Nicholls enjoyed a solid day one winning all three games played, 15-4 against Kenny McClintock (IRE), 11-4 against Valerie Witherow (IRE) and 7-4 against Charlie Clarke (IRE).  Sunday morning saw Nigel confirm top spot in Group 6 with an 8-8 draw against Joel Hager (SWE), a match which can be viewed here
Nigel lost in the first round of the knockout competition to Raymond Stubbs (IRE) 2-12.

Elise Daniell had a mixed first day with defeat in her first two games against Andy Ritchie (IRE) 4-13 and Joseph Beattie (IRE) 2-15.  Saturday afternoon a reversal of fortunes with wins against Stephen Cupples (IRE) 20-2 and Olle Backgren (SWE) 15-3.  These results left Elise third in Group 4 and a place in the Plate competition where she lost in the first round to Alan McCoombe (IRE) 5-11. 

Peter Hore found himself on the wrong end of a number of close results through Saturday losing all four games played, 6-7 to Alex Tymon (ENG), 7-8 to Fred George (SCO), 6-11 to Mark Chittock (ENG) and 9-11 to Andy Howard (IRE).  Sunday morning saw Peter against the number 1 ranked player Mark Beattie (IRE) losing 1-18.  Peter went into the Shield competition where he lost in the first round to Mildred Conium (IRE) 5-12.

Changes to World Rankings and Order of Merit points were not available at the time of writing.

The trio are joined by David Studden in the entry for the next SMPT event, the Norwegian Open over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd October.

COUNTY TEAM
On Sunday around 40 bowlers attended a trials and practice day at Carnmoggas.

Four rounds of games gave a good opportunity for Team Manager Nigel Nicholls, Premier Team Captain Peter Hore and A Team Captain Dennis Shorthouse to review the form of the bowlers in attendance.  With a number of players stepping down from the squad that last played prior to the Covid Pandemic in January 2020 the squad sees a number of new faces and some returning players.

The Premier Team's first match is away to Hampshire in Winchester on Sunday 25th September.  The A Team will play their first match on Sunday 9th October when both teams are away to Dorset at Bere Regis.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Cornwall's Nigel Nicholls, Peter Hore and Elise Daniell travel to Belfast this coming weekend to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open competition.

Elise, currently ranked 47th in the SMPT rankings, faces Andy Ritchie (IRE - 455), Stephen Cupples (IRE - 711), Nigel Morris (IRE - 203), Olle Backgren (SWE - 61) and Joseph Beattie (IRE - 8) in group 4 of the round robin stages played through Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Nigel, currently ranked 12th, faces Kenny Mcclintock (IRE - 419), Malachy Mcskeane (IRE - N/A), Valerie Witherow (IRE - 196), Charlie Clarke (IRE - 269) and Joel Hager (SWE - 13) in group 6.

Peter, currently ranked 31st, faces Mark Chittock (ENG - 15), Fred Wyness (SCO - 354), Alex Tymon (ENG - 144), Mark Beattie (IRE - 1) and Andy Howard (IRE - 48) in group 32.

COUNTY TEAM TRIALS

Trials for the County Squad will be held on Sunday at Carnmoggas ahead of the start of the season on 25th September when the Premier Team travel to Winchester to face Hampshire.  The A Team will play their first match on Sunday 9th October when both teams are away to Dorset at Bere Regis.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR

The local bowlers competed in the recent Short Mat Players Tour UK Open.  

Nigel Nicholls won three out of five games in the group stages to progress to the Cup Knockout where he was defeated 7-12 by Jonathan Payne (BEL) in the round of 64 amassing 79 World Ranking points to stay in 12th place overall in the World Rankings.  

Peter Hore won one out of four games in the group stages to progress to the Plate Knockout where he enjoyed a run through to the round of 16, defeating Saul Featherstone (ENG) 8-7, Matthew Hamilton (NIR) 12-5 before losing 6-16 to Jack Pye (ENG) scoring 38 World Ranking points to move up 4 places to 31st place in the World Rankings.

Elise Daniell had a tough weekend failing to win any games over the two days dropping 5 places in the World Rankings to 47th place.

All three bowlers return to Short Mat Players Tour action over the weekend of 17th and 18th September for the Irish Open at the Belfast Indoor Bowls Club.
