CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE 28 February 2010

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s Premier and A teams were both on the receiving end of heavy defeats in the Semi Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition in Northampton on Saturday.

 

The Premier Team faced Surrey who proved too Strong for Cornwall from the outset opening up a 7 points 58 shots to 1 point 43 shots lead in the first session of Singles and Pairs, Cornwall’s point recorded by Kevin Williams & Michael Widger (Porthleven) with a 12-12 draw.  In the second session, the first for Triples and Fours, Cornwall picked up 2 of the 8 points on offer with a 12-4 win for the Triple of Jim Stanley, Pam Williams & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East).  At the half way point in the match Surrey held a commanding lead of 13 points 91 shots to 3 points 75 shots.

 

Cornwall’s best session of the day came in the afternoon Singles and Pairs with a 17-12 win for Peter Hore (Holmans) in the Singles and 11-8 win for Kevin Williams & Michael Widger in the Pairs.  With a session to play Surrey has already amassed the 21 points needed to secure victory and a place in next Sunday’s final.  The final session was played out with Cornwall again scoring just 2 points from a 15-12 win in the Triples secured by Jim Stanley, Pam Williams & Graham Ford.  The final score read Surrey 31 points 201 shots Cornwall 9 points 149 shots.

The A Team fared somewhat better in the early stages of their match against Cheshire taking 3 out of the 8 points on offer in the first session of Singles and Pairs.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) winning 16-13 in the Singles and Henry Kendall (Withiel) & Carolyn Stanley (St Newlyn East) taking an 11-11 draw in the Pairs.  The second session saw the points shared 4 apiece with wins for Tony Jago (Treviscoe), Jean Roper & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) 16-4 in the Triples and Marion Keers (St Agnes), Joyce Ward (Withiel), John Keers (St Agnes) & Norman Ward (Withiel) 11-8 in the Fours.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall remained well in touch trailing by 2 points and 7 shots overall, Cheshire 9 points 95 shots Cornwall 7 points 88 shots.

 

The afternoon session for the Singles and Pairs saw Cheshire take control of the match claiming wins on all four mats to move secure the match win with a session remaining.  Cornwall claimed 2 consolation points in the final session of Triples and Fours with a 9-5 win for the Four of Marion Keers, Joyce Ward, John Keers & Norman Ward.  The final score read Cheshire 31 points 191 shots Cornwall 9 points 153 shots.

WESTERN DIVISION FOURS

 

On Saturday 21 teams from 10 clubs competed in the Western Division Fours at Marazion Community Centre. 

 

The final was contested by teams from Helston (Jennifer Addison, Terry Carroll, Fran Phillips & Dave Hickey) and St Ives (Sheryll Beckett, Elizabeth Murrish, Jeffery Beckett & Derek Murrish).  The 12 end match saw St Ives take the lead with 2 on the first end before Helston hit back with scores of 1, 3 and 1 on the next three ends to move into a lead they would not relinquish eventually running out 10-6 winners.  On route to the final the Helston team defeated teams from Troon, St Ives and Hayle with the St Ives team facing teams from Marazion and Hayle in earlier rounds.

 

COUNTY LEAGUES

 

Lostwithiel need three points from their final home match against Lanjeth on Sunday (7 March) to secure the Central Area League title and a place in the Bebbington Cup Competition on March 27th.  Closest rivals Withiel Oaks lost ground after dropping two points at home to St Agnes last week.  Withiel Elms are certain of relegation to Division One whilst Ladock B are now confirmed as Division One champions.

COUNTY FINALS

 

With the County’s participation in the Inter County Championship concluded for this season attention turns back to more local matters on Saturday with the first of the County Finals.

 

The qualifiers for the County Two Wood Singles and Four Wood Pairs will play in knockout competitions from 09.00 on Saturday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.
