National Championships
Over the past weekend attention has shifted from local matters to the first weekend of National Championship finals.

On Saturday two teams from Cornwall took part in the National Mixed Fours at Solihull Indoor Bowling Club which involved 47 teams.

Landrake's Richard & Heidi Kerr and Dianne & Dennis Shorthouse were drawn in Group Two where they lost 3-14 to Devon's Rita & John Redstone, Graham James & Lorraine Axtell and won 9-7 against Humberside's Val & Simon Smith and Irene & Bill Ballam.  These results together with a walk over awarded to them for the third match in the group saw them through to the knockout stages in second place in the group on 4 points +1 shot.0000

Elise Daniell (Holmans), Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East), Peter Hore (Holmans) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) were drawn in Group Ten where they won all three games recording the best score of all teams in the the group stages with 6 points and +33 shots.  Hampshire's Mick & Sue Potter and Emma & Baker were defeated 12-3.  North Yorkshire's  Roger Green, Debbie Taylor, Helen Hurling & Paul Johnson were comfortably beaten 16-2.  Herefordshire's  Kate Williams, Sophie Warner, Joe Loveys & John Mills were beaten 18-8.

In the knockout stages both Cornwall Fours had matches in the last 32 round against teams from West Sussex.  Shorthouse won 8-2 against Simon Herbert, Jane Adsett, Richard & Sonia Burden.  Nicholls won 16-3 against Trish Johnson, Jo Streeter, Steve Adsett, Steve Maslen.  The last 16 round saw the two Cornwall teams against each other with Nicholls' team prevailing 9-5.  Into the Quarter Finals Nicholls faced Gloucestershire's Ryan Knight, Steve Holdsworth, Rebecca Finch, Jo Featherstone and this is where their run in the competition came to an end with a 5-14 loss.

The competition was won by a team from Devon which included former Cornwall county squad member and team manager Gillian Smith who played with Diane Shepherd, George Main and Elliot James.  The Devo team picked up three shots on the last end to win the title 7-6 against Essex's  Anthony Fautley, Steve Killington, Linda Lambert & Maureen Binstead.

On Sunday attention turned to the Over 55's Pairs with Cornwall having 3 of the 64 pairs taking part.

Nigel Nicholls was joined by Kevin Williams (Porthleven) and drawn in Group Three.  They finished third in the group after defeats to Hertfordshire's Jeff Branch and Dennis Mack 6-10 and Gloucestershire's Mike & Jill Dooley 6-8.  They won their final group game against Suffolk's Bob Cousins & Derek Adams 18-6 to leave them on 2 points and +6 shots.

Duloe's Jon Read and Martin Boraston were drawn in Group Seven and went through the group stages unbeaten with wins against Devon's Richard Williams & Mike Avery 15-6,  West Midland's Steve & Tracey Bailey 14-5 and Essex's  Linda Lambert & Mo Binstead 8-5 to finish with 6 points +21 shots.

St Newlyn East's John Worton & Steve Smith were drawn in Group Fourteen and also went through the group stages unbeaten with wins against Devon's Stewart Weighill & Jim Kiltie 7-6 and Dorset's Elise & Robin Gale 8-7.  A draw against Humberside's  Dave Coultas & Graham Stubbs 9-9 saw them through on 5 points +2 shots.

Into the last 32 round of the knockout stages Worton & Smith lost to Hertfordshire's Jeff Branch and Dennis Mack 8-9.  Read & Boraston won 10-9 against Hampshire's Brian Brown & Russ Reeves.  Read & Boraston's run in the competition ended in the last 16 round with a 4-12 loss to Essex's  Nigel Reed & Adrian Atkinson.

The competition was won by Northamptonshire's Chris Hopkins and Steve McAlister who defeated Oxfordshire's Les Woodward & Chris Hasker 10-5 in the final.

Area Leagues
Two Teams for the Bebbington Cup are now known with Duloe and Blisland having secured the East and North Area league titles respectively in the past week.  

The team joining them from the Central Area will be decided on Thursday night when current leaders St Newlyn East travel to Lostwithiel and second placed Withiel Oaks host Luxulyan Maroons.  St Newlyn East hold a three shot advantage over Withiel Oaks and each match has a maximum possible 6 points available.

In the West Area Newlyn Trinity hold a seven point lead over Holmans excluding the result of their fixture away to Porthleven Fisherfolk last Thursday.  Newlyn's remaining fixture is home to Hayle Foundry on Tuesday 7th March.  Holmans are home to Marazion on Thursday 2nd March and conclude their season at Porthleven against the Fisherfolk on Thursday 9th March.

County Finals
The next County Competition action will be the County Finals over the weekend of 11th and 12th March for which a full preview will be provided next week.

Inter County Championship
Cornwall's A Team lost to Kent by 12 points and 176 shots to 28 points and 230 shots in the first Quarter Final match of the knockout competition on Sunday 12th February.

The first session of the match saw Cornwall pickup 2 points with Neil Gribble winning 16-10 in the Singles.  Cornwall's Triples picked up two wins in the second session.  Dianne Shorthouse, Dennis Shorthouse & Tony Jago 17-6 and Mark Williams,Mike Webster & David Topliffe 23-5.

Kent took control of the match in the third session winning all four games and the bonus points for the Singles and Pairs to take an unassailable 22-6 lead.  The final session saw Jago's Triple pick up a 15-9 wim which helped secure the Triples bonus points.  The Four of Henry Matthews, Simon Lees, Ray Jeffery and Morgan Lees won 12-9.

County Two Wood Singles

On Saturday the finals of the County Two Wood Singles were played at Carnmoggas.

In the Quarter Finals David Studden (Holmans) won 10-9 against Kevin Williams (Porthleven).  Graham Reeves (Landrake) received a walk over following the withdrawal of his opponent.  Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) won 12-9 against Richard Kerr (Landrake).  Martin Boraston (Duloe) won 13-9 against Simon Lees (Newlyn Trinity).

In the Semi Finals Studden won 13-10 against Reeves and Boraston won 14-6 against Tripp.  Studden won the final 11-9 against Boraston.

County Four Wood Pairs

After the completion of the Singles the County Four Wood Pairs was played at Carnmoggas.

In the Quarter Finals Nigel Nicholls & Simon Lees (Newlyn Trinity) won 12-5 against Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans).  Graham Reeves & Neil Gribble (Landrake) won 8-5 against Tony Jago (Withiel) & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East).  Nigel Taylor & Mark Payne (Penzance) won 11-7 against Brian Lewis & Martin Boraston (Duloe).  Austen Runnalls & Steve Williamson (Luxulyan) won 12-1 against Richard Clark & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls).

In the Semi Finals Nicholls & Lees won 10-2 against Reeves & Gribble.  Runnalls & Williamson won 11-2 against Taylor & Payne.  Nicholls & Lees won the final 18-3 against Runnalls & Williamson.

National Championships
This coming weekend sees the first National Championship titles decided at Solihull Indoor Bowling Club.

The Mixed Fours will be played on Saturday with two teams from Cornwall taking part. Elise Daniell (Holmans), Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East), Peter Hore (Holmans) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Richard Kerr, Dianne Shorthouse, Dennis Shorthouse & Heidi Kerr (Landrake).

On Sunday the Over 55's Pairs will be played with three pairing from Cornwall taking part. Kevin Williams (Porthleven) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Steve Smith & John Worton (St Newlyn East) and Jon Read & Martin Boraston (Duloe).

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall's A Team travelled to Bristol to face Kent in the first play off match to determine which of the three second place teams in the group stages will join the group winners in the semi finals.  At the time of writing the result of the match was unknown.

Short Mat Players Tour
Three bowlers from Cornwall travelled to Chelmsford over the weekend for the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) retains 9th in the Short Mat Players Tour rankings with 720.5 points after reaching the last 64 of the main cup competition.  

In the group stages Nigel started with a win against Shaun Howells (WAL) 14-5.  Defeat followed against Jonas Hรคger (SWE) 14-11.  Saturday's remaining games saw wins against Dawn Parkes (ENG) 14-6 and Dave Bignall (ENG) 17-6.  Sunday morning's final group game against Daniel Winmill (ENG) saw Nigel take a 10-8 win to secure second place in the group and the place in the Cup Competition.  Defeat in the first round to Nathan Haire (NIR) 8-7 ended Nigel's run in the competition.  In the season Order of Merit standings Nigel retains 7th place with 437.5 points for the season and currently holds one of the four places in the England Team in August's World Cup competition.

Peter Hore (Holmans) has dropped 10 places in the SMPT rankings with 405.75 points after reaching the last 64 of the Shield competition. 

In the group stages Saturday saw a run of defeats for Peter against Dale Thomson (ENG) 6-13, Daniel Sands (ENG) 7-14, Gary Moore (NIR) 6-16 and Bobby Addis (ENG) 19-6.  Sunday's final group game resulted in a win against Darin Graydon (NIR) 14-7.  Peter's competition ended in the first round of the Shield competition with defeat to Edwards Gittoes (WAL) 10-7.  Peter drops to 81st in the Order of Merit standings with 163.75 points.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) retains 40th in the rankings with 417.25 points after reaching the last 32 of the Plate Competition.  

In the group stages Elise started with a win against Connie Coates (ENG) 10-8 followed by defeat to Mark Spalding (ENG) 2-15.  Elise's remaining matches on Saturday saw wins against Martin Harries (WAL) 14-5 and Edward Gittoes (WAL) 13-7.  Sunday morning's final group game against John Sewell (ENG) saw a 11-9 win.  Elise missed out on a place in the Cup competition on shot difference.  In the first round of the Plate competition Elise defeated Darin Graydon (NIR) 14-4.  Elise's run in the competition ended in the next round with a 7-11 defeat to Adam Bailey (ENG).  Elise drops to 61st in the Order of Merit Standings with points.

The final singles tournament of the season, the World Masters, takes place over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd April at Belfast Indoor Bowling Club.

County Finals
On Saturday 18th February the first County Finals of the season will be decided at Carnmoggas with the Two Wood Singles played during the morning and Four Wood Pairs during the afternoon.

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall's A Team travel to Bristol to face Kent in the first  play off match to determine which of the three second place teams in the group stages will join the group winners in the semi finals.  If Cornwall are successful they will face Shropshire in Solihull next weekend with the winners of that match joining Devon, Norfolk and Hampshire in the Semi Finals on 26th March.

Short Mat Players Tour
This coming weekend see's 192 bowlers, including three from Cornwall, converge on the Falcon Bowling and Social Club in Chelmsford for the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) who currently holds 9th in the SMPT rankings with a win ratio of 69.83% is drawn in Group 4 where he will face Daniel Winmill (ENG, Rank 15, Win Ratio 65.87%), Dave Bignall (ENG, 286, 50%), Dawn Parkes (ENG, 644, 28.57%), Shaun Howells (WAL, 644, 28.57%) and Jonas Hager (SWE, 42, 69.83%).   Nigel has faced Jonas twice this season, most recently in the last 32 of the Norwegian Open in October winning 12-7 and in the group stages of the UK Open in August winning 10-9.

Peter Hore (Holmans) is currently 33rd in the rankings with a win ratio of 56.82% and is drawn in Group 17.  Peter's opponents in the group stages will be Darin Graydon (IRE, 397, 27.12%), Bobby Addis (ENG, N/A, N/A), Dale Thomson (ENG, N/A, N/A), Daniel Sands (ENG, 46, 59.33%) and Gary Moore (IRE, 413, 52.20%).

Elise Daniell (Holmans) is currently 40th in the rankings with a win ratio of 41.57% and is drawn in Group 18.  Elise's opponents in the group stages will be Edward Gittoes (WAL, 621, 16.67%), Mark Spalding (ENG, 218, 37.50%), Connie Coates (ENG, 680, 7.69%), John Sewell (ENG, N/A, N/A) and Martin Harries (WAL, 71, 71.54%)
