INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall's Premier & A Teams travel to Bere Regis to face Dorset in their opening fixtures of the 2023/4 Inter County Championship season.

The Premier Team, who had had a disappointing season last year, will be looking to regain the form they had shown in reaching the later stages of the Inter County in the years prior to the Covid closedown of competitive bowls.  An opening fixture against Dorset, the reigning English County Champions will prove to be a stern test for new Team Manager Luke Jolly's new look team.  

The A Team, who won both their fixtures against Dorset last season, has a number of changes from the team that played last year.

Looking ahead the season gets into full swing as we move into October with the Area League program getting under way in the first week of October.  The opening round of Inter Area League fixtures will be played on Sunday 8th October at Carnmoggas.  A busy weekend for the Premier Team players on the 15th and 16th October with the County Triples on the Saturday and the Premier Team away to Somerset on the Sunday.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Over the weekend three local bowlers travelled to Belfast for the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open competition.

Nigel Nicholls came away from the weekend with the best results of the three claiming 102 ranking points by reaching the Last 32 of the Cup competition.  Nigel started Saturday with a 9-5 win against Michael Campbell followed by defeat to Colin Deering 5-12.  Saturday afternoon brought a brace of wins against Lawrence Moffat 9-6 and Adrian McCaw 17-2.  On Sunday morning Nigel rounded off his group games with a dominant 18-3 win against Aofie Fay which took Nigel to the top of Group 22 with 12 points and +30 shots.

In the Cup competition Nigel met Dafydd Howell in the Last 64 round winning 13-5 before losing in the Last 32 round to Andrew Shorney 9-10.  Nigel climbs 2 places to 8th in the World Rankings and 32 places to 10th in the Order of Merit standings.

Peter Hore started Saturday well with wins in his opening games against Ivan McClintock 10-8 and James Shaw 10-7.  In a group of 5 players Peter lost his last game on Saturday against Ciaran Green 3-14,  A further defeat on Sunday morning to eventual runner up Declan McCann 7-12 left Peter second in the Group  18 with 6 points with a place in the Cup competition.

In the Cup competition Peter met Christopher Wylie in the Last 64 round losing 5-14, to finish the event with 86 points and a 19 place jump to 37th in the World Rankings and moving up 66 places to 41st in the Order of Merit.

Elise Daniell started Saturday with a defeat to Mark Sproule 5-15 before following up with a win against Michael Hogg 10-2.  Saturday afternoon saw defeat to Jonathan Payne 3-18 and a win against Andrew Cockcroft 10-8.  A big win against Ian Ding, 14-1, on Sunday morning left Elise as one of three bowlers on 9 points in the group, with the worst short difference of the three placed fourth in Group 10.

In the Plate competition Elise met Edward Law in the Last 128 round winning 8-7.  In the Last 64 round Elise lost 3-12 to Daniel Sands to finish the weekend with 39 points, dropping one place in the World Ranking standings to 34th and four places in the Order of Merit to 32nd.

Shield - Sam Rodgers 10-1 Sam Moore
Plate - Joseph Beattie 12-6 Rachel McDonnell
Cup - Gary McNabb 7-6 Declan McCann

The next SMPT event is in a month's time with the Norwegian Open which includes a number of local bowlers in the entry.

COUNTY OPEN DAY
Around 24 bowlers made the trip to Carnmoggas for the County Open day on Sunday.

COUNTY SQUAD PRACTICE DAY
On Sunday the County Squad will gather at Carnmoggas for the final practice before the first match of the season on Sunday 1st October away to Dorset.

COUNTY TRIALS
On Sunday the County Team trials took place at Carnmoggas.  With a number of players unavailable due to clashes with outdoor bowls finals, Team Manager Luke Jolly used the day to try a number of combinations of players ahead of selecting the teams for Cornwall's first match of the season against Dorset on Sunday 1st October.  The squad will get together on Sunday 24th September at Carnmoggas for a practice day ahead of the first fixture.

OPEN DAY
On Sunday 17th September the CCSMBA are hosting an open practice day at Carnmoggas between 1000 and 1500 with a fee of £4.00 per player.

SUMMER LEAGUE
The Summer League concluded recently with a two legged final between the Western Wanderers and Blisland.  The first leg was played at Redruth on the 20th August with Blisland winning 16-13.  The second leg at Blisland was played on 29th August with Blisland winning 18-8 and 34-21 overall.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Three local bowlers travel to Belfast this weekend for the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open which see's 216 players entered.  Drawn in 36 groups of 6 the event follows the usual SMPT format of Round Robin followed by knockout competitions.

Elise Daniell (Rank 33 - Win rate 42.71% from 199 games) is drawn in Group 10 (group stats) where she will face Jonathan Payne (BEL) (5 - 69.38% from 405), Mark Sproule (IRE) (N/A - 76.92% from 13), Ian Ding (ENG) (680 - 16.67% from 6), Michael Hogg (IRE) (N/A) and Andrew Cockcroft (IRE) (147 - 46.11% from 167).

Peter Hore (56 - 53.61% from 194) is drawn in Group 18 (group stats) where he will face James Shaw (IRE) (300 - 59.26% from 27), Ivan McClintock (IRE) (168 - 54.17% from 24), Richard Glass (IRE) (406 - 42.86% from 7), Ciaran Green (IRE) (222 - 52.43% from 87) and Stephen Mulholland (IRE) (590 - 39.13% from 69).

Nigel Nicholls (10 - 69.02% from 255) is drawn in Group 22 (group stats) where he will face Colin Deering (IRE) (114 - 60.71% from 28), Michael Campbell (IRE) (265 - 53.85% from 13), Aoife Fay (IRE) (680 - 0.00% from 12), Adrian McCaw (IRE) (167 - 38.89% from 90) and Lawrence Moffat (SCO) (12 - 67.05% from 176).

NEWS RELEASE - 3 September 2023

The new Short Mat Bowls season in Cornwall gets under way on Sunday with the County Team Trials at Carnmoggas starting at 0900.

New Team manager Luke Jolly, a National Championship winner in 2015 and former member of the England Squad, will be looking for a return to the form shown by Cornwall in the few years before the enforced gap in competition in recent years.

From Sunday's Team Trials the formation of the Premier and A Teams will be considered and players invited back to a County Squad Practice Day at Carnmoggas on Sunday 24th September.  

Both the Premier and A team travel to Bere Regis on Sunday 1st October to take on Dorset, who are the reigning England Inter County Champions.
