Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 22 October 2017

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club, the counties first home match of the season.

Cornwall started the Premier Team match well with three wins out of four in the first session.  Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore winning 17-12 and 18-6 respectively in the Singles and John Worton & Dave Studden winning 11-10 in the Pairs.  The second session saw points shared with Somerset taking the Triples and Cornwall the Fours.  Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Karen Watson & Luke Jolly winning 9-8 and Elise Daniell, Ray Jeffery, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale winning 15-10.  Cornwall led 10-6 at the half way point in the match.

A strong third session put the match result beyond doubt with Cornwall taking three wins and a draw.  In the Singles Nicholls won 20-7 and Hore drew 10-10.  Worton & Studden and Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse won 13-12 and 17-9 respectively.  Cornwall took the bonus points from both disciplines to lead 21-7 with a session to go.  The final session saw Somerset playing for pride and they did just that taking 9 of the 12 points on offer. For Cornwall Bob Banks, Dennis Shorthouse & Mike Dyer drew 10-10 in the Triples and Beale's Four won 17-12.  Cornwall fell short for the bonus points in both disciplines.  The final match result Cornwall 24 points 191 shots Somerset 16 points 188 shots.  The days other match in the group saw Devon & Dorset draw 20-20.

Pairs:- John Worton (St Newlyn East) & David Studden (Holmans) 11-10 & 13-12 and Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel) 8-16 & 17-9.
Triples:- Nathan Waters (Withiel), Keith Williams (Penlee) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 6-11 & 8-17 and Bob Banks (Boscastle), Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) & Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) 10-14 & 10-10.
Fours:- Graham Reeves (Saltash), Richard Kerr (Landrake), Karen Watston (Saltash) & Luke Jolly (Withiel) 9-8 & 2-24 and Elise Daniell (Holmans), Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) & Callum Beale (Withiel) 15-10 & 17-12.

Cornwall's A Team's difficult season continued with a heavy defeat at the hands of Somerset by 8 points to 32 and 147 shots to 243.  In the first session Cornwall scored a single point in the Singles with Ronnie Thomas drawing 11-11.  The second session saw a win for Heidi Kerr, Betty Temple Smith & Keith Matthews in the Triples 16-9.  

The afternoon saw Thomas again draw, this time 13-13, in the Singles and Glynn Roy & Alan Holden win 17-12 in the Pairs.  The final session saw Meg Horrell, Graham Ford, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell win 10-9.  The other game in the group saw Devon win 24 points to 16 at home to Dorset.

Singles:- Mike Webster (Blisland) 6-23 & 8-18 and Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) 11-11 & 13-13.
Pairs:- Glynn Roy (Withiel) & Alan Holden (Landrake) 8-15 & 17-12 and Des Pengelly (Landrake) & Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) 7-17 & 10-13.
Triples:- Carol Dodd (St Newlyn East), John Dodd (St Newlyn East) & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) 4-15 & 4-23 and Heidi Kerr (Landrake), Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) 16-9 & 9-16
Fours:- Meg Horrell (Withiel), Graham Ford (Ladock), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) & Ken Horrell (Withiel) 5-20 & 10-9 and Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake), Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Lynne Davey (Landrake) & Gary Davey (Landrake) 8-13 & 11-16.

Cornwall are next in action on Sunday 12th November when they host Dorset at Carnmoggas.

County 2 Wood Singles
On Saturday 37 bowlers took part in the County Two Wood Singles at Carnmoggas split into two sessions of play.  In the morning 17 players were drawn in 4 groups with the group winners straight through to finals day.

Keith Matthews (Blisland) beat Luke Jolly (Withiel) 12-11 in the last game to top Group One on 6 points +16 shots.  Jolly & Callum Beale (Withiel) both finished on 4 +12.   In Group Two Karen Watson (Saltash) came from behind with two maximum scores on the last two ends to beat Elise Daniell (Holmans) 11-10 and top the group with 6 +26, Daniell finished second with 4 +12.

Kevin Williams (Porthleven) and Mike Webster (Blisland) drew the final game in Group Three which saw Williams go through with 5 +19 just ahead of Webster's 5 +16.  Richard Kerr (Landrake) topped Group Four with 5 +7 ahead of John Worton (St Newlyn East) 4 +17.

The afternoon saw 20 players drawn into 5 groups with the group winners and three best runners up going into a knockout round.

Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) topped Group One with 6 +16 ahead of Nathan Waters (Withiel) on 3 -5.  Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) topped Group Two 6 +11 ahead of Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) on 4 +12.  Group Three was topped by Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) with 5 +18 ahead of Bob Smith (Porthleven) on 4 +3.

Howard McCormack (Penlee) topped Group Four 6 +11 after winning the deciding game 12-7 leaving Peter Hore (Holmans) second with 4 -2.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) topped Group Five with 6 +28 ahead of David Topliffe (Bscastle) on 4 +18.  The knockout round saw McCormack defeat Topliffe 13-10.  Sleep won 12-8 against Smith.  Reeves defeated Shorthouse 11-9 and Boraston took the final place at finals day with a 13-6 win against Temple-Smith.

This weekend a number of local bowlers travel to the Midlands to take part in the ESMBA Open Triples.  Nigel Nicholls has a longer journey for his weekend's competition as he makes the trip to Norway for the latest Short Mat Players Tour event in Skein where he will be looking to further consolidate his claim for a place in next August's SMPT World Cup event.  Nigel is drawn in Group 14

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association

County Two Wood Pairs
Over the weekend 30 teams played for one of eight places in the County Two Wood Pairs Finals with 14 on Saturday and 16 on Sunday split into four groups on each day with the group winners claiming a finals spot.

On Saturday Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) topped Group One with an unbeaten 6 points +29 shots ahead of Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) on 4 +8.  Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) topped Group Two with 5 +33 with Lynette Golledge & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) second on 3 -10.

In Group Three Alan Holden & Des Pengelly (Landrake) were unbeaten with 4 +12 with John & Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) second on 2 -2.  Mark Payne & Howard McCormack (Penlee) topped Group Four with 4 +12 ahead of C Williams & Jean Welch (Marazion) 2 +1.

On Sunday Bob Banks & David Topliffe (Boscastle) topped Group One with 4 +13 ahead of Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gary Davey (Landrake) on 4 +3.  Ray Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) came out on top in Group Two with 4 +36 with Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr (Landrake) second on 4 +11.

Nathan Waters & Luke Jolly (Withiel) topped Group Three with 4 +12 with Christopher Harris & June Trestrail (Hayle) second on 4 +8.  The final qualifiers were Kath Goodman (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) who were the only unbeaten team on Sunday finishing on 6 +33 with Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) second on 4 +15.

The eight winners go through to the finals on Sunday 25th March.

Inter County Championship
Cornwall face Somerset on Sunday at Carnmoggas in the latest round of Inter County Championship fixtures.

Cornwall's Premier Team are unbeaten in the opening two fixtures this year and will be looking for a solid performance at home against a Somerset team they have already beaten at Donyatt this year.  The A Team have struggled so far this year recording just 24 points from the opening two fixtures.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 8 October 2017

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced Devon ESMBA Inter County Championship at Isca IBC in Exeter.

In the Premier Team match it was Devon, who had only recorded just 29 points in their opening two fixtures, who started positively winning three of the four games in the first session.  Cornwall's only points coming from Peter Hore's 14-13 win in the Singles.  The points were shared in the second session with Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams grabbing a last gasp 13-12 win in the Triples and Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Luke Jolly winning 11-7 in the Fours.  At the lunch break Cornwall trailed 6 points to 10 and 78 shots to 95.

The third session realised two wins for Cornwall.  Peter Hore again winning in the Singles 8-19 and David Balow & David Studden winning 12-8 in the Pairs.  The bonus points went Cornwall's way in the Singles and to Devon in the Pairs to move the match score on to Devon 16 points Cornwall 12.  The final session saw Cornwall take a points advantage to level the final match score.  Williams' Triple and Jolly's Four completing unbeaten days winning 14-10 and 22-12 respectively.  The Four of Ray Jeffery, Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale won 11-9 to see Cornwall take the Fours bonus points.  The final score Devon 20 points 182 shots Cornwall 20 points 192 shots.  The days other match in the group saw Dorset win 21-19 away to Somerset.

Cornwall's A Team again suffered defeat losing 26 points to 14 and 230 shots to 156.  In the first session Cornwall scored points in the Pairs with Glynn Roy & Alan Holden winning 15-5 and Des Pengelly & Sandra Worton drawing 11-11 in the first session.  The second session saw Heidi Kerr, Graham Ford & Keith Matthews win 16-11 in the Triples leaving Cornwall trailing 5 points to 11 at the the lunch break. 

Des Pengelly & Sandra Worton won in the afternoon Pairs 11-9 which also helped secure the bonus points by 1 shot.  The final session saw Cornwall pick up 5 points.  In the Triples Carol Dodd, John Dodd & Brian Wakeley drew 12-12.  In the Fours Meg Horrell, Nathan Waters, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell won 15-11 and Dianne Shorthouse, Rose Dyer, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey took an 11-5 win.  The final match score Devon 26 points 230 points Cornwall 14 points 156 shots. The other game in the group saw Somerset win 23 points to 17 at home to Dorset.

County Mixed Fours
On Saturday 12 teams contested the County Mixed Fours title at Carnmoggas.  Split into four group of three the group winners went through to a knockout competition.

Group One winners were Kath Goodman (Ladock), Nathan Waters (Withiel), Karen Watson (Saltash) & Luke Jolly (Withiel) who went through with 4 points +10 shots.  Beryl Langsworthy (Penlee), Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) came through Group Two with 4 +18.

Robert Rawlings, Eileen Taylor, Bill Sharp & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) topped Group Three with 4 +13.  Top points scorers from the Group stages were Elise Daniell (Holmans), Caroline Moore (Luxulyan), Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) with 4 +20 in Group Four.

In the Semi Finals Hore defeated Williams 14-2 and Jolly won 10-3 against Sleep.  The final saw Jolly open up a 9 shot lead against Hore in the first three ends going on to win 15-5.

This weekend the County Two Wood Pairs will be contested down to the last 8 over the two days at Carnmoggas.
