Inter County Championship

Cornwall travel to Wincanton on Sunday (4th January) to face Somerset in the final group match of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

In the Premier Team competition Devon, who will face Dorset on Saturday (3rd January), hold top spot with 115 points.  Somerset and Cornwall are tied on 98 points with Dorset on 89 points.  
A repeat of the home win against Somerset earlier in the season will see Cornwall qualify for the Main championship and set up preliminary round match against Avon or Gloucestershire.  Defeat will see Cornwall face either Surrey or London in the Consolation competition, all matches scheduled for the weekend of 31st January & 1st February.

Devon also hold top spot in the A Team competition with 123 points with Somerset second on 112, Cornwall third on 98 and Dorset on 67.  A Cornwall win by 15 points or more will see the team claim 2nd spot and a preliminary round match against Essex or Northamptonshire.  Consolidating 3rd spot would see Cornwall face wither Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire or Shropshire in the quarter finals of the consolation competition on the 14th or 15th February.

County Leagues Mid Season Review

The Premier Division in the Western Division is led at the Christmas break by last seasons Division One champions Holmans with Newlyn Trinity Jowsters in second and Penlee third.  Penzance Rockets hold top spot in Division One from Praa Sand Buckets and Newlyn Trinity Wreckers. Porthleven Treza hold top spot in Division Two from St Ives Trenwith and Newlyn Trinity Luggers. (Subject to confirmation)

In the Central Area the Premier Division sees the top three split by just three points with no clear front runner emerging.  Luxulyan Golds hold top spot with 39 points with Lostwithiel second on 37 and Withiel Oaks third on 36.  Withiel Oaks hold a 14 point advantage at the top of Division One with 49 from Lanjeth Greens second on 35 and Perranporth Pilchards third on 34 with a match in hand.

Newly promoted Landrake hold the top spot in the Eastern Area Premier Division with 39 with Dobwalls on 34 in second and Saltash Blues on 32 in third.  Division One sees the top three seperated by just two points with Rilla Mill top on 39 with Callington Blues second on 28 and Pelynt third on 37.

The North Area league, played to a different format see's Tintagel top of Division One on 16 points from 10 games, Lanteglos A hold second with 15 from 8, Boscastle are third with 14 from 8 and Camelford A have 13 from 6 in fourth place putting them in a good poistion with the games in hand.  Camelford B head up Division Two with 16 from 8 with St Minver on 14 from 6 in second, St Tudy on 13 from 8 in third and Poughill fourth on 12 from 6.

National Qualifiers - URGENT INFO

Bowlers taking part in the National Qualifiers must sign in at Luxulyan by 8.30 am on Saturday 10th January.

Sunday 11th January has been set aside as a reserve day if all games are not completed on the Saturday.

COUNTY SINGLES

Over the weekend (6th & 7th December) 53 bowlers competed in the qualification competition for the County Singles Championship at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

On Saturday six group winners were joined by the two best runners up to make up the eight players in the play offs for the four places in the top half of the draw in the finals.

Group Two winner Robert Flower (Tintagel) (6 pts +29 shots) was a 11-9 winner against Group One winner John Menhenick (Wadebridge) (6 +24). Group Two runner up Jim Botterill (Treviscoe) (4 +9) defeated Group Three winner Tom Lapworth (Porthleven) (4 +17) 11-8. In an all Withiel match Group Three runner up Brian Webb (4 +16) claimed a 15-5 victory over Group Four winner Joyce Ward (5 +12). The final place was claimed by Group 6 winner Dave Studden (Troon) (4 +16) with a 12-7 win against Group Five winner Carolyn Matthews (St Newlyn East) (6 +16).

Sunday’s competition saw seven group winners and one runner up going into the play offs to fill the bottom half of the final draws.

Group One winner Bob Williams (Troon) (6 +33) took an 8-6 win against Group Two winner Miriam Barbery (Dobwalls) (4 +26). Group Four winner Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) (6 +49) defeated Group Three winner Jean Roper (Dobwalls) (6 +22) 15-6. David Griffin (Lostwithiel) took advantage of the best runners up spot to defeat Group Five winner Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) (6 +18) 12-11 after an extra end. The final place went Group Seven winner Gerald Fisher (Troon) (6 +11) with a 13-8 win against Group Six winner Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) (6 +11)

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s A team travel to Winkleigh on Saturday for their outstanding fixture against Devon.

WEST AREA SINGLES

The Western Division Four Wood Singles will played at Goldsithney and Marazion on Saturday.

TWO WOOD SINGLES

On Saturday (29th November) 44 bowlers, split into eight groups, contested the qualification competition for the County Two Wood Singles at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

Defending champion Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) was undefeated to qualify from Group 1 (6 pts +20 shots) to set up a quarter final against Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) who took Group 2 with three wins (6 +8). Group 3 went the way of Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) (6 +33) who will meet Group 4 winner Jean Roper (Dobwalls) (6 +21).

A draw in his final game was enough for Peter Hore (Holmans) to claim Group 5 (5 +22) and set up a quarter final against Group 6 winner Bob Williams (Troon) (5 +12). Norman Ward (Withiel) took three wins to claim Group 7 (6 +21) and will meet Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) to claimed a tight Group 8 on shots difference (4 +21).

The final stages of the competition will be played on Sunday 8th February at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

INTER COUNTY

On Sunday (30th November) Cornwall faced Dorset in the latest round of matches in the ESMBA Inter County at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

Cornwall’s Premier Team started well against in the first session claiming three wins out of four. Nigel Nicholls (15-10) and David Studden (13-12) claiming the points in the Singles and Geoff Lane and Bill Sharp (15-9) in the Pairs. A shared second session, with wins for both Triples for Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (13-8) and Joe Coups, Gerald Fisher & Chris Roberts (8-6) saw Cornwall hold a lead at the half way point 10 points to 6 and 89 shots to 85.

The third session points were shared with Nigel Nicholls (22-7) in the Singles and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp (20-8) claiming the points for Cornwall. Keeping the scores close in the games lost ensured that Cornwall claimed the bonus points in both Singles and Pairs. With a session to play Cornwall led 18 points to 10 and 155 shots to 129. A tight final session went the way of Cornwall with wins for the Triple of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (13-12) and Fours for Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Lin Stephens & Brian Wakeley (12-7). A Draw in the other Triples for Joe Coups, Gerald Fisher & Chris Roberts (10-10) secured a session advantage and a further two bonus points.

The final match score being Cornwall 25 points 196 shots Dorset 15 points 168 shots.

In the A Team fixture Cornwall also started well claiming a first session advantage with wins for both Singles Peter Spargo (12-11) & Graham Reeves (17-14) and Carolyn Matthews & Pam Williams (20-5) in the Pairs. The advantage was further stretched in the second session thanks to wins for both Triples Una Prideaux, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (16-3) & Tony Jago, Kath Goodman & Jean Roper (11-4) and the Four of Sheila Hodge, Tom Rigler, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (13-10). At the halfway point Cornwall held a comfortable 12 points to 4 and 101 shots to 80 lead.

Dorset hit back in the third session taking three wins out of four, Peter Spargo (12-11) taking the only points for the home county. A shared final session, with Dorset winning both Triples and Cornwall taking both Fours, Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (13-2) and Sheila Hodge, Tom Rigler, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (12-8). Cornwall claimed the bonus points for most shots in the Singles, Triples and Fours.

The final match score being Cornwall 24 points 184 shots Dorset 16 points 165 shots.

COUNTY 4 WOOD MIXED PAIRS

59 pairings contested the County 4 Wood Pairs Qualification competition over the weekend at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre.

On Saturday 32 pairs competed in the round robin stage to earn a place the knock out round to play for one of the 4 places available in the competition’s finals in February. In the most closely fought of the knock out games Camilla Cawrse & Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) needed an extra end to defeat David Griffin (Lostwithiel) & Norman Ward 9-8. Miriam Barbery & Barbara James (Dobwalls) defeated Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Troon) 16-8. Melba Kitt & Darren Woolner (Saltash) were 19-6 winners against Peter Morrish & John Menhenick (Wadebridge) and Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) took the last spot on the finals line up defeating Dave Abbis & Robert Peareth (Lostwithiel) 12-6.

Sunday’s play saw 27 pairs compete in the round robin stage to earn the knock out round places. The knock out matches saw Roy Christophers & Percy Tripp (Helston) claim a 12-6 win over Val & Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) having already claimed a 10-9 win in the group stages. The closest fought game saw Joe Coups & Dave Studden (Troon) take a single shot win from Frances Walther & Judy Ramsey (Mabe) 10-9. Brenda Sleep & Jean Roper (Dobwalls) were 13-10 winners against Carol & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) and in the final game Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) were 14-3 winners against Peter Spargo & Derek Newton (Liskeard).

NEXT WEEKEND

Another busy weekend ahead with 44 bowlers entered in the County 2 Wood Singles on Saturday and Dorset are the latest opponents for the county teams on Sunday. Both days action takes place at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

The second round of Inter Area League games were played on Saturday (15th November) at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin. The two match winners from the first round of games, Central and East were up against each other with West facing North in the other game.

Central started well in the first session winning 3 out of 4 games to establish a lead early on. A similar score line in the second session left Central well in control with a 12 points to 4 and 12 shot lead at the halfway point. East recorded two wins and a draw in the third session to reduce the deficit to 6 points and 7 shots. A shared final session saw Central claim the match 23 points 170 shots to East’s 13 points 166 shots. (Scorecard can be downloaded here

The first session of the West v North match saw the points shared with West holding an 11 shot lead. West claimed 3 out of 4 games in the second session to open a 10 points to 6 and 30 shot lead at the halfway point. The third session saw the West take a clean sweep to firmly stamp there authority on the match to lead 18 points to 6 and by 63 shots with a session to play. The final session saw a repeat of the second session to leave the final score at West 28 points 215 shots North 8 points 148 shots. (Scorecard can be downloaded here

The final round of matches will be played in February when Central will face West and East take on North.

COUNTY TRIPLES

A well supported and highly competitive County Triples qualification competition was contested by 38 teams at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin on Sunday (16th November). The entrants were split into 8 groups with the group winners progressing to the County Finals in March.

The Dobwalls trio of Bill Sharp, Jean Roper and Brenda Sleep were unbeaten in three games to claim Group 1 (6 points +31 shots). Meg Horrell, Kathy Webb and Brian Webb of Withiel were also unbeaten in claiming Group 2 (6 +30). Another Withiel Trio, Joyce Ward, Eric Boddy and Norman Ward claimed the most impressive score of the day in Group 3 (6 +41). In a tight Group 4 with three teams finished on 4 points with top spot going to Lostwithiel’s Pam & Peter Hamley joined by Luxulyan’s Gillian Cawrse (4 +11).

Group 5 went the way of Penlee’s Keith Williams and Malcolm Furneaux joined by Penzance’s John Thomas (6 +10). Defending champions Bob Williams, Joe Coups and David Studden from Troon took group 6 (6 +33). A tight Group 7 went the way of Saltash’s Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner (4 +6). The St Newlyn East team of Jim Stanley, Pam Williams and Carolyn Matthews came through a tight Group 8 with three teams finishing on 4 points (4 +7).

Cornwall’s Premier Team travelled to Winkleigh on Saturday to face Devon in their latest ESMBA Inter County Championship fixture.

Cornwall started well taking an advantage in the first session with wins for Nigel Nicholls in the Singles (11-12), Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (5-19) and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp (9-13) in the Pairs. Cornwall took a lead of 6 points to 2 and 53 shots to 43 into the second session which provided just one Cornish win in the Fours for Graham Luke, Roy Christophers, Lin Stephens and Brian Wakeley (5-6). At the half way point the points were shared 8 all but Devon held a 22 shot lead, after a large win in the triples.

The third session saw Nigel Nicholls (8-18) and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp (10-11) claim wins for Cornwall to keep the points score level going into the final session although Devon extended the shots advantage to 27. The last session saw Devon make good use of the home advantage to win the match claiming 3 out of 4 wins, Cornwall’s points recorded by Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (5-12) in the Triples.

Superior scoring by Devon in the Singles, Triples and Fours saw Devon claim 6 of the 8 bonus points for most shots scored.

The final score of the match Devon 24 points 180 shots - Cornwall 16 points 141 shots.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall enjoyed a double success in Sunday’s ESMBA Inter County Championship fixture against Somerset played at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre.

PREMIER TEAM

The Premier Team match started with a tight first session which saw the points shared and just two shots separating the counties in favour of the visitors. David Studden in the Singles (14-10) and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp in the Pairs (14-11) claiming Cornwall’s points. The second session again saw the points shared with wins for the both Cornwall Triples of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (15-12) and Joe Coups, Chris Roberts & Graham Ford (13-6). At the halfway point with the points shared 8 apiece Cornwall held a slender 3 shot lead 97-94.

The third session saw Cornwall take a dominant position in the match with wins on all four mats, Nigel Nicholls (16-11) and David Studden (17-13) in the singles and Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (18-14) and Geoff Lane and Bill Sharp (14-8) in the Pairs. The solid scoring also ensured that the bonus points for most shots in each discipline went the way of Cornwall. With a session left Cornwall led 20-8 on points and 162-140 on shots. The final session saw the points shared thanks to wins for both triples, Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (9-2) and Joe Coups, Chris Roberts & Graham Ford (9-6) ensuring a further two bonus points securing the first win of the season for the Premier Team.

The final score of the match Cornwall 26 points 190 shots – Somerset 14 points 172 shots.

Cornwall hit back in the second session with wins in the Triples for Una Prideaux, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (9-7) and the Fours of Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (14-2) and Sheila Hodge, Miriam Barbery, Brenda Sleep and Derek Newton (11-3). At the halfway point Cornwall held the lead 9 points to 7 and 92 shots to 84.

The points were shared in the third session with wins for Peter Spargo (18-7) in the Singles and Carolyn Matthews & Pam Williams (14-10) in the Pairs. Wins for Una Prideaux, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (10-7) in the Triples and Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (9-4) in the Fours in the final session left the outcome of the match dependent on the bonus points for the most shots in each discipline. The additional points were shared with Somerset taking the Singles and Pairs with Cornwall taking the Triples and Fours.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

On Sunday the first round of CCSMBA Inter Area matches were contested at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre.

The East Area started the defence of the title with a well contested win over the West Area. An early advantage was established in the first session 6-2 which was further extended to 12-4 by the half way point. The third session however gave the West some hope as they recorded a 7-1 advantage to close the score up to West 13 points 127 shots East 11 points 123 shots. The East Area however held on claiming an advantage 6-2 in the fourth session to win the match with a final score of East 23 points 181 shots West 13 points 159 shots. East also claimed four additional points for the superior shots scored.

The Central Area were never in trouble in their match against the North Area with a 6-2 advantage in the first session. A shared second session left the score at the half way point 10-6 to Central. The third session saw a repeat of the first with Central extending the lead further to 16-8 and a further 6-2 advantage in the final session left the score at Central 22 points 221 shots North 10 points 140 shots. Central earned the four additional points for the superior shots scored.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall face Somerset at the Dragon Centre on Sunday with the Premier Team still seeking the first win of the season after defeats at Home to Devon and away to Dorset have left the team 20 points adrift of table topping Devon at the bottom of the table. The A Team will be looking to build on the win away to Dorset which sees them currently in third place, 7 points adrift of Somerset in second and 11 points behind Devon.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s Short Mat Bowls travelled to Lytchett Minster on Sunday to face Dorset in the second of the ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures for the season.

Dorset claimed the early advantage in the Premier Team taking three wins out of four games. Cornwall’s points recorded by Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp in the pairs with an 18-8 win, overall Dorset led 6-2 on points and 54-49 on shots.

The points were split in the second session with the Cornwall triple of Graham Luke, Lin Stephens & Brian Wakeley claiming at 13-6 win and the four of Elise Daniell, Peter Sully, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore winning 13-4. Similar scores in the other two games saw the session tied 4 points and 26 shots apiece. At the halfway point Dorset retained the lead at 10-6 and 90-85.

Session three again saw the points split evenly with David Studden claiming a 21-9 win in the singles and Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp winning 16-10 in the pairs. Studden’s large win also allowed Cornwall to collect the two additional points for the most shots in the discipline. With a session to play the score was now at Dorset 16 points 136 shots Cornwall 12 points 136 shots.

The final session was closely contested with the points again shared and the shots equal. Cornwall’s wins recorded by triple of Joe Coups, Frances Walther & Chris Roberts 12-5 and the four of Roy Christophers, Sheila Flower, Brenda Sleep & Graham Ford who claimed a 12-11 win on the last wood of the game. Overall the final score read Dorset 22 points 181 shots Cornwall 18 points 181 shots.

Cornwall were dominant in the A Team match right from the first session establishing a 6-2 points and 61-39 shots lead thanks to wins for Peter Spargo 12-7 and Graham Reeves 2606 in the singles and Kath Goodman and Joyce Ward 15-10 in the pairs.

Cornwall further extended the lead in the second session with wins for Tony Jago, Margaret Turner & Pam Williams 13-9 in the triples and the fours of Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks 6-12 and Jean Roper, Tom Rigler, Jim Rule & Norman Ward 5-6. At the halfway point Cornwall held 12-4 points and 97-71 shots lead.

Wins for both singles in the thirds session, Peter Spargo 16-8 and Graham Reeves 17-12 saw Cornwall claim a share of the points for the session and consolidate the strong position built up in the morning sessions, Dorset 10 points 120 shots Cornwall 18 points 153 shots.

The final session again saw the points shared with Cornwall claiming wins in both fours, Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks 17-9 and Jean Roper, Tom Rigler, Jim Rule & Norman Ward 8-6. The final score read Dorset 16 points 154 shots Cornwall 24 points 191 shots.

The next match for Cornwall will be against Somerset at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre on Sunday 2nd November.

COUNTY MIXED FOURS

On Saturday (17th October) the Dragon Leisure Centre hosted a highly competitive qualification competition for the County Mixed Pairs Championship. The entry of 18 teams were split into 4 groups, 3 of 4 and one of 6 with the winners progressing to the finals later in the season and runners up taking 2 county points.

Group One was decided on the last game of the day between two Liskeard teams with the rink of Sheila Hodge, Dorothy Woodyatt, Tony Baldwin & Peter Spargo coming out on top 12-8 to claim a place in the semi finals with John Turner, Betty Temple-Smith, Margaret Turner and Derek Newton finishing in second place and earning two county points.

Group Two went the way of the Holman’s team of Linda Higgins, Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (4 points +14 shots) on shot difference from the Ladock team of Rosemary Curnow, Patsy Wakeley, Arthur Piper & Chris Roberts (4 points +9 shots).

Group Three saw the Saltash team of Margaret Pollard, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner claim a clean sweep of wins (6 points +19 shots) for a second successive week to progress to the semi finals. The county points for second in group went to Kath Goodman (Treviscoe), Jim Watson (St Stephen) and Eric & Joan Boddy (Withiel) (4 points +11 shots).

The final group was also decided on the last game with Camilla & Chris Cawrse (Luxulyan) and Pam & Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) claiming a narrow 7-5 win to win the group (5 points +12 shots) with the St Newlyn East team of Sheila Collins, Ted Buscombe, Pam Williams & Graham Ford (4 points +13 points)

INTER AREA LEAGUE

This Sunday (25th October) the first of the Inter Area League fixtures will take place at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with the East v West and Central v North.

The fixtures brings together teams of 20 bowlers playing to a format to the Inter County Championship.

Cornwall Sports Partnership have the following courses/workshops running next week.

Funding Workship - Mon 20th Oct 6.30 – 9pm at the CSP office in Truro at a cost of £10 p/person. The workshop has been designed to produce advice and support to sports clubs to help with accessing funding. As part of the evening clubs will be able to discuss their project with the tutor in a funding surgery.

COUNTY FOURS

On Saturday (11th October) 18 teams contested the qualification competition for the CCSMBA County Fours Championship at the Dragon Leisure Centre at Bodmin.

The entrants were split into four groups for a round robin competition with the four group winners earning places in the semi finals to be played at the end of the season and the group runners up earning 2 County Points.

From Group 1 the Saltash team of Margaret Goodwin, Margaret Pollard, Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner claimed a clean sweep of wins (6 points +14 shots) to claim a Semi Final place with the Dobwalls team of Robert Rawlings, Bill Sharp, Jean Roper and Brenda Sleep (4 +6) taking second place in the group. Group 2 saw the Penlee team of Keith Williams, Geoff Lane, Nigel Jelbert and Malcolm Furneaux take a clean sweep (6 +13) to claim the group ahead of the Lostwithiel team of Pam Hamley, Betty Temple Smith, David Griffin and Peter Hamley (4 +15).

Group 3 went the way of the Liskeard team of Sheila Hodge, Tony Baldwin, Derek Newton and Peter Spargo also unbeaten through the day (6 +13) with the Troon team of Joe Coups, Una Prideaux, Linda Martin and Gerald Fisher (4 +13) second. Group 4 had the tightest outcome with the team of John & Marion Keers (St Agnes) and Joyce & Norman Ward (Withiel) coming out on top (4 +1) from Jordan Cook (Lerryn), Dave Abbiss, Robert Peareth and Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) (4 -2).

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

A busy weekend ahead for bowlers with the County Mixed Fours at the Dragon Centre on Saturday with 19 teams entered.

On Sunday the County Squad travel to Lytchett Minster near Poole to face Dorset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship. Cornwall currently hold third place in both the Premier and A team championships after one match for each county and will be keen to record strong results against the county currently lying at the bottom of both tables

The teams have not been announced at the time of writing.

Cornwall faced Devon at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin on Saturday (4th October) in the first fixture of the 2008/9 ESMBA Inter County Championship campaign.

Cornwall’s Premier Team started well claiming an advantage in the first of the four sessions with wins for both the Pairs, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (17-11) and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp (16-9) and a draw in the Singles for Nigel Nicholls (13-13) leaving the match score at Cornwall 5 points 59 shots Devon 3 points 47 shots. The second session saw Cornwall hold on to the overall advantage with wins for the Triples of Graham Luke, Lin Stephens & Brian Wakeley (11-5) and Margaret Jenkins, Frances Walther & Chris Roberts (13-5). Defeats for both Fours of 7-12 and 5-10 left the score at the half way point Cornwall 9 points 95 shots Devon 7 points 79 shots.

Devon regrouped after the lunch interval winning three out of four games in the third session, Cornwall’s only win being recorded by Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (13-12). With a session to play Devon had moved into the lead of the match with the score reading Cornwall 11 points 142 shots Devon 13 points 137 shots. The final session proved to be disaster for Cornwall losing all four games to leave the score at Cornwall 11 points 159 shots Devon 200 shots 21 points. With additional bonus points now added for the aggregate score in each discipline the final score read Cornwall 13 points 159 shots Devon 27 points 200 shots.

The first session of the A Team match saw Devon take an advantage they would not surrender for the day, Cornwall’s points in the session being recorded by the Singles players with a win for Graham Reeves (19-6) and a draw for Peter Spargo (11-11) with the score at Cornwall 3 points 49 shots Devon 5 points 49 shots. Just one win in the second session, recorded by the four of Anthony Jago, Thomas Rigler, Una Prideaux and Norman Ward (11-4) saw Devon further extend their lead at the halfway point. The score now reading Cornwall 5 points 72 shots Devon 11 points 85 shots.

The third session went the way of Cornwall with wins in both Singles for Peter Spargo (24-7) and Graham Reeves (14-9) and in the Pairs for Carolyn Matthews and Robert Flower (13-8) to close the score up to read Cornwall 11 points 134 shots Devon 13 points 127 shots with a session to play. The final session saw Devon wrap up the match win with three wins from the four games, Cornwall’s win recorded by the four of Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (11-7). The final score, with the bonus points added Cornwall 15 points 170 shots Devon 25 points 169 shots.

Cornwall’s next fixture will be in away to Dorset on 19th October.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s Inter County Championship campaign gets under way on Saturday with both the Premier and A teams in action against Devon at Bodmin’s Dragon Leisure Centre.

Each team consists of 20 players, 2 singles, 2 pairs, 2 triples and 2 fours who each play two games during the match. Places in the squad have been awarded following recent trials and squad practice days held at the Dragon Centre. Each game is worth 2 points and when combined with the bonus points makes a total of 40 available for each match. All points scored over the course of the six group games count towards the final position in the league table.

The match gets underway at around 11am and this will be the first time that Cornwall have played a match under the new competition format which see the Singles and Pairs playing in sessions 1 & 3 and Triples and Fours in sessions 2 & 4. In another revision to the rules for this season the 4 bonus points for most shots scored in the match are replaced by 2 points for the most shots in each of the four disciplines.

SUMMER LEAGUE

The Dobwalls team of Miriam Barbery, Bill Sharp, Jean Roper and Brenda Sleep are the 2008 CCSMBA Summer League Champions after defeating the Holmans (Camborne) based Hotshots team of Elise Daniell, Peter Sully (1st leg)/Dave Baxter (2nd leg), Nicholas Truscott and Peter Hore 50-23 over the two legs of the final played last week.

In the first leg, played at Holmans on Tuesday, the Hotshots started well claiming the first two ends. Scores of one and two in the next two ends saw Dobwalls take the lead before the home team levelled the score at 3-3 after five ends. A scores of three and one on the next two ends saw Dobwalls move into the lead before the home team again levelled the score at 7-7 after nine ends. A five for Dobwalls on the 10th end put them into a lead they would not relinquish, claiming an advantage on seven of the remaining ends. The final score being Hotshots 14 Dobwalls 20.

The second leg, played on Thursday at Dobwalls, saw the Hotshots start well opening up a 3-1 lead over the first four ends. A three on the fifth end followed up by scores on the next seven ends left Dobwalls 16-3 up after twelve ends. A change in playing order saw Hotshots momentarily disrupt the flow of Dobwalls scoring on the 13th ends claiming a four. Dobwalls scored on six of the remaining eight ends end the match with the score of Dobwalls 30 Hotshots 9.
