FOUR WOOD PAIRS

Over the weekend 60 pairs competed over the two days in the qualification competition for the County Four Wood Pairs at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club with 30 on each day split into a group stage with 1 group of 6 and 6 groups of 4 giving 7 group winners and one runner up to go forward to play a single knockout round.

Saturday's play saw Withiel's Henry Kendall & Tony Liddicoat unbeaten to win Group One with 6 points +31 shots.  Illogan's Richard Brown & David Studden were the weekends top performers scoring 6 +47 to win Group Two.  Group Three produced two qualifiers, Wadebridge's Margaret & John Menhenick as group winners with 6 +14 and Helston's Fran Phillips & David Hickey as the best runners up with 4 +11.  Saltash's Margaret Goodwin & Graham Reeves claimed Group Four win 6 +18.  Newlyn Trinity's Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls qualified from Group Five on 4 +8 despite winning only one game and drawing two.  Holman's Derek Elliott & Mark Eddy claimed Group Six with 5 +36.  Group Seven finished with three teams on 4 points with Penlee's Tom Lapworth & Howard McCormack progressing on +11 shots.

In the knock out round Margaret & John Menhenick defeated Richard Brown & David Studden 11-10.  Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls were 14-4 winners against Tom Lapworth & Howard McCormack.  Derek Elliott & Mark Eddy defeated Tony Liddicoat & Henry Kendall 9-4 and the final game was won by Margaret Goodwin & Graham Reeves defeating Fran Phillips & David Hickey 12-5.

On Sunday Group One was won by Penlee's Diane & Martin Williams on 6 +19.  Illogan's Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher claimed Group Two with 6 +12.  Group Three produced two qualifiers, Group Winners Camelford's Stewart Hambly & Wadebridge's Derek Swaby on 5 +21 and best runners up David Topliffe & Alan Rathbone (St Minver).  Group Four went the way of Dobwall's Brenda Sleep & Max Burden with 5 +6.  From Group Five Withiel's Joe Dixon & Blisland's Keith Matthews were easily the days top scorers with 6 +35.  Group Six which contained both of last years finalists was won by Ladock's Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts with 5 +28. Landrake's Des Pengelly & Alan Holden were unbeaten with 6 +24 to take Group Seven.

The knock out round saw Joe Dixon & Keith Matthews need an extra end to defeat Brenda Sleep & Max Burden 9-8.  Diane & Martin Williams were 14-3 winners against Stewart Hambly & Derek Swaby.  Des Pengelly & Alan Holden defeated Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 8-6 and Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts defeated David Topliffe & Alan Rathbone by the same scoreline.

MIXED FOURS FINALS & CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

On Sunday (4th February) the first County finals of the season will be played at Carnmoggas IBC

First up will be the County Mixed Fours with 8 teams playing a knockout competition starting at 0900.  The qualifiers are

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 20 JANUARY 2013

INTER AREA COMPETITION

On Sunday Carnmoggas IBC played host to the largest annual gathering of bowlers for a county competition when 132 bowlers competed in the Inter Area Match, with each of the four league areas being represented by 8 rinks.

The first session saw Central take an 8-0 advantage against North and West a 5-3 advantage over the East.  Session Two saw North and West draw 4-4 and Central extend their lead with a 6-2 advantage over East.  Session Three saw North and East share points 4 apiece whilst West clawed back to within a point of Central with a 6-2 session advantage.

Session 4 saw North and East again share points 4 apiece and Central reestablishing a 5 point lead over west with a 6-2 session advantage.  Session 5 saw East and Central share points and West taking all 8 off North to again return to within a point of leaders Central setting up a decisive final session.  Central claimed 7 out of 8 points against North whilst West crashed to a 1-7 deficit against East to leave Central retaining the title.

The competitive nature of this competition was highlighted with only four rinks unbeaten all day.  The top scoring rink was Joe Dixon (Withiel), Henry Matthews (Withiel), Henry Kendall (Withiel) and Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) with 6 points +20 shots for Central.  2nd best were Pauline Saben (Porthleven), Mike Richards (Penlee), Ann Perry (Porthleven) & Nigel Jelbert (Penlee) with 6 +18 for West.  The only other rink to record three wins were Meg Horrell, Marilyn Stewart, Arthur Hambley & Ken Horrell (Withiel) with 6 +9 for Central.  Elise Daniell (Holmans), Malcolm Nankervis (Centenary), Fred Spurr (Centenary) & Peter Hore (Withiel) with 5 +16 for West rounded off the list unbeaten teams.  Top scorers for East were Melba Kitt, Sue Ashton, Graham Reeves & Jim Ashton (Saltash) with 4 +21 and for North were Val Risdon, Margaret Shillaber, Ronald Shillaber & Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) with 4 +12.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday (13 January) Cornwall’s County Short Mat teams travelled to the City of Birmingham Indoor Bowls Club for the Preliminary round of the knockout stages of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

 

The Premier Team, starting their defence of the Consolation Championship title faced North Yorkshire who joined the championship this year having previously competed only in the Northern championship.

 

The points were shared in the first session with both counties claiming a win apiece in the Singles and Pairs.  For Cornwall Nigel Nicholls defeated Ben Render, one half of the current World Champion Pairs combination, by 20 shots to 7 in the Singles and in the Pairs Richard Brown & Percy Tripp won 13-7.  Points were again shared in the second session with Graham Ford, Max Burden & Brian Wakeley winning 12-4 in the Triples and Sheila Hodge, Pam Williams, Gillian Cawrse & Peter Hore winning 11-8 in the Fours.  At the half way stage in the match the points were shared 8 apiece with Cornwall holding the shots advantage in three of the four disciplines.

 

The third session saw North Yorkshire take an advantage on game points with Cornwall taking 3 of the eight on offer.  David Studden completed a double over Ben Render in the Singles with a 16-10 win to also secure the bonus points for Cornwall.  In the Pairs a 12-12 draw for Graham Reeves & Bill Sharp saw the bonus points shared leaving the match score at 14-14 going into the last session. 

 

During the final session the match looked to be slipping away from Cornwall with both triples falling behind in their respective games.  Brian Wakeley’s Triple however fought back from a deficit of 1-11 culminating in a score of 5 on the last end to win 13-11. North Yorkshire won the other Triples game in turn securing the bonus points.  In the Fours Peter Hore’s rink were comfortable 14-2 winners ensuring the bonus points were comfortably Cornwall’s leaving the match outcome dependant on the last match to finish.  Elise Daniell, Derek Elliott, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher duly delivered for Cornwall with a 9-6 win to secure the match win.  The final score being Cornwall 22 points 176 shots North Yorkshire 18 points 159 shots.

The A Team, who have progressed to the Main Championship this year after winning the Consolation Championship last year, faced Herefordshire who claimed the title in 2004.

 

The first session saw points shared with Cornwall claiming wins courtesy of Martin Boraston 19-7 in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Brenda Sleep 13-10 in the Pairs.  Points were again shared in the second session with both Cornwall Fours winning comfortably.  Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray and Peter Hamley 13-2 and Joe Dixon, Barbara James, Dennis Shorthouse & Derek Newton 15-4.  At the halfway stage the score read Cornwall 8 points 88 shots Herefordshire 8 points 78 shots.

 

The third session saw Herefordshire claim an advantage in games won with Cornwall securing just 3 points, Martin Boraston comfortably completing a double in the Singles with a 22-7 win and Betty Temple-Smith and Brenda Sleep drawing 13-13 in the Pairs.  Cornwall claimed the Singles and Pairs bonus points to lead by 2 points, 15-13 going into the last session of Triples and Fours.  Cornwall claimed a clean sweep of wins in the final session to secure the match win.  In the Triples Lynn Davey, Gary Davey & Keith Matthews 10-6 and Tony Jago, Posy Widger & Henry Kendall 10-9.  In the Fours Peter Hamley won 15-4 and Derek Newton 12-10.  The final match score Cornwall 25 points 193 shots Herefordshire 15 points 154 shots.

 

In the Quarter finals the Premier Team will face Worcestershire and the A Team Surrey with the date and venue to be confirmed.

 

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

Cornwall’s place allocations for the National Championships have been confirmed with 1 place in the Singles, Pairs, Triples and Mixed Fours and 2 in the Fours.

13 January 2013

On Sunday Cornwall's Inter County teams travelled to Birmingham for the Preliminary round of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

The Premier Team, defending the Consolation title won last season, came through a tough match against North Yorkshire winning 22-18.

The A Team, who are competing the Main championship after winning the Consolation last year claimed victory against Herefordshire 25-15 after a dominate final session.

Both teams are next expected to be in action over the weekend of 23rd and 24th February when the Premier team face Worcestershire and the A team will be against Surrey.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday 13 January, Cornwall’s Inter County teams face a long trip to Birmingham for the Preliminary Round of the knockout stages of the championships.

 

The Premier Team, who are defending Consolation championship holders, face newcomers North Yorkshire who have a number of players with England team experience in there squad.  The A Team, who have progressed into the Main championship having won the Consolation last season, face Herefordshire who had a mixed run in the group stages winning two and losing two games.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

 

The Inter Area League came to a conclusion on Sunday 6 January at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club with the West area claiming the title with a 21 points to 19 and 173 to 172 shots win against the Central area to claim the title by three points.  The East defeated the North by 24 points to 16 and 196 shots to 150.  East claimed third overall 11 points off the top spot.
