COUNTY SINGLES

 

Over the weekend 48 bowlers from an original entry of 62 competed at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin for the eight places available in the County Finals to be played in January.

 

On Saturday 23 bowlers competed in 5 groups to find 8 bowlers to compete in a single round of knockout games.

 

Gerald Fisher (Illogan) claimed Group One with an unbeaten 6 points +17 shots including a 12-7 win over defending champion Tony Baldwin (Liskeard).  David Studden (Illogan) was also unbeaten in claiming Group Two with 6 +21.  Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) was a 11-6 winner against Graham Reeves (Saltash) in the deciding game of Group Three to finish on 6 +14.  John Keers (St Agnes) recorded a 19-4 win over Michael Webster (Blisland) in Group Four to finish on 6 +20.  Bob Williams (Illogan) claimed Group Five with 6 +10 after defeating Jim Ashton (Saltash) 11-4 in the groups final game.  Jim Ashton qualified as highest runner up with 4 +17.  John Sloane (Liskeard) took the second spot with 4 +12 in Group One and the final spot went to Graham Reeves with 4 -2 from Group Three.

 

The play-off round to determine the four qualifiers for Saturday saw Jim Ashton defeat John Sloane 11-9.  Brenda Sleep claimed a 9-8 victory over Gerald Fisher.  David Studden claimed the all Illogan match defeating club mate Bob Williams 12-3 and John Keers claimed the final spot with a 10-6 win over Graham Reeves.

 

Sunday saw 25 bowlers competed in 6 groups again to find 8 bowlers to compete in a single round of knockout games.

 

Peter Hore (Holmans) took Group One honours defeating previously unbeaten Martin Boraston (Liskeard) 10-6 in the final game of the group to finish on 6 +29, the highest score of the weekend.  Keith Matthews (Blisland) recorded three wins in Group Two to finish on 6 +11.  Three bowlers finished on 4 points in Group Three with Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) taking the group win with +14 shots.  Carol Ford (St Newlyn East) finished with +8 and Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) with +4.  Peter Skinner (Saltash) won the final game of Group Four against Chris Roberts 8-6 to finish with 6 +11.  Peter Spargo (Liskeard) claimed Group Five with a 20 shot win over previously unbeaten Karen Watson (Holmans) in the final game to finish on 6 +26.   Group Six went the way to Len Coxall (Newlyn Trinity) with a unbeaten 6 +23.  Ken Horrell (Withiel) claimed the first of the runners up spots with 4 +20 in Group Two with the second spot going to Martin Boraston with 4 +18 in Group One.

 

The play-off round saw Peter Hore defeat Len Coxall 13-7 in a close game through the first two thirds.  Keith Matthews edged out Peter Skinner 9-7.  Ken Horrell claimed a close game against Bill Sharp 12-10. The final game saw Peter Spargo claim the all Liskeard match against Martin Boraston 12-3.  The finals will be played back at the Dragon Centre on Saturday 22 January 2010.

 

Inter County Championship

 

Devon travelled to Somerset on Sunday and recorded wins in both the Premier (27-13) and A (26-14) Team matches.  Cornwall are now within touching distance of third place in the Premier Team competition and hold onto top spot in the A Team competition with Somerset the nearest challengers 11 points behind.  Cornwall face Somerset at home on Sunday 9th January, Dorset will host Devon on the same day.

ESMBA Inter County Championship

Cornwall hosted Dorset at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin on Sunday in the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship matches. Cornwall’s Premier Team went into the game firmly stuck to the bottom of the South West area table having not won an match so far this season whilst the A Team looked to consolidate their position at the top of the table after Somerset’s 26-14 loss away to Devon on Saturday.

Cornwall took a 5-3 advantage in the first session of the Premier Team match with a wins for Nigel Nicholls in the Singles 14-13 and Karen Watson & David Studden 11-10 in the Pairs. Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp earned an 11-11 draw in the second pairs game. Dorset struck back in the second session taking three wins out of four to lead at the half way point. Cornwall’s only points of the session recorded by Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams who fought back from a 1-6 deficit to win 11-9 in the Triples.

Cornwall re-took the lead in the third session thanks to wins for Nigel Nicholls 17-9 in the Singles, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 16-15 and Karen Watson & David Studden 14-6 in the Pairs. Cornwall also claimed the bonus points in both disciplines to lead 17-11 going into the final session. Cornwall took maximum points from the final session. In the Triples of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams won 11-9 and Henry Kendall, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley claimed victory 16-7. In the Fours Carolyn Stanley, Carol Ford, Pam Williams & Graham Ford were 12-3 winners whilst Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Ronald Thomas & Chris Roberts took an last end decider to win 7-6. Cornwall also secured the bonus points in both disciplines to finish with a score of Cornwall 29 points 182 shots Dorset 11 points 163 shots.

The A Team started with a shared first session thanks to a 25-4 for Peter Spargo in the Singles and an 18-9 advantage for Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep in the Pairs. Cornwall took a lead in the match with three wins in the second session, the most impressive coming from the Four of Kath Goodman, Jim Rule, Derek Swaby and David Griffin who led their opponents 17-0 after five ends and going onto win 21-5. Tony Jago, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher were 11-3 winners in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves & Derek Newton 8-4 winners in the Fours. At the halfway point the score read Cornwall 10 Dorset 6.

The third session was again shared with Tony Baldwin winning 21-5 in the Singles and draws for Peter Spargo in the second Singles 12-12 and Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep 12-12 in the Pairs. Dorset were not yet done though and claimed three win in the final session, Cornwall points coming from Kath Goodman, Jim Rule, Derek Swaby and David Griffin winning 8-5. Cornwall claimed the bonus points from Singles and Fours with Dorset taking the Pairs and Triples to leave the final score at Cornwall 20 points 192 shots Dorset 20 points 156 shots.

Cornwall face the last match of the South West group stages on Sunday 9th January when Somerset will visit the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

County Two Wood Singles

On Saturday 35 bowlers contested the County Two Wood Singles qualification competition at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with play split into two sessions.

17 bowlers contested the morning session over four groups with the winners progressing to Finals Day. Mark Albon (Luxulyan) finished with 4 points +7 shots to claim Group One edging out John Keers (St Agnes) by a single shot. Graham Reeves claimed Group Two with an unbeaten 6 +21. Karen Watson (Holmans) recorded the day’s best score of 6 +37 to claim Group Three. Rounding off the qualifiers from the morning was Martin Boraston (Liskeard) with 6 +24 from Group Four.

18 bowlers contested the afternoon session again over four groups. Peter Hore (Holmans) claimed Group One with 6 +21. Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) defeated Graham Ford 12-7 in the final game of Group Two to finish on 5 +9. Norman Ward needed a 12-9 win over Brenda Sleep in the final game of Group Three to confirm qualification with 5 +5. Carol Ford and Nigel Nicholls played out a 9-9 draw in the final game of Group Four to leave Carol on 5 +19 edging out Nigel by one shot.

COUNTY TRIPLES

 

The County Triples qualification competition fell victim to the wintery conditions over the weekend with play only possible on Sunday after overnight snowfall prevented travel on Saturday Morning for many players and officials.

 

Sunday’s play featured 16 teams who braved the cold conditions at the Dragon Leisure Centre to compete for four of the eight places available at the County Finals to be played in January.

 

Margaret Jenkin (Newlyn Trinity), John Thomas (Penzance) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) claimed Group One after defeating the Liskeard team of Lynne Davey, Martin Boraston and Gary Davey 9-7 in the final game in the group to finish unbeaten with 6 points +21 shots.  Kath Goodman (Treviscoe) combined with St Newlyn East’s Carol & Graham Ford to claim Group Two unbeaten with 6 +22.  Group Three went down to a final game decider with Illogan’s Bob Williams, Joe Coups & David Studden defeating Holman’s Nicholas Truscott, Karen Watson & Peter Hore 12-5 to finish on 6 +23.  The final game of Group Four went the way of Luxulyan’s David Giles, Betty Temple-Smith & Phil Hicks who defeated nearest challengers St Newlyn East’s Sheila Collins, Margaret Walke & Pam Williams 11-9 to finish on 6 +15.

 

A restaging date for Saturday’s cancelled competition has yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.

 

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

 

On Saturday the County Two Wood Singles qualification competition will be contested at the Dragon Centre with two sessions of play spanning morning and afternoon with 44 bowlers entered.

 

On Sunday the County Teams are in action with Dorset the visitors to the Dragon Leisure Centre.  In a bid to earn a first win of the season for the Premier Team, Team Manager Chris Cawrse has shuffled the team with many bowlers featuring in different disciples than they have been used to so far this season.  The A Team will be looking for a strong result in their bid to finish top of the South West Area of the A Team Competition.

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 21st November 2010

 

BRITISH ISLES CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Whilst local bowlers took a break from competitive action over the weekend, Holmans club member Karen Watson travelled to the Isle of Man to take her place in the England team at the British Isles Championship.  The format involved teams from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Isle of Man, playing in both Individual Championships for Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours and a Team Championship involving 16 players per team playing in 4 rinks, the cumulative scores from each match determining the final result.

 

Playing in the team competition Karen was teamed with Stephen Burrows (Cheshire), Jason McLean (Hampshire) and Craig Burgess (Essex).  Their first game saw Scotland claim an 8-7 win but England won 53-27 overall.  Next up were the Isle of Man with England claiming a comfortable 73-14 margin with Karen’s team winning 14-2.  Wales were the opponents in the third round of games with England again coming out on top 35-27 although Karen’s team lost 9-7.

 

England went into the final session against Ireland knowing the an overall win would secure the championship.  In a close session Ireland lead by three shots with an end to play and extended the lead to five to claim the win 36-31 and the Team Championship,  Karen’s team losing 9-5.  England finished in 2nd overall.

 

England claimed to titles in the Individual championships.  Devon’s Lee Toleman & Michael Ivings taking the Pairs and Shropshire’s Warwick France, Allan Williams, Chris Shakeshaft & Chris Williams claimed the Fours.  Ireland claimed the Singles, England’s Trevor Brown (Oxfordshire) finishing third and the Triples with England’s Dave Hayward (Warwickshire), Martin Walker (Cheshire), John Pitcher (Warwickshire) in second place.

Next weekend attention returns to local matters with the County Triples at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with 39 teams split over the two days competing for one of the eight places available in the county finals in January.

ESMBA INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday (14 November) Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort, Bere Regis for the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship fixture against Dorset.

 

Cornwall’s Premier Team suffered a heavy defeat with the final score reading Dorset 29 points 206 shots Cornwall 11 points 136 shots.  Dorset completed a clean sweep of wins in the first session of Singles and Pairs.  The second session saw Cornwall take a shared session thanks to wins for Joe Coups, Ken Horrell and Brian Wakeley in the triples 9-8 and Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Ronnie Thomas & Chris Roberts 9-7. 

 

In the third session Michael Widger & Kevin Williams claimed an 11-10 win in the Pairs but with Dorset winning the other three games in the session and securing the shots bonus points in the Singles and Pairs the match was out of reach for Cornwall.  The final session saw Dorset consolidate a well earned match victory with a 5-3 session advantage.  Cornwall’s points recorded in the Fours by Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Karen Watson & Peter Hore with a 10-6 win and Chris Robert’s team earning a hard earned 7-7 draw to ensure that Cornwall also claimed the Fours bonus points.

The A Team started slowly claiming a single win from the four games in the first session, Peter Spargo winning 16-11 in the Singles.  The second session saw Cornwall claim all four games.  In the Triples Luke Jolly, Bill Sharp & Brenda Sleep 15-7 and Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 8-4.  In the Fours Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Derek Swaby & David Griffin 14-4 and Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Miriam Barbery & Max Burden 7-5.  At the halfway point Cornwall led by 10 points 84 shots to Dorset’s 6 points 78 shots.

 

The third session saw the points shared with Cornwall claiming both Singles games and the bonus points, Peter Spargo 17-9 and Tony Baldwin 23-5.  The final session saw the game points on offer shared with two wins apiece, Gerald Fisher’s Triple winning 10-8 and David Griffin’s Four 13-3.  Cornwall also secured the bonus points for both Triples and Fours to leave the final score reading Dorset 16 points 163 shots Cornwall 24 points 167 shots.

COUNTY MIXED FOURS

 

On Saturday 23 teams contested the qualification competition for the County Mixed Fours at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.  Split into 5 groups, the group winners and three best runners up would qualify for the finals to be played later in the season.

 

A tough days play saw only one team progress unbeaten, Lostwithiel’s Pam Hamley, Marilyn Stewart, Jim Rule and Terry Bray with 5 points +20 to win Group One.  The Wadebridge team of Margaret Menhinick, Barbara Swaby, Derek Swaby & John Menhinick took Group Two with 4 +10.  Group Three went the way of Liskeard’s Sheila Hodge, Edna Cope, Peter Spargo & Tony Baldwin with 4 +6.  Group Five went the way of Dobwall’s Miriam Barbery, Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden with 4 +9.  The final group winners spot went to Withiel’s  Joan Boddy, Eric Boddy, Margaret Horrell and Ken Horrel with 4 +11. 

 

The Runner’s Up spots went to Kath Goodman (Treviscoe), Joyce Ward (Withiel), Michael Widger & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) with 4 +16.  St Agnes’s John & Marion Keers and Vera & Brian Blackwell took the second spot with 4 +7 and Newlyn Trinity’s Christine & Len Coxall, Margaret Jenkin and Nigel Nicholls took the final spot with 4 +2.

 

BRITISH ISLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

 

There is a break in local action this weekend as the British Isles Championships in the Isle of Man take centre stage.  Cornwall will be represented in the team for the first time in nearly 20 years with Karen Watson from the Holmans club named in the team of 16 for the Rinks competition.  Karen, a regular member of the Cornwall Premier Team, was first selected for England at Under 18’s level in 2003 has moved into the senior squad for the first time this season.

NEWS RELEASE – 7th November 2010

 

ESMBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS

 

On Saturday (6 November) the local entrants for the ESMBA National Championships converged on Withiel Village Hall to contest the local qualification competitions.

 

First up was the Triples with four teams competing.  The first round of games saw Henry Kendall, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden defeat Meg Horrell, Joyce Ward & Ken Horrell 8-2 and Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore claim a 10-5 win against Roy Christophers, Kevin Williams & Ronald Thomas.  The second round of games saw Ronald Thomas’s team 8-7 winners against Max Burden and Ken Horrell claimed an 8-4 win against Peter Hore to leave all four teams on two points.  The final round of games saw Peter Hore take a 9-4 win against Max Burden to top the table with 4 points +1 shots and claim the place at the National Championships.  Ronald Thomas took an 8-5 win against to claim second place with 4 -4. 

 

Nine teams competed in the Pairs which saw the entrants split into three groups of three for the initial stages.  Kevin Williams & Ronald Thomas claimed a close group one with 3 points +1 shots ahead of Brenda Sleep & Max Burden with 2 points 0 shots after recording two draws and Joyce Ward & Ken Horrell with 1 -1.  Karen Watson & David Studden took Group Two honours with 4 +24.  Henry Kendall &Tony Liddicoat took second with 2 -10 ahead of Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore with 0 -14.  Jim & Carolyn Stanley scored 4 +11 to win Group three ahead of Meg Horrell & Joe Dixon  with 2-7 and Nicholas Truscott & Elise Daniell on 0 -4.

 

In the Semi Finals Kevin Williams & Ronald Thomas took an 11-9 win against Brenda Sleep & Max Burden to set up a final against Karen Watson & David Studden who came from behind to defeat Jim & Carolyn Stanley.  Karen & David claimed the place at the National Championships with an 8-2 win over Kevin & Ronald with an end to spare.

 

The afternoon session started with the Fours with four teams competing.  Meg Horrell, Henry Kendall, Joyce Ward & Ken Horrell started with a 6-4 win over Karen Watson, David Studden, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Kevin Williams & Ronald Thomas claimed a 9-2 over Roy Christophers, Christine Coxall, Len Coxall & Mark Payne.  In the second round of games Ken Horrell’s Rink were comfortable 14-3 winners over Mark Payne’s team with Peter Hore’s team taking a 10-8 win against Ronald Thomas’s team after facing a potential match losing lie of 7 shots against on the final end.  The final round of games saw Ronald Thomas’s rink claim a 7-3 win against the previously unbeaten team led by Ken Horrell to leave both teams on 4 points +9 shots.  The slower pace of the game played between Peter Hore and Mark Payne allowed Peter to monitor the overall shots position on route to claiming a 12-2 win to finish on 4 points +10 shots to claim the Nationals place.

 

The final competition of the day was the singles with 8 players competing.  After a group stage the four bowlers progressing to the semi finals were Nigel Nicholls, Karen Watson, Ronald Thomas & Carolyn Stanley.  Karen claimed the first final spot defeating Carolyn with Ronald claiming the other by defeating Nigel, Karen went on to claim the place at the Nationals defeating Ronald in the Final.

 

INTER AREA LEAGUE

 

On Sunday attention turned to the Inter Area League at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with West up against North and Central facing East.

 

West claimed victory over the North with all strong scoring in the Singles, Triples and Fours, the Pairs proving the only strong discipline for the North claiming 8 of the teams 12 points.  The final score being West 28 points 191 shots North 12 points 146 shots.

 

Central and East contested a much closer match with each session being shared 4 points apiece, Central claiming bonus points for shots in the Singles and Triples and East in the Pairs and Fours to leave the final score at Central 20 points 183 shots East 20 points 158 shots.

 

With one round of games left the table reads, West 54 pts, Central 51 pts, Eats 34 pts, North 21 pts.

Another busy weekend ahead with the County Mixed Fours on Saturday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with 23 teams entered.  On Sunday the County Squad travel to Dorset for the latest match in the South West group of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  The selected teams were not available at the time of writing.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall enjoyed mixed fortunes in their latest ESMBA Inter County Championship match against Devon on Sunday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

In the A Team match Cornwall started with a shared first session with wins for both Singles, Peter Spargo 18-9 and Tony Baldwin 17-10. The second session saw Cornwall move into the lead of the match thanks to wins in the Triples for Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 10-8 and Fours for Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Derek Swaby & David Griffin 9-4. The second Four of Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton recorded an 11-11 draw to leave the score at the halfway point Cornwall 9 points 110 shots Devon 7 points 87 shots.

Cornwall’s Singles and Pairs were unbeaten in the third session to further enhance their lead in the match. In the Singles Peter Spargo won 16-11 and Tony Baldwin drew 10-10 to also secure the bonus points for most shots. In the Pairs Joyce Ward & Carolyn Stanley recorded a 14-8 win and Jimmy Rule & Terry Bray drew 13-13, Devon however secured to shots bonus points to leave the match score reading Cornwall 15 points 163 shots Devon 9 points 129 shots. The first three cards returned in the final session showed Cornwall wins to ensure that the match win was secured. In the Triples Luke Jolly, Max Burden & Brenda Sleep 15-7 and Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 10-6 also ensuring the shots bonus points. In the fours Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Derek Swaby & David Griffin recorded a 13-0 whitewash of their opponents. The closest game of the final session saw Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton claim a single shot on the final end to win 12-11. Cornwall comfortable secured the Fours bonus points to leave the final score Cornwall 29 points 213 shots Devon 11 points 153 shots. The result leaves Cornwall 2nd in the South West group 5 points behind Somerset who were 24-16 winners at home to Dorset on Sunday.

The Premier team however had a day to forget recording just 2 game wins out of the 16 played against a Devon team peppered with current and former England Internationals with three world championships between them.

Cornwall’s points coming from the Four of Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Ronnie Thomas & Chris Roberts recording a 7-6 win in the morning session and the Triple of Joe Coups, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley taking a dominant 24-5 win, including two ends with maximum 6 scores, in the afternoon. The margin of victory also securing the shots bonus points in the Triples. The final match score reading Cornwall 6 points 130 shots Devon 24 points 211 shots, Cornwall’s worst result at home for many years and leaves the county firmly routed to the bottom of the South West group 20 points behind Somerset who lost 19-21 at home to Dorset on Sunday.

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS

Next weekend attention turns to the ESMBA National Championships with the local qualifiers taking place for Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours and Withiel Village Hall on Saturday (6 November). Sufficient entries have been received to ensure that Cornwall will be represented in all disciplines at next April’s championships. Play gets under way on Saturday at 8.30 am and expected to run through to early evening. Keen to make it through to the championships will be Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore who will be looking to improve on their appearance in the Quarter finals at the 2010 championships.
