INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall enjoyed mixed fortunes in their latest ESMBA Inter County Championship match against Devon on Sunday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

In the A Team match Cornwall started with a shared first session with wins for both Singles, Peter Spargo 18-9 and Tony Baldwin 17-10. The second session saw Cornwall move into the lead of the match thanks to wins in the Triples for Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 10-8 and Fours for Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Derek Swaby & David Griffin 9-4. The second Four of Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton recorded an 11-11 draw to leave the score at the halfway point Cornwall 9 points 110 shots Devon 7 points 87 shots.

Cornwall’s Singles and Pairs were unbeaten in the third session to further enhance their lead in the match. In the Singles Peter Spargo won 16-11 and Tony Baldwin drew 10-10 to also secure the bonus points for most shots. In the Pairs Joyce Ward & Carolyn Stanley recorded a 14-8 win and Jimmy Rule & Terry Bray drew 13-13, Devon however secured to shots bonus points to leave the match score reading Cornwall 15 points 163 shots Devon 9 points 129 shots. The first three cards returned in the final session showed Cornwall wins to ensure that the match win was secured. In the Triples Luke Jolly, Max Burden & Brenda Sleep 15-7 and Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 10-6 also ensuring the shots bonus points. In the fours Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Derek Swaby & David Griffin recorded a 13-0 whitewash of their opponents. The closest game of the final session saw Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton claim a single shot on the final end to win 12-11. Cornwall comfortable secured the Fours bonus points to leave the final score Cornwall 29 points 213 shots Devon 11 points 153 shots. The result leaves Cornwall 2nd in the South West group 5 points behind Somerset who were 24-16 winners at home to Dorset on Sunday.

The Premier team however had a day to forget recording just 2 game wins out of the 16 played against a Devon team peppered with current and former England Internationals with three world championships between them.

Cornwall’s points coming from the Four of Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Ronnie Thomas & Chris Roberts recording a 7-6 win in the morning session and the Triple of Joe Coups, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley taking a dominant 24-5 win, including two ends with maximum 6 scores, in the afternoon. The margin of victory also securing the shots bonus points in the Triples. The final match score reading Cornwall 6 points 130 shots Devon 24 points 211 shots, Cornwall’s worst result at home for many years and leaves the county firmly routed to the bottom of the South West group 20 points behind Somerset who lost 19-21 at home to Dorset on Sunday.

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS

Next weekend attention turns to the ESMBA National Championships with the local qualifiers taking place for Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours and Withiel Village Hall on Saturday (6 November). Sufficient entries have been received to ensure that Cornwall will be represented in all disciplines at next April’s championships. Play gets under way on Saturday at 8.30 am and expected to run through to early evening. Keen to make it through to the championships will be Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore who will be looking to improve on their appearance in the Quarter finals at the 2010 championships.

COUNTY PAIRS

 

The qualification competition for the County Pairs was played over the weekend at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with 47 pairings taking part chasing the 8 places available in the County Finals in January.

 

Saturday saw 25 pairings split into 6 groups for a round robin competition followed by a single knock out round to determine 4 qualifiers from the day.

 

Group One was a closely contested affair with all four pairs playing in the final round of games being in with a chance of taking the group win.  Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Henry Kendall & Joe Dixon (Withiel) 17-2 to secure the group win with 4 points +19 shots to finish ahead of Joan & Peter Skinner (Saltash) who defeated Susan Wilce & Barbara Swaby (Wadebridge) 15-7 to finish on 4 +10 narrowly missing out on a best runners up place.  Kevin Williams & Mike Widger (Porthleven) were undefeated in claiming Group Two with 6 +38, the best qualifying score of the two days.  Derek Swaby (Wadebridge) & Stuart Hambly (Camelford) were also undefeated in claiming Group Three with 6 +16.

 

Group Four went down to the final game with Roy Christophers (Helston) & Keith Williams (Penlee) claiming 10-8 win against Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) to finish with 6 +16.  Luke and Wakeley qualified as highest runners up with 4 +17.  Group Five also went down to the final game with Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher (Illogan) taking an 11-5 win against Elise Daniell & Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) to finish on 5 +11.  Daniell & Truscott’s 4 +14 was enough to see them through as the second runner up.  Group Six proved the closed of the day with Joe Coups & David Studden (Illogan) finishing in top spot with a 9-8 win against Max Burden & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) in the final game to finish on 4 -2

 

A further round of knockout games was played to determine the four qualifiers.   Stuart Hambly & Derek Swaby needed an extra end to defeat Roy Christophers & Keith Williams 9-8.  An extra end was also needed by Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls in defeating Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley 10-8.  Kevin Williams & Mike Widger were comfortable 12-4 winners against Elise Daniell & Nicholas Truscott and Joe Coups & David Studden won the all Illogan game defeating Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher 13-2.

 

Sunday saw 22 pairings split into 5 groups, again with 4 qualifiers needed to go forward to the finals.

 

Bill Sharp & Graham Sleep (Dobwalls) claimed Group One with 4 +15, Mollie Jones & John Sloane (Liskeard) also qualified as the best of the runners up with 4 +11.  Sheila Hodge & Derek Newton (Liskeard) defeated Margaret Delbridge & Christine Kent (Cubert) 14-4 in the final Group Two game to finish on 6 +27, the Cubert pairing just missing out on the final best runners up place.  Yvonne & David Griffin (Lostwithiel) were unbeaten in claiming Group Three with 6 +18, including a 12-11 win against defending champions Tony Baldwin & Peter Spargo (Liskeard). 

 

Thomas Rigler & Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) claimed Group Four with 5 +4.  Joyce & Norman Ward (Withiel) claimed a runners up spot after finishing on 4 +1 which included a  12-10 win against England squad members Karen Watson & Peter Hore (Holmans).  Brian Webb & Tony Jago (Treviscoe) topped Group Five with 4 +13 with Caroline Trubshaw & Brian Lewis (Duloe) claiming a runners up spot with 4 +3.

 

The knockout round saw Joyce & Norman Ward defeat Caroline Trubshaw & Brian Lewis 10-9.  Sheila Hodge & Derek Newton were comfortable 18-7 winners against Bill Sharp & Graham Sleep.  Yvonne & David Griffin claimed an 8-6 win over Tom Rigler & Alan Trubshaw, the final spot in the finals line up went to John Sloane & Mollie Jones who defeated Brian Webb & Tony Jago 10-5.

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday (31 October) Cornwall host Devon in the first home Inter County match of the season at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with the action getting under way at around 1100.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Saturday Cornwall travelled to Exeter to face Devon in the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship matches at the ISCA Centre.

 

Cornwall’s Premier Team started well claiming two wins and a draw in the first session.  Nigel Nicholls claiming a comprehensive 22-7 win in the Singles, David Studden drawing the other Singles 11-11 and Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 13-12 winners in the Pairs.  Devon hit back in the second session claiming three of the four games, Cornwall points recorded by the Triple of Joe Coups, Ken Horrell and Brian Wakeley.  At the halfway point the score read Devon 9 points 75 shots Cornwall 7 points 87 shots.

 

The second session of Singles and Pairs saw Cornwall fade out of contention as Devon claimed all four games to take a commanding 19-9 lead in the match, Cornwall having earned the bonus point for most shots in the Singles and Devon claiming the Pairs.  Devon again took a 6-2 session advantage in the final session to wrap up a comfortable victory, Cornwall’s points recorded by Brian Wakeley’s Triple with a 13-5 win which also ensured the Triples Bonus Points.  The final match score read Devon 27 points 182 shots Cornwall 13 points 155 shots.

Cornwall’s A Team were unbeaten in the first session of their match with wins in the Singles for Peter Spargo 13-11, Tony Baldwin 15-10 and in the Pairs Bill Sharp & Terry Bray 17-7.  Joyce Ward & Carolyn

Stanley drew the remaining game of the session 12-12 to see Cornwall hold a 7-1 lead.  Cornwall were again on top in the second session winning three out of four games.  Luke Jolly, Max Burden and Brenda Sleep winning 15-4 in the Triples.  In the fours Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Dave Griffin & Arthur Hambley were 13-4 winners whilst Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves and Derek Newton won 6-10.  At the halfway point Cornwall held a 13 points 99 shots to Devon’s 3 points 68 shots lead.

 

Devon hit back in the third session claiming three of the four games, Cornwall’s solitary win recorded by the ever reliable Peter Spargo with a 18-10 win in the Singles ensuring the bonus points.  Devon claimed the bonus points in the Pairs after recording a 22 shot advantage over the session.  The final session saw the points shared with two wins apiece.  Cornwall’s points scored by Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher with a 8-6 win in the Triples and in the Fours Derek Newton’s last bowl over turned a game losing lie of three against to pickup four shots and a 11-6 win ensuring the Fours bonus points.  The final match score read Devon 17 points 159 shots Cornwall 23 points 174 shots.

COUNTY FOURS QUALIFIER.

 

On Sunday (17 October) twenty four teams competed in the County Fours qualification competition at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.  The competition was played on a round robin basis with teams were split into six groups of four with each team playing three games with the six group winners and two best runners up qualifying for the finals.

 

Group One went the way of the Holmans team of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Karen Watson & Peter Hore who were unbeaten recording a draw and two wins to finish on 5 points and +14 shots.  Liskeard’s Sheila Hodge, Tony Baldwin, Derek Newton & Peter Spargo claimed three wins to take Group Two with 6 +10.  Group Three went the way of an unbeaten St Newlyn East team of Sheila Collins, Carol Ford, Pam Williams & Graham Ford with 6 +22.

 

Group Four went the way of Margaret Jenkin (Newlyn Trinity), Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity), John Thomas (Penzance) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) unbeaten with 6 +20.  Saltash’s Melba Kitt, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner claimed Group 5 with 6 +14.  The final group, Group 6, proved the closest on the day with two teams finishing tied on 4 +11.  The group win going to Lostwithiel’s Pam Hamley, Chris Cawrse, Gillian Cawrse and Peter Hamley who had defeated Illogan’s Joe Coups, Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher in there group game to qualify on count back.  Rounding off the qualifiers were Dobwalls’ Graham Sleep, Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden with 4 +15 and Lostwithiel’s Dave Abbis, Camilla Cawrse, Robert Peareth & Terry Bray with 4 +12.

 

The eight qualifying teams will contest the finals on Saturday 22 January 2011.

 

COUNTY PAIRS

 

59 teams are entered in the County Pairs qualification competition to be plated over two days at the Dragon Leisure Centre this weekend (23 & 24 October).

INTER AREA LEAGUE

 

On Sunday (10 October) the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin played host to the first of three rounds of Inter Area League matches.

 

EAST v WEST

 

The first match saw last year’s winners the West up against second place East.  The first session saw West claim both Singles games with Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) defeating Peter Spargo (Liskeard) 16-8 and Peter Hore (Holmans) taking a 21-6 win over Tony Baldwin (Liskeard).  The East claimed both Fours games with the Liskeard team of Sheila Hodge, Edna Cope, Martin Boraston & Derek Newton taking a 10-9 win against Ann Warren (Troon), Don Falck (Marazion), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) & John Thomas (Penzance) and the Dobwalls team of Graham Sleep, Barbara James, Miriam Barbery & Max Burden 8-7 winners against the Illogan team of Bob Williams, Joe Coups, Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher.

 

The second session saw the West take control in the match with three wins and a draw.  In the Pairs Roy Christophers (Helston) and Mike Widger (Porthleven) claimed a 16-12 win over the Dobwalls pairing of Bill Sharp & Brenda Sleep and Elise Daniell (Holmans) & David Studden (Illogan) were held 9-9 by Saltash’s Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner.  The West were dominant in the Triples with Peter Warren (Troon), Malcolm Furneaux (Penlee) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) 19-5 winners against the Landrake trio of Rachel Gribble, Dennis Shorthouse & Neil Gribble and Helston’s Fran Phillips, Robin Bray and David Hickey claiming a 14-5 advantage against Saltash’s Joan Skinner, James Simmons and Peter Skinner.  At the halfway point West held a 11 points and 111 shots to 5 points and 63 shots lead.

 

The third session saw a number of close games with Peter Hore just edging his Singles game against Peter Spargo 12-10 and Tony Baldwin defeating Nigel Nicholls 11-9.  In the Fours  Max Burden’s rink were 9-5 winners against John Thomas with Derek Newton and Gerry Fisher respective rinks sharing the points in the other game.  The final session went the way of the West 6 points to 2 with Roy Christophers and Mike Widger 16-8 winners against Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner in the Pairs and in the Triples Kevin Williams securing a 23-6 win against Peter Skinner and David Hickey defeating Neil Gribble 9-5.  East claimed there points courtesy of Brenda Sleep and Bill Sharp who were 14-9 winners against Elise Daniell and David Studden in the second Pairs game. With the addition of the bonus points for most shots in each discipline the final score read West 26 points 204 shots East 14 points 136 points.

 

NORTH v CENTRAL

 

Last season’s bottom two, North and Central, met in the days other game.  Central opened up a lead they would not relinquish in the first session thanks to a 20-6 win in the Singles for Chris Roberts (Ladock) over Robert Flower (Tintagel) and wins in both Fours Games.  Meg Horrell (Withiel), Mark Albon (Luxulyan), Joe Dixon (Withiel) & Ken Horrell (Withiel) 11-4 winners against Trish Hodge (St Tudy), Val Smith (St Tudy),  Michael Webster (Blisland) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) and Kath Goodman (Treviscoe), David Giles (Luxulyan), John Worton (Ladock) & Ted Pentland (Luxulyan) taking a  7-4 victory against the all Wadebridge four of Nicholas & Diana Powell and Frank & Julie Bennett.

 

Session two was again almost all one way traffic in favour of the Central Area with North managing a solitary point earned in the Triples by Stratton’s Raymond Jennings, Sandra Parker & Gordon Croud with a 13-13 draw against Marilyn Stewart (Lostwithiel), Betty Temple Smith (Luxulyan) and Arthur Hambley (Lostwithiel).  Central claimed the other games by comfortable margins.  In the Triples St Newlyn East’s Jim Stanley, Pam Williams & Carolyn Stanley were 18-2 winners against Lanteglos’ Val Risdon, Madeline & Fernley Davey whilst in the Pairs Joyce & Norman Ward (Withiel) were 15-7 winners against Sheila Flower (Tintagel) & Marion Davis (Wadebridge) and Carol & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) 20-6 against Daphne Hambly & Irene Clement (Cameford).  Halfway through Central were comfortable 13 points 110 shots to 3 points 56 shots leaders in the match.

 

Session three again saw Central in control winning three of the four games.  David Griffin defeating Robert Flower 21-8 in the Singles, Ted Pentland’s rink 7-4 winners against Keith Matthews and Ken Horrell’s rink 10-4 winners against Julie Bennett.  The points were shared in the final session with in the Pairs Norman & Joyce Ward defeating Daphne Hambly & Irene Clement 17-4 and Sheila Flower & Marion Davis 11-10 winners against Carol & Graham Ford.  The Triples saw Val Risdon claim a 9-6  win against Arthur Hambly and Carolyn Stanley winning 18-8 against Geoff Croud.  With the addition of the bonus points shots added the final score read Central 31 points 209 shots North 9 points 121 shots.

 

 The next round of games will take place on Sunday 7 November at the same venue with West taking on North and Central against East.

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall travel to Exeter on Saturday (16 October) to face Devon in the second match of the ESMBA Inter County Championship season.  Cornwall will be looking to build on the solid start made away to Somerset a few weeks ago as they push for qualification for the end of season knock out competitions.  A few changes are made to the teams that faced Somerset.

COUNTY FOURS

 

On Sunday (17 October) 24 teams will participate in the County Fours qualification competition chasing the places available in the County Finals to be played in January.  Play gets under way at the Dragon Leisure Centre at 9.15.

 

ENGLAND

 

Karen Watson has been selected to represent England at the British Isle Championships on the Isle of Man in November.  More to follow on this in due course.

CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE - 3 October 2010

INTER AREA LEAGUE

The first competitive action of the new Short Mat Bowls season in the County takes place on Sunday with the first round of Inter Area League matches at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin. Last year’s top two West and East contest one fixture with North and Central contesting the other. The matches are played to the Inter County Championship format with 20 bowlers representing each area.
