Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 29 December 2017

Cornwall's Short Mat Bowlers will be straight back into competitive action on the first weekend of January with 18 teams taking part in the County Fours on Saturday 6th and the County Premier and A Teams travelling to Dorset on Sunday 7th for the final group match of the season.

Cornwall's Premier Team need a minimum of 11 points from the 40 available to take top spot in the group and hopefully avoid a preliminary round match in the knockout stages as they look to at least match last years acheivement of reaching the final.  26 points for Cornwall's A Team will see them overhaul Dorset for 3rd place.

The following weekend a number of local bowlers will be travelling to York to compete in the latest Short Mat Players Tour event, the British Open.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) goes into the tournament looking to build on his current 4th place in the Order of Merit and is drawn in Group 6 where he will face fellow local bowler Elise Daniell (Holmans) along with Angela Roberts (ENG), Mike Clancy (ENG), Jack Pye (ENG) & Gunnar Frantzen (DEN).  Karen Watson (Saltash) faces Armin Stoll (CAN), Jimmy Broatch (SCO), Amir Javid (UAE), Ed Sawbridge (ENG) & Dave Woods (ENG) in Group 9.  Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) faces Paul Cairnduff (NIR), Gary Stewart (SCO), Eva Nelson (SWE), Joel Hager (SWE) & Malcolm Sheen (ENG).

Peter Hore (Holmans) faces a tough draw in Group 15 where he faces Dom Reed (ENG), Chris Hopkins (ENG), Peter Roberts (ENG), Mike Jones (ENG) & Martin Grange (ENG).  Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) & Callum Beale (Withiel) are drawn to face each other in Group 16 where they are joined by Chris Coates (ENG), Tony Ealham (ENG), Bent Nielsen (DEN) & Steven Duncan (IoM).

The SMPT will provide a comprehensive results service throughout the event with game scores and links to players results available here.

Area Leagues
The area leagues have reached the half way stage with full results and tables available from at http://ccsmba.nicholastruscott.co.uk/content.php?pg=tabledisplay

In the West Area Newlynn Trinity Jowsters lead the way with a 10 point gap over Holmans who in turn have a further 10 point gap ahead of Porthleven Fisherfolk.  Withiel Oaks are 8 points ahead of Truro City Golds in the Central area with Ladock Chiefs and Ladock Braves a further 2 points behind.  Dobwalls lead the East Area by a point from Landrake and Saltash Whites.  Blisland lead the way in the North with a 5 point lead over Boscastle, Lanteglos Reds and Wadebridge A.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 17 December 2017

County Singles
Over the weekend 40 players competed for eight places in the finals of County Singles at Carnmoggas.  On both days 20 bowlers were drawn into 5 groups of 4 with the group winners and three best runners up going to a single knockout round on each day.

On Saturday the players making through the group stages were; Group One David Topliffe (Boscastle) 4 points +4 shots, Group Two Karen Watson (Saltash) 6 +22, Group Three Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) 6 +31 & Bob Banks (Boscastle) 4 +20, Group Four Kevin Williams (Porthleven) 4 +22 & David Balow (Marazion) 4 -9), Group Five Callum Beale (Withiel) 6 +35 & John Dodd (St Newlyn East) 4 +8.

In the knockout games Williams defeated Topliffe 11-5, Banks eased past Dodd 19-4.  Bealle defeated Balow 14-5 and Watson won 8-6 against Tripp.

On Sunday the players coming through the group stages were; Group One Graham Reeves (Saltash) 4 +10, Group Two John Worth (Dobwalls) 4 +5 & Elise Daniell (Holmans) 4 -1, Group Three Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) 6 +27 & Carolyn Stanley (St Newlyn East) 4 +5, Group Four Geoff Maunder (East Taphouse) 4 +9 & Howard McCormack (Penlee) 4 +2, Group Five Alan Holden (Landrake) 4 +4.

The knockouts saw Daniell defeat Reeves 11-2.  Maunder won 13-8 against Worth.  Stanley defeated Shorthouse 11-8 and Holden won 17-6 against McCormack.

Inter County Rinks
On the 10th December Cornwall's Premier Team travelled to Bristol to take part on the qualifier for the Inter County Rinks.  Wins against Devon & Dorset saw Cornwall through to the finals in January.  Somerset were the top county on the day winning all three games.


The next competitive action will be the County Fours at Carnmoggas on Saturday 6th January followed by the final Inter County group match against Dorset at the Dorset Bowls Resort the following day.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 3 December 2017

County Four Wood Pairs
Over the weekend 34 pairs competed for eight places in the finals of County Four Wood Pairs at Carnmoggas.  On Saturday the qualifiers were David Foulds & David Balow (Marazion) with 6 points +15 in Group One.  Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) had the weekends highest qualifying score with 6 +44 in Group Two.  Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) topped Group Three with 4 +11.  Sandra & John Worton (St Newlyn East) were Saturday's final qualifiers with 5 +8 in Group Four.

On Sunday Chris Selby & David Studden (Holmans) topped Group One with 6 +26.  Cynthia Storer & Chris Roberts (Ladock) led Group Two with 6 +17.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) had the days best score with 6 +43 in Group Three.  The final qualifiers were Mark Payne & Howard McCormack (Penlee) with 4 +12.  The eight qualifying pairings will return to Carnmoggas on Sat 3rd March to compete for the title.

Short Mat Players Tour
Over the weekend a small number of local bowlers travelled to Chelmsford to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Fours and Pairs Masters competitions.

Saturday's Fours saw Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) team up with Norwegian players Gunnar & Ferdinand Frantzen.  Having come through the group stages second in group they lost in the Last 16 6-15.

Callum Beale (Withiel) played with out of county bowlers P Roberts, D Sands and R Jeffery and topped there group won 11-7 in both the Last 16 and Quarter Final rounds before losing 6-11 in the Semi Finals. 

James Smith (Lostwithiel) played with Devon bowlers P Pomorey, G Main & E James coming through the group stages in second place.  Through the knockouts they won 6-4 in the Preliminary Round, 11-7 in the Last 16, 6-5 in the Quarter Finals and 11-6 in the Semi Finals.  There were defeated 7-9 in the Final by Welsh rink A Edwards, C Howell, G Edwards & D Howell.

Sunday's Pairs saw the same local bowlers in action.  Nicholls & Cawrse topped their group but lost in the last 32 4-9.  Beale & Jeffery finished second in group and lost in the last 32 3-8.  Smith & Pomorey topped their group but were also lost in the Last 32 1-11.

Inter County Rinks
On Sunday Cornwall compete in the Inter County Rinks competition against Somerset, Devon & Dorset at Bristol Indoor Bowling Club.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced Devon in the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

Cornwall started the Premier Team match well taking three wins in the first session.  Nigel Nicholls 16-7 in the Singles and in the Pairs David Balow & David Studden and Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse 15-13 and 17-11 respectively.  The second session Cornwall take another three wins to lead 12-4 at the lunch break, Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams 12-7 in the Triples and in the Fours Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Neil Gribble & Luke Jolly 20-14 and Ray Jeffery, Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale 16-7.

Cornwall continued to dominate the the match in the third session taking ten of the twelve points on offer.  Nicholls 14-5 and Peter Hore 14-14 in the Singles saw the bonus points shared.  In the Pairs Balow & Studden 12-10 and Boraston & Cawrse 20-13 completed a clean sweep of the points on offer.

The final session saw Cornwall take another ten points.  John Worton, Keith Williams & Chris Roberts 18-6 and Banks, Dyer & Williams 16-9 saw the Triples secure the bonus points.  In the Fours Jeffery, Daniell, Tripp & Beale's 15-8 saw the bonus points secured with the final match result was Cornwall 32 points 218 shots Devon 8 points 179 shots.  In the days other match in the group Dorset defeated Somerset 24-16. 

Cornwall have moved in to top spot on 123 points, Somerset have 119 but have completed there matches, Dorset have 104 and Devon have finished on 94.  11 points from the final match away to Dorset on 7th January at the Dorset Bowls Resort will secure the top spot.

Individual Scores (Cornwall First)
Singles:- Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) 16-7 & 14-5 and Peter Hore (Holmans) 6-24 & 14-14.
Pairs:- David Balow (Marazion) & David Studden (Holmans) 15-13 & 12-10 and Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel) 17-11 & 20-13.
Triples:- John Worton (St Newlyn East), Keith Williams (Penlee) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 6-14 & 18-6 and Bob Banks (Boscastle), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) 12-7 & 16-9.
Fours:- Graham Reeves (Saltash), Richard Kerr (Landrake), Neil Gribble (Landrake) & Luke Jolly (Withiel) 20-14 & 1-17 and Elise Daniell (Holmans), Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) & Callum Beale (Withiel) 16-7 & 15-8.

Cornwall's A Team shared the first session with wins in the Pairs for Glynn Roy & Alan Holden 18-10 and Des Pengelly & Sandra Worton 14-12.  The second session saw only one win for Cornwall with Betty Temple-Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthews winning 23-3 in the Triples.  Cornwall trailed 6-10 at the lunch break.
 
The third session saw wins for Dennis Shorthouse 14-9 in the Singles and Roy & Holden 16-8 in the Pairs.  Cornwall took the Pairs bonus points and Devon the Singles to leave the match score 12-16 in Devon's favour.  Cornwall found form in the final session taking ten of the twelve points on offer to secure the match win.  In the Triples Heidi Kerr, David Topliffe & Mike Webster's 15-5 helped to secure the the bonus points.  In the Fours Meg Horrell, Nathan Waters, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell and Rose Dyer, John Dodd, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey won 11-8 & 15-8 respectively to secure the Fours bonus points.  The final match score Cornwall 22 point 198 shots Devon 18 points 196 shots.

In the table Somerset will finish top with 148 points and Devon are second on 130 points, neither can be overhauled by Dorset who lie third on 86 points or Cornwall fourth on 76 points.  Cornwall need a season's best 26 points to overhaul Dorset for third in the final match of the season on 7th January at the Dorset Bowls Resort.

Singles:- Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) 13-17 & 14-9 and Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) 8-20 & 9-23.
Pairs:- Glynn Roy (Withiel) & Alan Holden (Landrake) 18-10 & 16-8 and Des Pengelly (Landrake) & Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) 14-12 & 11-15.
Triples:- Heidi Kerr (Landrake), David Topliffe (Boscastle) & Mike Webster (Blisland) 7-27 & 15-5 and Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland), Max Burden (Blisland) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) 23-3 & 11-12.
Fours:- Meg Horrell (Withiel), Nathan Waters (Blisland), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) & Ken Horrell (Withiel) 7-11 & 11-8 and Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), John Dodd (St Newlyn East), Lynne Davey (Landrake) & Gary Davey (Landrake) 6-8 & 15-8.

National Championship Qualifiers
On Saturday the remaining National Championship Qualifiers were played at Carnmoggas.

The Fours were played in a Round Robin format with the deciding game seeing Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Luke Jolly (Withiel) and Callum Beale (Withiel) defeating Elise Daniell (Holmans), David Studden (Holmans), Karen Watson (Saltash) and Peter Hore (Holmans) to top the group, leaving Hore's rink in second. Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), John Worton (St Newlyn East), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) and Kevin Williams (Porthleven) finished in third place.

With only two entries in the Mixed Fours this was a straight play off with Daniell, Studden, Watson & Peter Hore always in control against Lynne Davey (Landrake), Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel) and Gary Davey (Landrake), winning 18-1 over 7 ends.

In the Singles, the Semi Finals saw Watson beat Boraston 12-6, while Beale opened up a 7-1 lead against Nicholls, going on to win 9-4. In the final Watson beat Beale 8-6 and in the third place playoff Nicholls won 7-6.

Cornwall now await to here how many spots have been allocated in each discipline at the Championships.
