COUNTY FOURS
On Saturday 16 teams took part in the County Fours at Carnmoggas,  The teams were split into four groups of four with the top two from each group qualifying for the finals in March.

From Group One Simon Lees, Ray Jeffery, Morgan Lees & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) with 6 points +22 shots and Sandra Worton, John Worton, Carol Dodd & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) on 3 +2 progress to the finals.  Group Two qualifiers were Elise Daniell (Holmans), Kevin Williams (Porthleven), Luke Jolly & Peter Hore (Holmans) on 6 +20 and Neil Gribble, Graham Reeves, Alan Holden & Mollie Jones (Landrake) on 3 -3.

Mark Slack, Martin Boraston, Caroline Trubshaw & Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) on 4 +11 topped Group Three with Tony Jago (Withiel), Mark Albon (Luxulyan), Meg Horrell & Ken Horrell (Withiel) second on 4 -2 to progress to to the finals.  Group Four qualifiers were Peter Rendle, Sally Dewdney, Pat Ayotte & Mark Payne (Penzance) on 6 +14 and Heidi Kerr, Richard Kerr, Dianne Shorthouse & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) on 3 +8.

The finals will be played at Carnmoggas on Saturday 11th March 2023.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Exeter to take on Devon in the Inter County Championship.

The first session of the Premier Team match saw Cornwall win three of the four games with Nigel Nicholls (18-12) and Peter Hore (14-13) in the Singles and Treeve Pollard & David Studden (22-7) in the Pairs.  The second session saw Devon come back taking seven of the eight points on offer with Cornwall's solitary point scored by Sandra Worton, Richard Kerr & Kevin Williams in the Triples (13-13).

Cornwall won three out of the four games in the afternoon Singles and Pairs with the same players, Nicholls (17-9) and Hore (15-14) in the Singles and Pollard & Studden (13-11) in the Pairs.  Cornwall led the match by 17 points to 11 with a session to play.  The final session saw a repeat of the morning with Devon again taking seven of the eight points on offer and the bonus points for both the Triples and Fours.  Cornwall's only point from the session scores by Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott and Martin Boraston (8-8) in the Triples.

The final match score Devon 22 points 192 shots Cornwall 18 points 194 shots.  In the day's other group game Dorset kept up their 100% record with a 32 points to 8 win away to Hampshire.

With the halfway point of the group stages reached Cornwall lie fourth in the group on 34 points though have now completed all their away matches.  Hampshire lie in third 12 points ahead of Cornwall having completed all their home matches.  With three home matches remaining Cornwall must outscore Hampshire, who face three away matches, by 13 points over the three remaining matches to avoid the potential of relegation to the Premier Two competition.  Next up for Cornwall are Dorset at Carnmoggas on 13th November followed by Devon at the same venue on the 4th December.  Cornwall round off the group stages on Sunday 22nd January at Carnmoggas with Hampshire the visitors.

The A Team enjoyed a shared first session with wins for Graham Reeves (13-5) in the Singles and Carol & John Dodd (13-10) in the Pairs.  
Cornwall took a five points to three advantage from the second session with wins for Mark Williams, Mike Webster & David Topliffe (11-10) in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Heidi Kerr, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell (21-3) in the Fours.  Henry Matthews, Simon Rees, Ray Jeffery & Morgan Rees drew in the Fours (9-9).

Cornwall failed to pick up a single point in the afternoon Singles and Pairs to trail 9-17 going into the final session where Cornwall could only pick up a solitary win with Matthews, Rees, Jeffery & Rees (10-8) in the Fours where Cornwall also secured the bonus points.

The final match score Devon 27 points 194 shots Cornwall 13 points 156 shots.  At the halfway point of the group stages in the A Team competition five points separate the counties with Devon on 42 points, Dorset on 41 and Cornwall on 37.  Like the Premier Team the A Team have completed their away fixtures and can look to capitalise on home advantage in the remaining two fixtures.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Cornwall are back in Inter County Championship action on Sunday when both the Premier and A Teams travel to Exeter to face Devon at the Isca Indoor Bowling Club.

After the disappointing result against Dorset three weeks ago the Premier Team will be looking to make up ground to the other counties in the group.  Team Manager Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) returns to the team in the Singles, Austen Runnells (Luxulyan) and Neil Gribble (Landrake) come into the Fours with Graham Reeves (Landrake) and Gary Davey (Liskeard) dropping to the A Team.

The A Team will be looking to follow up their win away to Dorset with another solid result.

COUNTY FOURS
On Saturday the County Fours will be played at Carnmoggas with play getting under way at 0900 and expected to continue to around 1500.  Eight teams will progress from the day to the County Finals in March.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Over the past weekend four local bowlers travelled to Norway for the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open tournament.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) had the best results of the four reaching the Quarter Finals of the Cup competition.  Drawn in Group 12 Nigel lost his first game against Paul Cairnduff (NIR) 7-10 before winning his remaining four group games against Robert Kidd (NIR) 9-8, Johan Andersson (SWE) 12-9, Tom Erik Johnsen (NOR) 17-9 and John Jillings (WAL) 13-8 to top the group and progress to the main Cup competition.  In the last 32 Nigel defeated Jonas Häger (SWE) 12-7.  

The last 16 Nigel edged past Dimitri Payne (BEL) 8-7 before losing 12-13 to Ed Sawbridge (END) in the Quarter Finals.  The weekend's results see Nigel move back into the Top 10 of the SMPT World Rankings and 7th in this season's Order of Merit standings.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) was drawn in Group 15 where she started with wins against Stephen Oliver (IRE) 8-7 and Åke Almli (SWE) 11-7.  Defeats followed to Lee Whiteley (ENG) 6-14 and Olle Bäckgren (SWE) by the same score.  A 14-4 win in the Sunday mornings final group game against Hege Strand Aarnes (NOR) left Elise on 9 points with Whiteley and Bäckgren but placed the lowest of the three due to the head to head scores.  In the last 64 of the Plate Competition Elise won 15-7 against Angharad Brideaux (WAL).  In the last 32 Elise defeated Pontus Guldestam (SWE) 14-3 before losing to Paul Cairnduff (NIR) 15-2 in the last 16.  Elise has moved up 9 places in the World Rankings to 36th.

David Studden (Holmans), playing his first SMPT competition since the 2018/19 season, was drawn in Group 7.  David started Saturday with a defeat to Gary McNabb (NIR) 9-13 and then followed with three wins against Finn Arild Zinder Aarnes (NOR) 15-6, David Ryste (NOR) 10-9 and Ferdinand Frantzen (NOR) 14-7.  Sunday's final group game saw defeat to Joakin Jensen (NOR) 7-12 to finish third in the group.  In the last 32 of the Plate Competition David won 11-5 against Gary Moore (NIR) before losing 9-8 in the last 16 to eventual Plate winner Pauline Beattie (NIR).  

Peter Hore (Holmans) was drawn in Group 2 where he started with a win against Bjørn H Haukjem (NOR) 13-8,  Peter's second game saw defeat to Catherine McCrossan (NIR) 9-15 before completing Saturday's games with a win against Joel Häger (SWE) 12-9 and a draw against Tina Thyden (SWE) 10-10).  Sunday morning's final group game against Olav Jeremiassen (NOR) ended in defeat 11-9 to leave Peter third in the group.  In the last 32 of the Plate Peter lost 5-15 to Rune Kløvtveit (NOR) 5-15.  Peter drops 6 places in the rankings to 37th.

The next SMPT competitions are over the weekend of 26th and 27th November with the World Fours and Pairs in Belfast.  Singles competition returns on the weekend of the 7th and 8th January with the British Open in York.

COUNTY TWO WOOD PAIRS
On Sunday the first of the County Championship competitions was played at Carnmoggas with 50 players taking part in the County Two Wood Pairs.  The pairs were drawn into 6 groups, 1 of 5 and 5 of 4 with the group winners and best two runners up qualifying for the finals on Sunday 12th March 2023.

Group One was topped by Tony Jago (Withiel) & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) with 6 points +24 shots, second in the group were Mark Payne (Penzance) & Howard McCormack (Penlee) with 4 +12.  The day's top scorers were in Group Two where Sandra & John Worton (St Newlyn East) scored 6 +40, second in the group were Austen Runnalls & Steve Williamson (Luxulyan) with 4 -2.

Group Three saw three pairs finish on 4 points with two Landrake pairs tied on 4 +9, the top spot going to Phil Searle & Alan Holden thanks to their 10-5 win against club mates Graham Reeve & Neil Gribble.  Christine & Paddy Spear (Saltash Kernow) were third with a -1 shot difference.   John Read & Martin Boraston (Duloe) topped Group Four with 6 +21 ahead of Karen Watson & David Cole (Saltash) on 4 +15 which earned them the second runners up spot.  

Group Five saw three pairs finish on 4 points with Nigel Nicholls & Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity) top with a shot difference of +20 ahead of Rita Hancock & Mike Webster (Blisland) +3 and Graham Bickle & John Worth (Dobwalls) -1.  Group Six was topped by Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr (Landrake) with 5 +21 ahead of Peter Hore & Elise Daniell (Holmans) who took the first runners up spot with 4 +25.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR - NORWEGIAN OPEN
The coming weekend four local bowlers travel to Norway to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open in Skien.  The competition takes the usual format of group stages played through Saturday and Sunday morning followed by a knockout competition on Sunday afternoon and into the evening.

Peter Hore, currently ranked 31 in the SMPT rankings, is drawn in Group Two where he will be against Tina Thyden (NOR - Rank N/A), Bjørn Haukjem (NOR - N/A), Catherine McCrossan (IRE - 295), Olav Jeremiassen (NOR - 561) and Joel Häger (SWE - 14).

David Studden, currently ranked 375, is drawn in Group Seven where he will face Joakim Jensen (NOR - 458), Finn Arild Zinder Aarnes (NOR - N/A), Gary McNabb (IRE - 9), David Ryste (NOR - 454) and Ferdinand Frantzen (NOR - 50).

Nigel Nicholls, currently ranked 11, is drawn in Group Twelve where he will face Tom Erik Johnsen (NOR - 160), John Jillings (WAL - 33), Paul Cairnduff (IRE - 19), Johan Andersson (SWE - 500) and Robert Kidd (IRE - 500).

Elise Daniell, currently ranked 45, is drawn in Group Fifteen where she will face Lee Whiteley (ENG - 341), Åkw Almli (SWE - 597), Olle Bäckgren (SWE - 63), Hege Strand Aarnes (NOR - N/A) and Stephen Oliver (IRE - 277).

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Bere Regis to face Dorset in the second round of Inter County Championship fixtures.

Cornwall's Premier Team started the match with a couple of wins in the first session, Percy Tripp 13-12 in the Singles and John Worton & Steve Smith 12-9 in the Pairs.  Cornwall failed to pick up another point in the match, going on to lose 36 points to 4 and 251 shots to 137. In the day's other group match Devon travelled to Hampshire coming away with a 30-10 win leaving Cornwall bottom of the group table in the relegation play off place.

It was a different story for Cornwall's A Team playing their first match of the season.  The first session saw a 6-2 session advantage to Cornwall with Dennis Shorthouse winning 15-10 in the Singles and wins for Des Pengelly & Alan Holden 18-17 and Lynne Davey and David Topliffe 13-10 in the Pairs.  Cornwall repeated the score in the second session with Leonard Lee, Jon Read and Tony Jago winning 21-7 in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Heidi Kerr, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell 11-7 and Henry Matthews, Simon Lees, Ray Jeffery & Morgan Lees 10-9 in the Fours.  

The third session was shared with Cornwall winning both Singles, Neil Gribble 22-9 and Shorthouse 13-11 securing the bonus points.  The Pairs both lost by narrow margins but secured thr bonus points.  The final session saw Dorset's only session advantage of the day with Cornwall's only points coming from the Triple of Dianne Shorthouse, Mark Williams and Mike Webster 18-12.  The Triples secured a further two bonus points to leave the final score Dorset 16 points 188 shots Cornwall 24 points 202 shots.

Cornwall's Premier Team will re-group ahead of the final away matches of the season on the 30th October when both teams travel to Exeter to face Devon.

INTER AREA LEAGUE
On Saturday the first round of Inter Area League matches were played at Carnmoggas.  In a new format for this year teams are made up of a minimum of 10 players making up 1 Singles, 1 Pair, 1 Triple and 1 Four with the four areas playing each on each match day.

The results of the first of three match days were

Singles Central 6 points +12 shots, West 4 +9, East 2 -3, North 0 -18
Pairs Central 4 +14, North 4 +7, West 2 -9, East 2 -12
Triples North 4 +25, Central 3 +6, West 3 -9, East 2 -22
Fours East 6 +26, North 4 +1, Central 2 -4, West 0 -23

Totals Central 15 +28, North 12 +15, East 12 -11, West 9 -32

The next round for fixtures will take place on Sunday 20th November at Carnmoggas.

ESMBA OPEN SINGLES
On Saturday 1st October Peter Hore and Elise Daniell from the Holmans Club travelled to Solihull to compete in the ESMBA Open Singles competition.

Peter progressed unbeaten from the group stages with wins against Martin Grange 9-7, Adam Smith 13-11 and Jason Finney 8-4.  In the first round of the knockouts Peter defeated Nathan Caines 12-10.  In the last 16 Peter faced Jack Knight losing 1-12.

Elise had mixed results in the groups losing 4-13 to Glenn Harvey, winning 14-8 against Elaine Sadler and finishing with a 4-10 loss to Lynn Orlando.  Finishing third in group Elise went into the Plate competition where she won 9-7 against Daniel Rigby before losing in the Quarter Finals 3-12 to Nick Wyatt.

INTER AREA LEAGUE
On Saturday the first of three Inter Area League fixtures will be played at Carnmoggas.  The format has been changed for this year in response to concerns that area reps may not be able to field full teams of 20 bowlers.  Areas will only need a minimum of 10 players.  The four areas will play each other on each of the three dates giving players up to three games on each day.

AREA LEAGUES
The evening league program gets underway in the west of the County this week with the other areas starting later in the month.
