CARNMOGGAS INDOOR BOWLING CLUB IN ST AUSTELL,
SECURES £49,920 FROM SPORTING LEGACY FUND

·         Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club secures £49,920 National Lottery funding from Sport England
·         Free taster sessions for local community to celebrate the investment
·         Sport England announces £40 million to extend Inspired Facilities Fund to 2017

An Indoor Bowling Club in Little Polgooth, St Austell, Cornwall, has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.

Sport England today revealed that more than 1,300 local sports projects across the country have now received National Lottery funding through Inspired Facilities, parts of its Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme.

Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club will receive £49,920 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the facilities to include new insulation, improved lighting and heating, existing disabled access, refurbishment of toilet block and changing rooms, kitchen, and spectator seating areas.  The enhanced facilities will enable the Club to attract additional local sporting organisations to use the venue and increase the current membership of the Bowling Club.  The Club has also recently secured a contract with Cornwall County Short Mat Bowls Association for their  County tournaments and competitions.

To celebrate the award, local people are being invited to free taster sessions between 10.00am and 5.00pm on Saturday and Sunday, 21 and 22 September and Sunday, 29 September 2013, to try out the sport.  All are welcome and food and refreshments will be provided.

Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, said: “A year on from the Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Cornwall.”

“With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities Fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more Sports Clubs in the South West who play such a vital role in grassroots sports.”

Local MP, Steve Gilbert, Liberal Democrat for St Austell and Newquay said: “This is a significant award that will make a real difference to the Club enabling it to build on the excellent work that it already does and reach out to new parts of the community too.  I’d like to commend those at the Club who were responsible for the bid to Sport England and it’s very welcome that this extra investment is coming to our part of the world.”

Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club is one of well over 300 projects across England receiving lottery investment from the fourth round of the Inspired Facilities Fund and one of more than 1,300 to benefit overall.

Many more communities are now set to benefit from the hugely popular fund, after Sport England today announced that it was extending Inspired Facilities until 2017, with an additional £40 million of National Lottery funding to invest.  Bids will be accepted for the next round of Inspired Facilities funding from the 21 October 2013.  You can find out more at: www.sportengland.org/inspiredfacilities.

Tony Watson's Trophy Triumphs Again

On Saturday 3rd August, the annual Tony Watson's Trophy charity Short Mat Bowls Competition was held at St. Minver SMBC. It was the third time that the event had been held in memory of Tony Watson, who passed away in August 2010, and the aim was to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, who helped Tony through the last few months of his life.

There was a great turn out of teams, some travelling from as far as Sidbury in Devon to play, with countless teams continuing their support of the charity competition.

During the group stages, three teams successfully won all of their games producing a tense moment as shot differences were calculated and finalised. Therefore, although Treviscoe played admirably they, unfortunately, did not qualify due to shot difference.  The final became a well anticipated game as Withiel qualified with 6 points plus 36 shots and Hotshots proceeded to the final with 6 point plus 30 shots.

This made for a tense final game with many onlookers staying to observe the outcome. The final was a great game with the score being 8-9 on the penultimate end to the Hot Shots. The pressure was then on Withiel to pull it back on the final end despite their early lead in the first six ends. Elise Daniell and Neil Gribble built a good head leaving Nick Truscott and Peter Hore very little to do; they had the jack surrounded and it proved very difficult for skip Ken Horrell to save the day.  This saw The Hot Shots picking up a further two shots on the last end making the final score 8 – 11 to The Hot Shots. A thrilling final for a fantastic day.

Overall, throughout the day, £740.00 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Support, making it the third, very successful year in a row.

The day was a great success, everyone had a brilliant time and ultimately lots of money was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.  The Watson family would like to thank everyone for their participation and making the day enjoyable for all involved.  Also thanks to St. Minver School, St. Minver SMBC, Looe Lions, Egloshayle Rainbows, Sharps BreweryEden ProjectCrealySainsburys and Tesco for their generosity with this event.
