INTER AREA LEAGUE

On Sunday the first round of Inter Area League matches were played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.  West were 24 -16 winners against the East and Central defeated North 29 - 11.

The next round of fixtures will be played at Carnmoggas on the 17 November when North will take on West and Central face East.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday (6 October) Cornwall face Somerset at Carnmoggas in the second Inter County match of the season.  Team Manager Nigel Nicholls will be keen to see both the Premier and A team build on the positives from an otherwise disappointing opening fixture against Devon a fortnight ago.  Due to player availability some enforced changes will be made to the teams.

Peter Spargo Memorial Cup Final

The Peter Spargo Memorial Cup final was contested by teams from Dobwalls and Landrake at Morley Tamblyn in Liskeard on Wednesday evening (25 September).

The competition is played in a similar way to the County Team of Three with games of Singles, Pairs and Triples making up the final game result.

In the final Martin Boraston for Dobwalls defeated Landrake's Neil Gribble 9-5.  David Griffin and Derek Newton were 10-7 winners for Dobwalls against Landrake's Diane & Dennis Shorthouse.  The Triples game also went the way of Dobwalls 9-6.

The cup was presented by Liskeard SMBC Chairman Paul Cummins who paid tribute to Peter Spargo who was a stalwart of not only the Liskeard club but also the Cornwall County squad for many years.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall suffered a disappointing start to their ESMBA Inter County Championship campaign with both the Premier and A teams suffering heavy defeats at the hands of Devon at ISCA Bowling Club, Exeter on Sunday.

The Premier Team scored a solitary win from the morning session with a 9-8 victory for Graham Ford, Gillian Cawrse &Nicholas Truscott in the Triples.  At the lunch break Cornwall trailed 2 points to 14 and 61 shots to 118. 

A solitary point came Cornwall's way in the first afternoon session from a 12-12 draw for Elise Daniell & Mark Eddy the Pairs.  The final session proved to be Cornwall's best of the day with three points scored in the Fours.  Henry Kendall, Neil Gribble, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore winning 12-3 and John Worton, Brenda Sleep, Keith Matthews & Chris Roberts drawing 6-6.  The final match score Devon 34 points 207 shots Cornwall 6 points 136 shots.

The A Team started with a win in the first session for Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden 15-12 in the Pairs.  A further three points were added in the second session with a win for Sheila Hodge, Jim Rule, Carol Ford & Terry Bray 9-7 and draw for Kath Goodman, Jim Stanley, Pam Williams & Carolyn Stanley 10-10 in the fours.  Halfway through the match Cornwall trailed 5 points to 11 and 76 shots to 112.

The afternoon saw Cornwall record three points from the two sessions Kath Goodman, Jim Stanley, Pam Williams & Carolyn Stanley winning 8-5 in the fours and Melba Kitt, Sandra Worton & Derek Newton drawing 10-10 in the triples.  The final match score Devon 32 points 211 shots Cornwall 8 points 143 shots.

Cornwall will look to bounce back quickly when they face Somerset at Carnmoggas on Sunday 6 October.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

The first round of Inter Area League fixtures will be contested on Sunday (29 September) with North playing Central and East playing West at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club.

ENGLAND

Cornwall's three England squad members Peter Hore, Elise Daniell & Nigel Nicholls will take part in the latest England squad day on Saturday as they bid for places in November's British Isles Championship team.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday 50 bowlers took part in the County squad trials at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club with Team Manager Nigel Nicholls and Premier Team Captain Peter Hore keeping a close watch on players as they formulate what they hope will be two winning teams for this years championship which starts with a visit to Exeter on Sunday to take on Devon.

The initial 50 has been whittled down to 40 bowlers who are confirmed for the Devon match although a further day of practice on Saturday will confirm the final composition of the team and playing positions.

COUNTY TRIALS

The new season gets underway on Sunday with the County Squad Trials taking place at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club near St Austell with play starting at 0900. 

Under new team manager Nigel Nicholls 51 bowlers from 17 clubs will be seeking the 40 places available in the County teams for the first match away to Devon on Sunday 22 September at ISCA Indoor Bowling Club in Exeter.

The full program matches for Cornwall in the group stages of the ESMBA Inter County Championship for this season is.

Short Mat Players Tour UK Open

Over the weekend of 31 August and 1st September eight local bowlers travelled to Bromsgrove to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour UK Open competition against some of the best bowlers from across the UK, Ireland, Belgium and Sweden.

Cornwall's three England squad members recorded the best overall positions with Nigel Nicholls qualifying for the Main Knockout before being knocked out at the last 64 stage by Jason McLean 7-15.  Elise Daniell and Peter Hore progressed into the Plate competition with Elise bowing out at the last 64 stage to Gethin Davies (Wal) 4-13 and Peter losing to Steve Stanton (Eng) 7-11 at the last 32 stage.

Cornwall's other bowlers all went into the Wooden Spoon competition with Landrake's Dennis Shorthouse progressing the furthest reaching the semi-finals before bowing out to George Crothers (Ire) by 7 shots to 10.  Luke Jolly reached the last 16 before losing to Keith Elliot (Eng) 6-12.  In the last 32 Elliot ended Nicholas Truscott's run in the competition inflicting a 7-9 defeat.  Neil Gribble's tournament also ended at the last 32 stage with a 6-16 loss to Russell Stallibrass (Eng). Tom Westlake's competition ended at the hands of Luke Jolly with a 6-14 loss.
