NEWS RELEASE 18 December 2016

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday 34 bowlers took part in the County Two Wood Singles at Carnmoggas.  Split into morning and afternoon sessions 18 and 16 players took part respectively with four qualifiers from each session going through to the finals later in the season.

From the morning session Peter Hore (Holmans) went through on shot difference with 5 pts +24 shots from Group One after drawing the deciding game against Bob Smith (Porthleven)  who finished on 5 +16.  In Group Two the short odds would have been on an to that point unbeaten David Balow (Marazion) who came up against John Worton (Ladock) who had drawn both his opening games in the final group game. It was Worton however who won by 8 shots to take top spot with 4 +8 ahead of Balow's 4 -3.

Alan Holden (Landrake) was unbeaten in Group Three to finish with 6 +16.  Having lost to Holden, Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) won his other two games to finish second in group with 4 +8.  Group Four saw three bowlers finish on four points with Karen Watson (Saltash) topping the table with 4 +24, Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) second with 4 +9 and Kevin Williams (Porthleven) third with 4 +4.

In the afternoon session Graham Reeves (Saltash) topped Group One with an unbeaten 6 +29 ahead of club mate John Nixon on 4 -5.  Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) was also unbeaten in a group that included both current County A Team singles players to finish on 6 +23 with Tony Baldwin (Callington) second with 4 +1.

Chris Fry (Treviscoe) won a last game decider in Group Three against Gerald Fisher (Illogan) to finish unbeaten with 6 +22 ahead of Fisher's 4 +17.  Group Four was also decided on a last game decider between Tom Westlake (Treviscoe) and Elise Daniell (Holmans).  Westlake prevailed to to finish with an unbeaten 6 +15 ahead of Daniell's 4 +/-0.

The eight group winners will play the finals later in the season.

COUNTY LEAGUES

In the West Area Holmans, who have lead the Premier Division throughout the first half of the season only scored two points away to Newlyn Trinity Jowsters on Tuesday to finish the first half of the season on 58 points.  Jowsters have two matches in hand and sit second on 51 points.  In the Central area Withiel lead the way on 32 points at the end of the first half of the season with a nine point lead over Lostwithiel. 

In the East Callington Eagles led on 30 points three ahead of Landrake with Saltash Blues a further point behind.  Promoted Boscastle lead the way in the North five points ahead of Blisland.
 
WEST AREA FOUR WOOD SINGLES
The Western Area Four Wood Singles were played recently. The 8 finalists are Charles Mullis (Centenary), Gerald Fisher (Redruth), Alan Parker (Penlee), Kevin Williams (Porthleven), Ian Sinclair (Hayle), David Balow (Marazion), Terry Jackson (Penzance) and Don Falck (Marazion).  The finals 
will be contested on the afternoon of Sunday 5th March at Penlee.

COMING UP
In January the County Four Wood Pairs will be played over the weekend on 7th and 8th January at Carnmoggas.  The 14th & 15th will see Nigel Nicholls, Peter Hore, Elise Daniell & Tom Westlake travel to Sweden to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Open whilst back in England the ESMBA host the Top Club Competition.  On Saturday 21st the ESMBA host an Open Singles competition ahead of a squad practice day on Sunday 22nd.  Locally the final round of Inter Area League games will be played on the same day.

INTER COUNTY v DORSET
Cornwall recently hosted Dorset at Carnmoggas IBC for the final group matches of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

The Premier team started strongly winning three of the four games in the first session.  In Singles Nigel Nicholls won 13-12 with Peter Hore losing 15-19.  In the Pairs both John Worton & Karen Watson and David Balow & David Studden won 14-11 and 15-8 respectively.  Cornwall maintained the lead in the second session taking four of the eight points on offer.  In Triples Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse won 12-9 and Mike Dyer, Bob Banks & Kevin Williams losing 7-14.  In Fours Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Neil Gribble won 10-8 and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake and Luke Jolly lost 8-17.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall led 10 points to 6 and 94 shots to 98.

The third session saw the game points shared and Cornwall taking the bonus points in both Singles and Pairs.  In the Singles Nicholls won 18-11 with Hore losing 11-14.  In the Pairs Balow and Studden won 18-9 and Worton & Watson lost 8-19. The match score moving onto Cornwall 18 points 149 shots Dorset 10 points 151 shots.  The final session saw Cornwall take all the points on offer taking four wins and the bonus points in both disciplines.  In Triples Cawrse and Williams won 12-11 and 21-5 respectively and in the Fours Gribble won 15-9 and Jolly 14-8.  The final match score Cornwall 30 points 211 shots Dorset 10 points 184 shots.  

In the days other match Devon defeated Somerset 25 points to 15.  Cornwall and Devon qualify for the knockout stages of the Inter County Championships with just the matter of group position to be decided in Devon's outstanding match against Somerset where at least 11 points will see them top the group.

Cornwall's A Team started well in the first session of their match taking six of the eight points on offer.  In Singles Ronald Thomas won 12-7 and Chris Roberts lost 10-11.  In Pairs Raymond Jeffery & Keith Williams and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden won 12-8 & 18-7 respectively.  Dorset clawed back to level the match in the second session with only Graham Ford, John Dodd & Tony Baldwin picking up a win in the Triples 13-9.  Lynne Davey, Alan Holden & Gary Davey lost 8-10 and in the Fours Henry Kendall, Sandra Worton, Mike Webster & Keith Matthews and Meg Horrell, Brenda Sleep, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell lost 6-10 and 7-9 respectively.  At the halfway point the match was drawn 8 points apiece.

The third session saw Cornwall re-establish a lead in the match.  In Singles Roberts and Thomas won 13-9 and 12-11 respectively.  In Pairs Jeffery & Williams drew 12-12 and Temple-Smith & Burden lost 10-15.  The bonus points were secured by Cornwall in both disciplines giving Cornwall a 17 points to 11 lead in the match with a session to play.   Cornwall took a clean sweep for wins in the final session.  In the Triples Davey and Baldwin won 24-10 and 11-8 respectively and in the Fours Horrell and Matthews won 14-8 and 9-5 respectively.  Cornwall took the bonus points in both disciplines to win the match by 29 points and 191 shots to Dorset's 11 points and 149 shots.

In the days other game Somerset defeated Devon 26 points to 14 leaving Cornwall 27 points ahead of Somerset who have a match to play.  Cornwall a certain of a place in the end of season knockout competition.

The outstanding Devon v Somerset fixture is due to be played in early January.

NATIONAL SINGLES, FOURS & MIXED FOURS QUALIFIERS
The remaining National Championship Qualifiers were played recently at Carnmoggas.  In the Singles Nigel Nicholls defeated Karen Watson 10-4 in the final.  Gillian Cawrse claimed third with a 10-9 win against Elise Daniell.

In the Fours Elise Daniell, David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson took top spot ahead of Richard Brown, Sandra Worton, John Worton & Chris Roberts in second.  Third place went to Tom Westlake, Gill Cawrse, Nigel Nicholls & Luke Jolly and fourth were Keith Williams, Dennis Shorthouse, Mike Dyer, Kevin Williams.

In the Mixed Fours Elise Daniell, David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson defeated Lynne Davey, Martin Boraston, Gillian Cawrse & Gary Davey 10-1.

COUNTY SINGLES
Over the past weekend the County Singles qualification competition was contested at Carnmoggas IBC.  On Saturday the six group winners were Chris Roberts 6 points +25 shots, Peter Hore 6 +24, Nicholas Truscott 4 +7, Tony Liddicoat 6 +24, Gary Davey 4 +14 & Tom Westlake 6 +31.  The best runners up making up the eight qualifiers for the knockout round were Neil Gribble 4 +6 and Tony Baldwin 4 +12.  In the knockout round Peter Hore defeated Tony Liddicoat 10-8, Neil Gribble won 9-8 against Nicholas Truscott.  Chris Roberts won 8-7 against Gary Davey and Tom Westlake defeated Tony Baldwin 15-8.

On Sunday the six group winners were Luke Jolly 6 +16, Karen Watson 5 +6, Richard Kerr 6 +36, Martin Borason 6 +21, David Balow 6 +19 and Max Burden 6 +15.  The best runners up qualifying for knockout round were Nigel Nicholls on 4 +17 and Kevin Williams 4 +15.  In the knockout round Karen Watson defeated Max Burden 16-1, Nigel Nicholls won 11-9 against Luke Jolly.  Martin Boraston won 15-4 against Kevin Williams and Richard Kerr defeated David Balow 9-8.

COMING UP
The final competition before the Christmas break will be played on Saturday at Carnmoggas with 38 bowlers split into two sessions of play during the course of the day.

BRITISH ISLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cornwall's England Squad members have been in Bromsgrove over the weekend competing in the British Isles Short Mat Bowls Championships.

David Studden, who plays for the Holmans club locally, teamed up with Emily Thomas from Dorset to claim the A Team Pairs title.  Defeat in their opening game to Wales 13-21 left the pair needing to win both their remaining games.  A 12-9 win against the Irish left them needing a further large win against Scotland and for Ireland to beat Wales to secure the title.  A dominant 31-3 win against the Scots and Ireland winning left Dave and Emily with the title, the final scores being Eng 4 points +23 shots, Ire 4 +13, Wal 4 +1, Sco 0 -37.

Peter Hore (Holmans) & Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) were joined by Somerset's James Scoins and Wiltshire's Thomas Bright in the Fours in which they finishing in third place after defeats to Ireland 8-15 and Wales 10-15 and a 22-6 win against Scotland.  The final positions Ire 6 +19, Wal 4 +26, Eng 2 +4, Sco 0 -49.

Ireland took the Singles with 6 +12 ahead of Wales 4 +4, England 2 -5 and Scotland 0-11.  Ireland also claimed the Triples with 4 +12 ahead of England with 4 +8, Wales 4 +7 and Scotland 0 -27.

Ireland claimed the team event  where each country is represented by four rinks playing each country twice over the two days in six rounds of games.

On Saturday England started with a 52-32 win over Wales followed by a 63-26 win over Scotland.  The day ended with a narrow 37-40 defeat to Ireland.  Sunday saw a 47-28 win over Wales, a massive 71-27 win against Scotland leaving a final game decider against Ireland which the Irish won 49-37.  Ireland took the title with a maximum 12 points and +193 shots, England were 2nd with 8 +105, Wales 3rd with 4 -73 and Scotland 4th with 0 -225.

Peter Hore (Holmans) skipped Peter Roberts (Cheshire), Jamie Forster (Norfolk) & Peter Fautley (Essex) winning 4 games with a +50 shot difference.  Tom Westlake (Treviscoe) played lead to Callum Beale (Northants), Stephen Holdsworth (Gloucestershire) & Nicky Bartlett (Kent) winning 3 games and drawing 1 with a +34 shot difference.  Elise Daniell (Holmans) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) played at lead and three respectively with Anthony Fautley (Essex) and Dave Lamb (Norfolk) winning 3 games with a +9 shot difference.  Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) played with Del Johns (Surrey) & Ollie Hipkiss (Gloucestershire) winning 2 games and drawing 1 with a +12 shot difference.

In the Main Championships England claimed the Pairs and Fours titles with Wales taking the Singles and Ireland the Triples and Team Competition.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall complete their Inter County Championship group fixtures when they host Dorset at Carnmoggas.  For Cornwall's Premier Team a win should secure second place and a spot in the knockout stages of the competition, Somerset would need a minimum of 58 out of a possible 80 points home and away to Devon to overhaul Cornwall with Somerset hosting Devon this weekend and the return in early January.  The current table reads

The A Team will be looking for a comprehensive win to confirm the top spot knowing that Somerset and Devon have games in hand.  The current table is

INTER AREA LEAGUE
On Sunday Inter Area League matches were played at Carnmoggas with Central defeating East by 30 points and 215 shots to 10 points 127 shots.  West won 23 points and 185 shots to 17 points and 172 shots against North.

WEST AREA FOUR WOOD PAIRS
On Saturday the West Area Four Wood Pairs were contested at Marazion and Hayle.  Eight pairs have qualified for finals later in the year.

The county league program is well under way with early front runners being established in each area.
