Inter County Championship

Following Sunday's final group match in the South West area between Devon and Somerset the final placings and future fixtures are now known.

Cornwall's Premier Team have fallen short of qualification for the knock out competition by the narrowest margin after Devon narrowly defeated Somerset 22-18, giving Somerset a total of 73 points in second place, 1 ahead of Cornwall's 72 in third.  Devon finished well clear at the top with 95 points.

Cornwall's A Team will play in the Last 16 of the Knock Out competition after finishing second in the group following Somerset's 21-19 win against Devon on Sunday.  Cornwall's opponents on the weekend of 6th/7th February will be Cheshire with the venue to be confirmed.

Both teams also have the finals of the Inter County Rinks to look forward to with the A Team due to play 30th January and Premier Team on the 5th March although confirmation is still awaited from the ESMBA.

Forthcoming Competitions
The calendar for January gives most bowlers a break from week after week action as National and International events dominated the fixture list.

The only local competition will be the Four Wood Pairs on the New Years weekend at Carnmoggas with 29 pairs due to play on each day.

On the 9th & 10th three local bowlers will be making the trip to Sweden for the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Open.

English Association events then take over the calendar for the rest of the month.The weekend on the 16th and 17th sees the ESMBA Open Fours contested on the Saturday and squad day on the Sunday whilst back in the County the final round of Inter Area League fixtures will be played.

On the 23rd and 24th the regional qualifiers for the ESMBA/Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club will be played.  On the 30th the A Team will play the ICC Rinks finals.

Inter County Championship

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Somerset for the final Inter County Round Robin matches of the season.

Team Manager Nigel Nicholls set the Premier Team the target of recording their first win of the season in a bid to secure second place in the group and progression to the main knock out competition later in the season.

The first session saw the points shared with Cornwall winning both Singles games, Nigel Nicholls 17-3 and Ed Dyer 14-9.  The second session saw Somerset take a five to three advantage, Cornwall's points scored in the Triples by John Worton, Tom Westlake & Kevin Williams with a 13-13 draw and in the Fours by Dennis Shorthouse, Nicholas Truscott, Neil Gribble & Peter Hore with a 10-4 win.  At the lunch break Somerset led 9 points to 7.

In the third session Cornwall brought themselves right back into contention picking up eight of the twelve points on offer.  In the Singles Nicholls and Dyer completed a whitewash with 10-9 and 13-8 wins respectively.  In the Pairs David Balow & David Studden won 10-16.  Cornwall led 15-13 going into the final session.

Cornwall sealed the match win in the final session again picking up eight of the twelve points on offer.  In the Triples Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse won 21-10 and in the Fours Richard Kerr, Percy Tripp, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher won 19-3. Both margins of victory ensured Cornwall secured the bonus points in both disciplines to take the overall match win Cornwall 23 points Somerset 17 and 198 to 173 shots. 

The result leaves Cornwall on 72 points in second place in the table with Devon a point ahead on 73 and Somerset third on 55 due to play the final game this weekend coming at ISCA.  Cornwall must wait on the result of this match to know if they will qualify for the knock out stages.

The A Team match started with Cornwall taking six points from the first session with wins for Chris Roberts 12-10 in the Singles and both Pairs Graham Reeves & Keith Matthews 16-9 and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden 16-12.  The second session saw Somerset reply with a five to three session advantage.  Cornwall's points all in the Triples with Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & David Topliffe winning 11-6 and Ruth Newbury, Tony Jago & Gary Davey drawing 9-9.  Cornwall led 9-7 at the half way point.

Points were shared in the third session six apiece.  In the Singles Roberts won 15-14 and in the Pairs Temple-Smith & Burden won 12-10 with Cornwall taking the Pairs bonus points.  The final session saw Cornwall take five game points but no bonus points.  In the Triples Newbury, Jago & Davey won 10-9, in the Fours Kath Goodman, Sheila Hodge, Sandra Worton & Keith Williams drew 11-11 and Lynne Davey, Mike Webster, Graham Luke & Graham Ford won 17-7.  The final match score 20 points apiece and 188-171 shots in Somerset's favour.  Cornwall top the group table with 80 points, Somerset are on 63 and Devon 57 with Devon hosting Somerset this coming weekend.

National Qualifiers
On Saturday the remaining National Championship qualifiers were contested at Carnmoggas.  The Pairs was contested first with a round robin followed by a knock out competition.

In the Semi Finals Gary Davey & Martin Boraston defeated Gillian Cawrse & Nigel Nicholls 8-7 and Kevin Williams & Mike Dyer took a four on the last end to defeat Peter Hore & Karen Watson 9-7.

Davey & Boraston won a tight final 7-6 against Williams & Dyer with Hore & Watson winning the third place play off 13-1.

The Triples followed and was played to the same format.  In the Semi Finals Sandra Worton, John Worton & Chris Roberts defeated Mike Dyer, David Balow & Kevin Williams 12-3 and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore  won 12-3 against Dennis Shorthouse, Marton Boraston & Ed Dyer.

Daniell, Truscott & Hore won the final against Worton, Worton & Roberts 10-3 with Dyer, Balow & Williams taking third place with a 9-8 win over Shorthouse, Boraston & Dyer.

County Mixed Fours
On Saturday 18 teams competed for eight places in the county finals for the County Mixed Fours.  Teams were split into four groups, one of six and three of four with the top two from each group qualifying.

Group One winners were Margaret Menhenick, Barbara Swaby, Tom Walsh & John Menhenick (Wadebridge) unbeaten with 6 points +5 shots.  Ruth Newbury, Esme Stokes, David Stokes & Alan Rathbone (Wadebridge) took second with 4 +13.  In Group Two Caroline Moore (Luxulyan), Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) were unbeaten with the days best score 6 +32.  Dot Nunn, Yolanda Featherstone (Saltash Wesley), Des Pengelly & Alan Holden (Landrake) took second with 2 -7.

A tight Group Three in which five of the six games were decided by three or less shots it was Kath Goodman, Tom Westlake, Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) who took the top spot with 6 +10.  Second went to Sandra Worton, John Worton, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (Ladock) with 3 points and a zero shot difference.  Group Four went the way of another unbeaten team, Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Lynne Davey & Gary Davey (Landrake) with 6 +19.  The final qualifiers were Betty Temple-Smith, Trish Hodge, Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 4 +16.

The qualifiers return to Carnmoggas on February 28th for the finals.

County Triples
On Sunday 37 teams over two sessions competed for eight places in the County Triples finals in March.

In the morning 18 teams played split into four groups with just the group winners qualifying.  In Group One Barry Kessell, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) were unbeaten with 6 +18.  Group Two winners were Mick Dyer, Raymond Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) with 6 +13.  Betty Temple-Smith, Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) topped Group Three with 6 +24.  Group Four was dominated by Tom Westlake, Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) with 6 +44.

The afternoon session saw 19 teams compete.  Group One saw three teams finish on four points with top spot going to Roy Sumner, David Foulds & David Balow (Marazion) with 4 +20.  Group Two similarly saw three teams on four points with Graham Luke, Carol Ford & Graham Ford taking the top spot with 4 +25.  Group Three went the way of Lynne Davey, Gary Davey (Landrake) & Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) with 4 +12.  The only unbeaten team of the afternoon were Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Dennis Shorthouse & Neil Gribble (Landrake) with 6 +34.

The finals will be played on Sunday 13th March at Carnmoggas.

British Isle Championships (Updated)

Over the weekend of 14th & 15th November 9 local bowlers travelled to Aberdeen to compete in the British Isles Short Mat Bowls Championships.

Tom Westlake, Luke Jolly (Treviscoe), Ed Dyer (Landrake) & Karen Watson (Saltash) as the current English National Champions took their place in the Fours championship.  They opened their campaign on Saturday with a 9-6 win over the hosts Scotland and followed up with a narrow 13-12 win against Wales.  In the days other other games Ireland drew 11-11 with Wales and defeated Scotland 19-3.  Going into Sunday's deciding game a win or draw would be enough against the strong Irish rink.  The game proved a tough one and an early large score against cost the Cornish rink as they were unable to recover and lost the game 3-19 finishing in second overall.

Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore competed in the Team event which was won by Ireland with England finishing in third place, both enjoyed mixed results in their respective rinks.  Peter, playing with Ryan Knight (Gloucestershire), Gareth Davies & A J Brown (Oxfordshire) had two defeats against Scotland 7-11 & 9-11, Won 13-8 & 12-4 against Wales and lost 7-12 & 7-8 against Ireland.  Nigel, playing with Adam Sultana (Essex), Malcolm Follis (West Midlands) & Barry Hedges (Essex) had a loss 8-9 and win 14-5 against Scotland, same against Wales 8-9 and 11-10 and double defeats against Ireland 7-14 and 2-22.  England won both sets of games against Scotland 37-30 & 48-25 and one against Wales 40-36 losing the second 36-41.  Against Ireland England were beaten 25-47 & 25-46.

David Studden played in the A Team Pairs with Peter Roberts (Cheshire) with a win against Scotland 20-11 and loss against Wales 11-15 all four nations went into the final round of games on two points.  A narrow two shot loss to Ireland 13-15 in the final game left the England Pair in third placce.

Gillian Cawrse played in the A Team Triples with Simon Warnes (Norfolk) & Oliver Hipkiss (Gloucestershire) and after defeats against Wales 13-15 and Ireland 9-14 the final game against Scotland ended with a 13-5 win to finish third overall.

Elise Daniell lined up in the A Team Rinks competition playing with Peter Roberts, Nicky Bartlett (Norfolk) & Keith Hawkins (Somerset).  The rink enjoyed a fine championship winning 5 out of six games taking wins against Scotland 21-3 & 12-4, Wales 11-5 & 14-7 and Ireland 12-4.  England won fove of the six games overall, 66-17 & 63-20 v Scotland, 41-30 & 32-27 v Wales and the second meeting with Ireland 34-30 to take the championship honours.  The first time in the history of the championships dating back to 1997 that Ireland have not taken the title.
