CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 25th February 2024

The first two National Championship titles of the season were contested over the weekend with the Mixed Fours on Saturday and Over 55's Pairs on Sunday.

Cornwall were represented by two teams in the Mixed Fours.  

Elise Daniell (Holmans), Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) were drawn in Group 1 where they faced Steve Bailey, Tracey Bailey, Sam Jackson & Linda Reilly (West Midlands) losing 7-8, Mark McHugh, Darren Mather, Maria Mather & Sheila Wilson (Greater Manchester) losing 4-9 and Derek Adams, Joanne Clements, Megan Leeder & Michael Rice (Suffolk) winning 8-4.  They finished third in the group, missing out on qualification for the knockout stages.

Mark Slack, Karen Burton, Caroline Trubshaw & Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) were drawn in Group 5 where they faced Tracy McLean, Leah Wood, Jason McLean & Ryan Knight (Hampshire) losing 2-11, Viv Morris, Ron Smith, Christine Belcher & Steve Morris (Oxfordshire) winning 12-5 and Anna Wickens, Graham Wickens, Millie Froud & Nigel Froud (East Sussex) 13-3.  They finished second in the group to qualify for the knockout stages.  In the first round they lost narrowly to Michael Doorey, Robert Doorey, Amanda Doorey & Grace Doorey (Kent) 7-8.

Cornwall were represented by four teams in the Over 55's Pairs.

Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) were drawn in Group 5 where they faced Ian Sanger & Robbie Gale (Dorset) winning 19-3, Jeff Branch & Dennis Mack (Hertfordshire)
winning 9-7 and Karen Kirby & Les Kirby (Wiltshire) losing 6-7.  The two wins were enough for top spot in the group and a place in the knockout stages.

Austen Runnals (Luxulyan) & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) were drawn in Group 6 where they faced Sue Pledger & John Pledger (Essex) losing 8-9, Joy Townsend & Graham Tweed (Norfolk) losing 4-15 and Jean Bridges & Peter Arthur (North Yorkshire) winning 12-7.  They finished fourth in the group, missing out on the knockout stages.

Andy Jiggens & Rob D'Agostino (Kensey Vale) were drawn in Group 9 where they faced Brian Barefield & Rob Edwards (Surrey) losing 7-8, Ron Smith & Chris Beard (Oxfordshire) losing 6-15 and Ian Roe & David Watkins (Herefordshire) losing 1-11.  Finishing bottom of the group they missed out on the knockout stages.

Jon Read & Martin Boraston (Duloe) were drawn in Group 16 where they faced Chris Escott & Peter Winter MBE (East Sussex) winning 12-3, Bill Gearing & Toni Gearing (Hertfordshire) losing 7-9 and Chris Davison & Shane Davision (Hampshire) winning 11-6.  The two wins saw them finish second in the group and through to the knockout stages.

In the first round of the knockout stages Sandra & Nigel lost 5-11 to Sue Tuttle & Steve Tuttle (Surrey) and Jon & Martin won by one shot against Mike Wright & Steve Puttock (Hampshire) 8-7.  The second round saw Jon & Martin win comfortably by 12 shots to 3 against Brian Barefield & Rob Edwards (Surrey) to progress to the Quarter Finals where they lost by a single shot to Sue & Steve Tuttle (Surrey).

COUNTY LEAGUES
The four area league titles were decided last week with all four area league titles being retained by the 2022/3 season winners.  Representing each area in the Bebbington Cup will be West - Newlyn Trinity, Central - St Newlyn East Phoenix, East - Duloe and North - Blisland.

UPCOMING EVENTS
There is no local competition action this coming weekend with the dates reserved by the ESMBA for the Inter County Knockout Semi Finals.  The following weekend, the 9th and 10th March will see 42 pairs competing for 8 places in the County Finals for the Four Wood Pairs at Carnmoggas.  The weekend of 16th and 17th March will see the County Titles decided at Carnmoggas with the Fours and Singles on Saturday 16th and Pairs and Triples on Sunday 17th.  Saturday 23rd March sees the County Titles for Two Wood Singles and Four Wood Pairs decided at Carnmoggas whilst for the first time in a number of years Cornwall will be represented in the National Under 18's by Lanteglos's Oskar Bryan.

After Easter Sunday 7th April sees the County League Finals, the Bebbington Cup, County Champion of Champions and County Under 25's singles contested at Carnmoggas.  The following week see's one of the largest groups of players in recent years from Cornwall travel to Melton Mowbray to compete in the National Championships starting on Singles, Pairs, Fours and Triples played on each day respectively from Thursday 11th through to Sunday 14th.

The Short Mat Players Tour season concludes the following weekend with the Open Pairs on Friday 19th and World Masters Singles with an entry of over 200 bowlers played on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st.

INTER AREA LEAGUE
On Saturday the Inter Area League concluded with the third of three match days played at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.  The format sees teams with a minimum of 10 players from each area play across the four disciplines of Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours with each area playing each other on each of the match days.

West started the day ahead on 31 points with Central second on 28, East third on 23 and North on 14.  

Session One saw Central take the overall lead with three wins and a draw against North to move onto 35 points.  West lost the session to East by a scoreline of 3-5 to leave West on 34 and East on 28.

Session Two saw West retake the lead overall with a clean sweep of four wins against North to move onto 42 points.  Central took three wins against East to leave Central a point off the lead on 41 and East on 30.

Session Three saw the two title contenders head to head.  Central won the Singles by a single shot, the Pairs by 5 shots, the Fours by 5 shots and the Triples drew.  This gave Central 7 points from the session to finish on 48 points +61 shots over the three rounds.  West finished second on 43 points +66 shots.  In the session's other match up East took a clean sweep against North to finish on 38 points +74 shots with North finishing on 15 points -201 shots.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The first National Championship titles of the season will be decided this coming weekend with the National Mixed Fours and Over 55's Pairs at Solihull Indoor Bowling Club.  

On Saturday the Mixed Fours sees two teams from Cornwall,  Elise Daniell (Holmans), Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) and Mark Slack, Karen Burton, Caroline Trubshaw and Alan Trubshaw (Duloe).  On Sunday the Over 55's Pairs sees four teams from Cornwall, Austen Runnals (Luxulyan) & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East), Andy Jiggens & Rob D'Agostino (Kensey Vale), Jon Read & Martin Boraston (Duloe) and Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity).  Play starts at 0900 on both days with a round robin competition followed by a knockout.

LOCAL LEAGUES
The local evening leagues are drawing to a conclusion across the county.

In the Western Area Newlyn Trinity need just 1 point from a possible 18 from their last three matches to secure the Western Area title.  Their final matches are on the 20th away to Penlee Pirates, 27th Home of Porthleven Fisherfolk and 4th March away to Penzance Dodos.  Second place is currently held by Helston Penrose on 51 points with Holmans third on 50 points, both teams have two matches remaining.  Penrose face Penlee Larrigan at home on 27th Feb and travel to Penlee Pirates on 5th March.  Holmans complete their fixtures away to Penzance Dodos on 19th Feb and at home to Helston St Johns on 7th March.  In Division One St Ives lead by 8 points with 45 points with two matches to play the first away to Helston Grylls on 22nd Feb before completing their fixtures at home to second placed St Keverne An Gof on 28th Feb.  An Gof have three games to play, the first of which is on the 23rd Feb at home to Helston Wendron.  They then play away to St Ives on the 28th Feb before completing their fixtures at home to Marazion Choughs on 8th March.  Marazion Blackbirds are a point further behind in third place.  The result of their match against Marazion Choughs on 15th Feb is not known at the time of writing, their remaining fixtures are against Redruth at home on 29th Feb and away to Helston Grylls on 7th March.

The Central area concluded this week with two points separating the top two, St Newlyn East Phoenix who conclude their fixtures away to Ladock on 20th February and Withiel Oaks who finish at home to St Agnes Choughs on 22nd February.

In the East area Duloe are 13 points ahead of Saltash Blues with Callington Eagles a further 3 points behind.  Duloe's remaining fixtures are at home to Calstock on 21st Feb and away to Landrake on 26th Feb.  Saltash Blues have an outstanding fixture at home to Landrake and away matches against Callington Eagles on 19th Feb and Calstock on 26th Feb.  Callington Eagles other remaining fixture is away to Dobwalls Blues on 29th Feb.  In Division One Dobwalls Reds lead Saltash Whites by 9 points.  Dobwalls Reds have three matches remaining, an outstanding fixture away to Torpoint , away to Saltash Kernow 2 on 20th Feb and home to Callington Kestrels on 26th Feb.  Saltash Whites remaining fixtures are at home to Torpoint on 21st Feb and away to Saltask Kernow 2 on 25th Feb.

In the North Area, which is played to a different scoring system Blisland lead the way and need 3 points from a possible 12 from there last four games, away to Lanteglos Beavers on 20th Feb, home to Lanteglos Bobcats on 20th Feb, Home to Lanteglos Beavers on 27th Feb and away to Lanteglos Bobcats on 28th Feb.  The matches on 20th Feb count for 2 points each and those on 27th and 28th each count for 4 points with aggregate bonus points up for grabs.  Boscastle are second 9 points adrift and have three matches remaining, each counting for a possible four points.  On 19th Feb they face Wadebridge at home with a 7 shot deficit to overhaul for the aggregate score. On the 21st Feb a visit to Lanteglos to face the Bobcats with the 29 shot deficit from the home match.  Boscastle's final match is away to Lanteglos Beavers on 5th March with a 21 shot advantage to defend.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR ENGLISH MASTERS
Over the weekend five local bowlers travelled to Chelmsford to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters.

David Studden (Holmans) was unbeaten in the group stages with wins against Aaron Clare (ENG) 12-9, Sarah Sarling (ENG) 13-6, Lynn Orlando (ENG) 10-5, Paula Scales (ENG) 12-9 and 
Sioned Ann Owen-Braniff (WAL) 17-8 to top Group One and qualify for the Cup competition.  In the first round of the Cup David defeated Thomas Coles (ENG) 11-8, David's tournament ended in the second round with a narrow defeat to Martin Simcock (ENG) 7-8.  David jumps 110 places in the World Rankings to 93rd place on 222 points and 43 places in the Order of Merit standings to 52nd place on 200 points.

Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) was also unbeaten in the group stages to top Group Fifteen with wins against Alun Thomas (WAL) 19-4, David Hacker (ENG) 10-3, Andrew Cockcroft (IRE) 10-7, Barry Bates (ENG) 14-7 and a draw against Tony Wall (ENG) 10-10.  Steve lost to Chris Mann (ENG) 2-18 in the first round of the Cup knockout.  Steve climbs 71 places in the World Rankings to 86th place on 238 points and 17 places to 43rd in the Order of Merit standings on 238 points.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) topped Group Three on shot difference after 3 bowlers tied on 12 points each taking four wins out of five.  Nigel's wins came against Paul Hutson (ENG) 23-3, Rory Gittoes (WAL) 18-4, Muhammad Zubair (UAE) 35-2, Steve Collins (ENG) 19-5 and a loss against Eroll Morina (SWE) 8-12.  Nigel lost to Martin Simcock (ENG) 4-13 in the first round of the Cup knockout.  Nigel drops a place to fifth in the World Rankings with 791.25 points and maintains fourth in the Order of Merit standings on 491 points.
   
Elise Daniell (Holmans) finished second in Group Twenty on shot difference after three bowlers tied on 9 points taking three wins out of five.  Elise's wins came against Gunn Ellen Bekkevold (NOR) 13-8, Bjarne Andersson (SWE) 13-6 and Sam Moore (IRE) and a couple of losses against Billy Chapman (IRE) 11-14 and Paul Seaman (ENG) 9-10.  Elise lost to Number One ranked Peter Roberts (ENG) 0-17 in the first round of the Cup knockout.  Elise climbs one place to 32nd in the World Rankings with 457.38 points and maintains 22nd place in the Order of Merit standings on 329 points.

Peter Hore (Holmans) finished fourth in tough Group 8 with two wins out of five.  Peter's wins came against Tony McHugh (IRE) 15-10 and John Manley (ENG) 15-5 and losses against Mark Spalding (ENG) 5-17, Alex Kley (ENG) 5-15 and Gary McNabb (IRE) 9-15. In the first round of the Plate competition Peter won 11-10 against Dave Goddard (ENG) before losing in the second round to Nigel Froud (ENG) 25-0.  Peter maintains 39th place in the World Rankings with 396.38 points but drops 9 places in the Order of Merit to 38th to 263.50 points.

The final tournament of the season, the World Masters, takes place over the weekend of 20th and 21st April in Belfast with Nigel, Peter, Elise and Steve currently entered.

INTER AREA LEAGUE
On Saturday the final round of Inter Area League matches will be played at Carnmoggas.  

West lead with 31 points +54 shots, Central are second with 28 points +28 shots, East are third with 23 points +48 shots and North are fourth with 14 points -130 shots.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The following weekend the first National Championship titles of the season will be decided with the National Mixed Fours and Over 55's Pairs.  

On Saturday 24th February Elise Daniell, Sandra Worton, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore and Mark Slack, Karen Burton, Caroline Trubshaw and Alan Trubshaw will be in the Fours.  On Sunday 25th February Austen Runnals & Steve Smith, Andy Jiggens & Rob D'Agostino, Jon Read & Martin Boraston and Sandra Worton & Nigel Nicholls will be in the Pairs.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday 4th February Cornwall's A Team travelled to Solihull to face Norfolk in the first preliminary round of the Inter County Championship knockout competition with a team including a number of changes for that which came through the group stages.

The first session saw both counties win a game apiece in the Singles and Pairs.  The second session again saw points shared in Triples and Fours.  The match was tied at 8 points each at the lunch break.

Norfolk moved up a gear in the afternoon session restricting Cornwall to just 3 further points, a win in the Singles and a draw in the Triples, to win the match 29 points to 11 and 230 shots to 158.

The players representing Cornwall in the match were Steve Williamson (Luxulyan), Mark Williams (Lanteglos), Rita Hancock (Blisland), Leonard Lee (Duloe), John Dodd (St Newlyn East), Carol Dodd (St Newlyn East), Ken Horrell (Withiel), Joyce Harding (Luxulyan), Meg Horrell (Withiel), Alan Trubshaw (Duloe), John Worth (Luxulyan), Graham Luke (Withiel), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls), Tony Jago (Withiel), Eileen Williams (Lanteglos), Heidi Kerr (Landrake), David Topliffe (Boscastle), Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe), Chris Jennings (Lanteglos) & Gill Jennings (Lanteglos).

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR - ENGLISH MASTERS
This coming weekend five local bowlers will be travelling to Chelmsford for the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters competition featuring 192 bowlers from 12 countries.

Current World Number 4 Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) (70.14% wins from 278 games) is drawn in Group 3 where he will face Steve Collins (ENG - Rank 302 - 50% from 6), Eroll Morina (SWE - 67 - 60% from 35), Rory Gittoes (WAL - 52 - 58.70% from 46), Paul Hutson (ENG - 705 - 16.67% from 6) and Muhammad Kamran Rasheed (UAE - Tour debut).  Nigel's match against Eroll Morina is scheduled on the Show Mat at 16.30 on Saturday.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) (43.38% from 219) is currently 33rd in the rankings and is drawn in Group 20 where she will face Billy Chapman (IRE - 101 - 44.26% from 61), Paul Seaman (ENG - 37 - 58.95% from 229), Sam Moore (IRE - 32 - 52.88% from 312), Bjarne Andersson (SWE - 64 - 45.10% from 153 and Gunn Ellen Bekkevold (NOR - 655 - 16.67% from 6).  Elise's match against Sam Moore is scheduled on the Show Mat at 17.20 on Saturday.

Peter Hore (Holmans) (54.59% from 218) is currently 39th in the rankings and is drawn in Group 8 where he faces a tough draw which includes current world number 2 Gary McNabb (IRE - 81.78% from 247), current English, British Isles and World Singles Champion Alex Kley (ENG - 10 - 71.35% from 185), Mark Spalding (ENG - 65 - 39.66% from 58), Tony McHugh (IRE - 501 - 33.33% from 6) and John Manley (ENG -  Tour debut).

Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) (57.89% from 19) is currently 157th in the rankings and is drawn in Group 15 where he face Alan Thomas (WAL - 214 - 16.54% from 133), Barry Bates (ENG - 392 - 41.18% from 51), Tony Wall (ENG - 136 - 65.63% from 32), David Hacker (ENG - 326 - 34.69% from 49) and Andrew Cockcroft (IRE - 105 - 47.28% from 105).

David Studden (Holmans) (72.41% from 29) is currently 203rd in the rankings and is drawn in Group 1 where he will face Aaron Clare (ENG - 90 - 51.85% from 108), Sioned Ann Owen-Braniff (WAL - 349 - 36.67% from 30), Paula Scales (ENG - 522 - 23.08% from 26), Sarah Sarling (ENG - 329 - 31.58% from 19) and Lynn Orlando (ENG - 314 - 35% from 20).

The competition follows the usual players tour format with four rounds of group games played on Saturday and the final round played on Sunday morning. The knockout stages follow through Sunday afternoon into the evening.  Updates will be available throughout the two days on the Short Mat Players Tour website.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS
On 17th February the final round of Inter Area League matches will be played at Carnmoggas.  The following weekend sees the first National Titles of the season decided with the National Mixed Fours on Saturday 24th February and National Over 55's Pairs on Sunday 25th February.
