Short Mat Players Tour - UK Open
Over the weekend 11 bowlers from Cornwall competed in the Short Mat Players Tour UK Open at the Falcon Bowling and Social Club in Chelmsford with mixed fortunes.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) came through the group stages unbeaten to top Group 3 and take a place in the main knockout Cup competition.  In the first round Nigel defeated Bob Naylor 13-3.  The second round saw Nigel face multiple World Short Mat Bowls Council World Champion Stephen Williams (WAL) coming through with a 14-13 win.  The third round saw defeat at the hands of Jonathan Payne (BEL) 9-12.

Callum Beale (Blisland) was the only other local bowler to make it through to the Cup competition topping Group 31 with 4 wins and a draw.  With a bye to the second round Callum came up against eventual Semi-Finalist Stuart McSorley (IRE) losing 5-11.

Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) went through to the Plate competition after finishing third in Group 13 with three wins and two losses.  In the first round Dennis defeated Mitchell Young 11-7.  David Glennerster was up next in the second round and was beaten 13-3.  In the third round Richard Forsythe was beaten 11-10.  In the Quarter Final multiple Players Tour event winner Mark Beattie (IRE) proved too strong winning 12-6 to end Dennis's run in the event.

Luke Jolly (Withiel) was one of three bowlers on nine points in Group 23 but was placed lowest (4th) on the tie break rules and progressed to the Plate competition.  In the first round Richard Palmer (WAL) was defeated 12-10.  In the second round Daniel Winmill  proved too strong winning 5-11.

Peter Hore (Holmans) recorded two wins in Group 31 to be placed fifth and take a place in the Shield competition.  With a bye to the second round Peter made progress through the draw defeating Ian Ford 14-5 in the second round, Chris Duncan (IRE) 11-6 in the third round and Greg Wade 13-3 in the quarter final.  In the semi final 2016 English Masters winner James Bucknell proved too strong winning 12-3.

Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) finished fifth in Group 11 with one win to progress to the Shield competition.  With a bye in the first round, Gill Willis provided second round opposition with Gill winning 5-14.  Bill Crawford (Saltash Kernow)  finished fifth in Group 21 with one win to progress to the Shield competition where defeat came in the first round to Greg Wade 5-11.

None of the remaining local bowlers in the competition recorded wins in the group stages and all went forward to the Shield competition.  Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) progressed the furthest with wins in the first round win against Liz Jones (WAL) 10-6, second round 22-2 against Muhammed Abu Baker (UAE) 22-2 before an 8-18 loss to Aaron Clare in the third round.  Des Pengelly (Landrake) came through the first round of the knockout 11-10 against Mark McHugh 11-10 before a loss in the second round to Chris Hopkins 7-14.  Elise Daniell (Holmans) defeated Armin Stoll (CAN) 18-4 in the first knockout round before losing 5-17 to James Bucknell in the second round.  Glynn Roy won 9-8 against Nigel Marshall in the first knockout round but lost 10-11 in the second round to Aaron Claire.

The tournament winners were Cup - Sam Harvey (WAL) who defeated Dom Reed 11-3.  The Plate went to Tony Bell (IRE) who beat Mark Beattie (IRE) 10-7.  The Shield was won by James Bucknall who defeated Kirsty Hatch (WAL) 13-8.

The next Players Tour event is the Irish Open over the weekend of 16th and 17th September in Belfast.

Summer League
The Summer League competition is drawing to a conclusion with the Newlyn Trinity based Nomads confirmed as winners of the Western section.  The Eastern section still has three weeks to run with the two Blisland teams leading the way with the Blues on 36 points and Reds on 34.  Landrake based Oggies are a further four points behind and still have the top two to play.  All the latest results and remaining fixtures can be accessed by clicking

Short Mat Players Tour UK Open
Over the weekend of 19th & 20th August 10 bowlers from Cornwall will be among the 186 strong entry from 13 countries competing for the Short Mat Players Tour (SMPT) UK Open title at the Falcon Bowling & Social Club, Chelmsford, Essex.  This is believed to be the largest ever for a Short Mat Bowls Singles competition ever held in England.  

The competition will be contested with a Round Robin stage to determine qualification either the Cup, Plate or Shield knockout competitions.  On Saturday four out of five group games are contested with the remaining group match and the knockout competitions played on the Sunday with every game played counting towards SMPT World Rankings and Order of Merit standings. 

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Peter Hore (Holmans), Elise Daniell (Holmans), Luke Jolly (Withiel), Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake), Callum Beale (Blisland) and Glynn Roy (Blisland) all have previous SMPT ranking tournament experience and three bowlers, Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Des Pengelly (Landrake) and Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) make their SMPT debuts at the event.

Nigel is drawn in Group 3 where he faces Armin Stroll (CAN), Aled Edwards (WAL), Steve Killington, Matt Dillon & Nigel Reed.  Elise faces Kirsty Hatch (WAL), John Lax, Thomas Coles, Sam Moss & Bob Naylor in Group 4.  Martin is against Arwel Morgan (WAL), David Chittock, Raf Van Bouchaute (BEL), Chris Jeffery & Paul Seaman in Group 11.  Dennis in Group 13 will face Keith Lackford, Melanie Thompson, John Pajak (POL), Tom Erik Johnson (NOR) and world number one Dimitri Payne (BEL).  Dianne will be against Dennis Hinks, Jack Pye, Ali Akbar (UAE), Sam Harvey (WAL) & Robert Kristiansen (NOR) in Group 19.

Luke Jolly & Glenn Roy are drawn together in Group 23 where they will be against Tone Bøe (NOR), Jack Marshall, Mark Lindsall & Kjetil Grønseth (NOR).  Des Pengelly will play in Group 25 where he faces Tommy Dahlgren (SWE), Mark Chittock, Suzanne Finlay (IRE), Gunnar Frantzen (NOR) & Jim Mannell.  Peter Hore & Callum Beale are drawn together in the last group, Group 31 where they will meet on the Show Mat at approx 1810 on Saturday.  Other opponents in the group will be Emila Thompson, Dave Woods, Steve Buckett & Jonas Häger (SWE)

Forthcoming Events
The English Short Mat Bowling Association host an Open Fours competition on Saturday 9th September at Tamworth Indoor Bowling Club.  Over the weekend of 16th & 17th the SMPT host the Irish Open whilst locally the County Team trials will take place on Sunday 17th.  A squad practice will be held on Saturday 23rd ahead of the first Inter County match of the season on the following day against Somerset at Donyatt Indoor Bowling Club.
