CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 4 November 2012

 

COUNTY PAIRS

 

Over the weekend 47 pairs competed in the qualification competition for the County Pairs at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club, 24 on Saturday and 23 on Sunday.

 

Saturday saw play organised with six groups for four with group winners and two best runners up progressing to a single knockout round.

 

From Group One Marion & John Keers (St Newlyn East) progressed with 6 points +7 shots.  Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) topped Group Two with 6 +19.  Group Three produced two qualifiers, Sheila & Robert Flower (Tintagel) topping the group with 6 +7 after defeating Derek Swaby (Wadebridge) & Stuart Hambly (Camelford) 10-7 leaving them on 4 +17 to take the second runners up spot.  Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) needed a maximum score of four on the last end of their final group game to defeat Ken Moir & Derek Elliott (Holmans) 12-11 to finish on 6 +11 in Group Four.  Group Five went to Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) with 5 +10.  The final group saw Gary Davey (Liskeard) & Martin Boraston (Dobwalls) top the table with the day’s best score of 6 +29.   Jean Welch & WJ James (Marazion) took the first runners up spot with 4 +19.

 

The play offs saw Gary Davey & Martin Boraston defeat Marion & John Keers 11-6.  Jim Rule & Terry Bray edged a tight match against Sheila & Robert Flower 7-6.  Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher defeated Derek Swaby & Stuart Hambly 13-10 and Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls were comfortable 19-3 winners against Jean Welch & WJ James.

 

Sunday saw play organised into five groups with one of six, one of five and three of four and the group winners and three runners up progressing to the knockout.

 

Group One saw Arthur Hambley & Henry Matthews (Withiel) defeat Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls) 10-6 in the deciding game to take top spot with 5 +13.  Brenda & Max claimed a runners up spot with 4 +14.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) were Group Two winners with 6 +24, the days joint top score.  Val & Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) took a tight Group Three with 4 +7.  Group Four produced some high scoring games which saw two teams progress, Richard Brown & David Studden (Illogan) with 4 +23 as group winners and Edward & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) with 4 +22 as runners up.  In Group Five Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) & Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) survived a late comeback from Joe Dixon (Withiel) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) to take top spot with 6 +24 to be joint top points scorers whilst Joe & Keith claimed what proved to be the top runners up spot with 4 +23.

 

In the play-off round Elise Daniell & Peter Hore won a last end decider against Val & Geoff Risdon 9-8.  Brenda Sleep & Max Burden defeated Edward & Brian Wakeley 10-6.  Richard Brown & David Studden won a last end decider against Joe Dixon & Keith Matthews 9-8.  The final game saw Gillian Cawrse and Nicholas Truscott defeat Arthur Hambley & Henry Matthews 14-3.

 

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS

 

On Saturday (10 November) Cornwall’s National Championship hopefuls in the Singles, Fours and Mixed Fours will play at Carnmoggas to determine who goes forward to the National Championship in Bromsgrove at the end of the season.  Play starts at 0900 when the 5 teams in the Fours will play against each other in 5 rounds of games.  Immediately after the 4 teams entered in the Mixed Fours will play from 1200 in three rounds of games.  With all the team play out of the way the 12 entrants in the Singles will play from 1400.

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday (11 November) Cornwall will face Devon at Carnmoggas in the latest round of Inter County Championship fixtures.  The Premier Team will be looking for a strong result against the run away group leaders to keep them in contention for a place in the Main Championship at the end of the season.  Cornwall lead the way in the A Team competition but have seen their lead cut to just 4 points after Somerset defeated Devon 21-19 on November 4th.
