INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall hosted Devon at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club in the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures.
Going into the Premier Team match Devon held a commanding lead at the top of the table, Cornwall’s aim being to score as many points as possible to keep up the challenge for second in the group.
The first session saw the points shared with Nigel Nicholls taking a 15-13 win in the Singles and Richard Brown & David Studden winning 16-12 in the Pairs. The second session again saw the points shared again with wins for Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley 11-4 in the Triples and Kath Goodman, Patsy Wakeley, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 10-5 in the Fours. At the halfway point in the match the score read Cornwall 8 points 86 shots Devon 8 points 82 shots.
The third session saw Devon take an advantage with Nigel Nicholls being the solitary winner for Cornwall with a 13-11 win in the Singles from which Cornwall also took the bonus points. With a session to play Devon led 16 points to 12 and 143 shots to 131. The final session again saw Cornwall again win on just one mat, this time Elise Daniell, Derek Elliot, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher 12-5 in the Fours which also helped to secure the bonus points. Cornwall also claimed a share of the bonus points in the Triples to leave the final match score Cornwall 17 points 168 shots Devon 23 points 183 shots. Cornwall’s score ensuring that to date they have achieved the most points against Devon in the group with 25, Somerset have scored and 20 and Dorset 8 with their away match against Devon still to play. In the days other match Somerset defeated Dorset 26-14.

Cornwall’s A Team started well with three wins in the first session. Luke Jolly winning 17-12 and Martin Boraston coming from 6-12 down to win 16-12 in the Singles. Keith Williams & Mike Widger were 17-14 winners in the Pairs. Cornwall enjoyed an unbeaten second session to take a commanding match lead with wins for Lynne Davey, Gary Davey & Keith Matthews 11-10 and Tony Jago, Joe Dixon & Henry Kendall 9-6 in the Triples. In the Fours Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley were 14-2 winners and Meg Horrell, Dennis Shorthouse, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton won 13-7. At the half way point in the match Cornwall led 14 points to 2 and 103 shots to 82.
The points were shared in the third session with 2 wins apiece. Cornwall’s points scored by Martin Boraston 17-11 in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Pam Williams 16-10 in the Pairs. Cornwall claimed the Singles bonus points to add a further 2 points to the total. With a session to play Cornwall led 20 points to 8 and 155 shots to 134. The final session proved frustrating for Cornwall as Devon claimed three wins, Cornwall claiming 2 points from Tony Jago, Joe Dixon & Henry Kendall with a 16-5 win in the Triples, the margin of win helping Cornwall to claim the Triples bonus points by 1 shot. The strong morning results for the Fours ensured Cornwall also claimed those bonus points. The final match score being Cornwall 26 points 185 shots Devon 14 points 177 shots. The day’s other match saw Somerset comfortably defeat Dorset 32-8 to move 2 points ahead of Cornwall in the table.

In both the Premier and A team competitions Cornwall’s progress into the Main or Consolation championship lies in their own hands when they face Somerset at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club on Sunday 2nd December. The Premier Team need a win and will trust that Devon will show the home form against Dorset that has seen them drop just 10 out of 80 points in home fixtures this year to ensure Main Championship action in the knockout stages of the competition. The A Team need 9 points to ensure progression to the Main Championship and 22 points to secure top spot in the table.
NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
On Saturday qualification competitions were played for the National Fours, Mixed Fours and Singles competitions at Carnmoggas.
First up was the Fours with Cornwall’s three England Squad members Peter Hore, Elise Daniell (Holmans), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) joined by Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) unbeaten to claim the top spot and a guaranteed place at the Nationals. After a close final match John Worton (Ladock), Neil Gribble (Landrake), Ken Horrell (Withiel) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) took second place on shots difference but will have to wait until allocations are confirmed before knowing of they will be travelling to Bromsgrove.
Continuing the theme of Fours the Mixed Fours was played next with Cornwall’s England players, this time joined by Margaret Jenkin (Newlyn Trinity), again taking top spot edging out Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) & Diane & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) on shot difference.
The final competition of the day saw 12 players compete in the Singles split into four groups of three with group winners going into a knockout. Nigel Nicholls was unbeaten in winning Group One. David Studden (Illogan) claimed Group Two on shot difference from Peter Hore and Dennis Shorthouse. Derek Elliot (Holmans) was unbeaten in Group Three and Peter Skinner (Saltash) similarly in Group Four. The semi finals saw David Studden need an extra end to defeat Nigel Nicholls 8-7 and Derek Elliot defeat Peter Skinner 7-6. The final was again decided by a single shot with David Studden defeating Derek Elliot 6-5 for a guaranteed place at the Nationals.
BRITISH ISLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Peter Hore takes on the biggest challenge of his bowling career when he takes his place in the England team for the British Isles Championships at Potters in Norfolk this weekend. Peter becomes only the third Cornish bowler to have competing in the championships following on from Brian George in 1992 and Karen Watson on 2010.
