INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's Premier and A Team’s made the long trip to Northampton on Saturday for the semi finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competitions.

The Premier team defeated competition favourites Shropshire by 22 points to 18 and 161 shots to 157 in a well contested match that saw all Cornwall team members contributing at least a point to the final score.

The first session saw the points shared 4 each.  Peter Hore defeating his England squad counterpart Alan Jones (13-9) in the Singles and Graham Reeves & Nicholas Truscott claiming a  win (14-11) in the pairs scoring Cornwall’s points.  The second session saw wins for both Cornwall Rinks, Elise Daniell, Joe Coups, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (12-1) and Brenda Sleep, Max Burden, Henry Kendall & Chris Roberts (14-8).  Defeats for both Cornwall Triples saw the halfway score read Cornwall 8 points 80 shots Shropshire 8 points 79 shots.

The third session again saw game points shared, Nigel Nicholls winning in the Singles (11-10) and Richard Brown & David Studden in the Pairs (13-9).  Shropshire however claimed the bonus points for the Singles and the Pairs were shared to leave the match score reading Cornwall 13 points Shropshire 15 with a session to play.

First to finish in the final session was the Triple of Henry Matthews, Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp with a draw (9-9).  The next completed game saw Graham Ford, Ken Horrell and Brian Wakeley pick up 2 on the last end of their Triples (14-4) game securing the crucial bonus points by 1 shot making to give Cornwall an 18-16 points lead with the Rinks games still to be completed.  Gerald Fishers rink lost (12-5) leaving Cornwall needing a win on the final mat to secure the overall match win.  After a slow start which saw Chris Roberts’ rink fall 1-5 behind after 5 of the 9 ends, the sixth end saw the game change with Cornwall picking up 4 shots to draw level.  A further 2 on the seventh end moved Cornwall into the lead and a misjudged final wood from the Shropshire skip in the eighth end saw Cornwall claim a further 2 to move 4 in front.  With Shropshire needing 5 to win the game on the final end Cornwall played the jack into the ditch to lie 1 shot to secure the game (10-5) and the match overall.

Cornwall will face South West rivals Dorset, who eased past Northamptonshire 12-28, in Sunday’s final in Northampton.  Cornwall will be keen to add a second victory in the Premier Team Consolation Competition to their 1995/6 season victory.  Two members of the team that defeated Cambridgeshire 24-12 in the 1996 final will be in the Cornwall team for the final on Sunday, Percy Tripp and Graham Ford a third member of the 1996 team Terry Bray is still a regular for the A Team.

COUNTY LEAGUES

The County league program is drawing to a conclusion but many matters remain to be resolved.

In the West three teams remain in what for much of the season has been a four way battle for the title.  Holmans used their game in hand to good effect claiming all six points against Mabe Granites to move four points ahead of Newlyn Trinity Jowsters.  Penzance Comets maintain a mathematical chance.  The title looks set to go down to the last week when Newlyn Trinity Jowsters travel to fourth place Helston Grylls and current leaders Holmans travel to Penzance.  Illogan have secured back to back promotions by winning Division One, any one of five clubs could still join them in the Premier Division next season.  Marazion Swifts have long been confirmed as Division Two winners  but any one of 7 other teams could still join them in Division One next year.

The Central Area title is down to two teams with Withiel Oaks holding a 1 point lead over Ladock Chiefs.  In this final week of fixtures Ladock play first when they visit relegation threatened St Newlyn East on Monday night with Withiel Oaks travelling to third placed Treviscoe Whites on Thursday night.  St Agnes Cuckoos and Withiel Elms have secured promotion from Division One and play each other at Withiel on Thursday night in a match which will determine first and second place.

Dobwalls have claimed the East area title after a solid season where they have dropped just 15 out of a possible 84 points.  Lanreath need just a single point on Wednesday at Callington Falcons to secure the Division One title, should they however fail to score Rilla Mill will have an opportunity to snatch the title on Thursday when they travel to bottom placed Callington Hawks.
