NEWS RELEASE – 18 March 2012

County Finals

Over the weekend the finals of the four major county championships were played at Fowey Community Leisure Centre.

First up on Saturday was the County Singles. In the quarter finals Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Karen Watson (Treviscoe) had a closely contested game with the lead changing hands 5 times with Nigel establishing a 10-8 lead with two ends to play. Karen fought back with successive scores of one to force an extra end which in Nigel picked up two to win the game 12-10. Martin Boraston (Liskeard) established an early lead against Susan Ashton (Saltash) however Susan fought back scoring ten shots over five ends to take the lead by two after seven ends. Martin edged back in front but Susan again fought back securing two on the last end to force an extra end in which Martin claimed two to win 14-12. Graham Reeves (Saltash) established an early lead against Ken Horrell (Withiel) but scores of two and three on successive ends in the middle of the game saw Ken establish a lead he would not relinquish going on to win 9-6. In the final quarter final David Studden (Illogan) was a comfortable 14-3 winner against Peter Hore (Holmans).

In the semi finals Nigel established an early 6-3 lead against Martin but fell behind to successive scores of two, four and one and Martin moved into the lead of the game. Two for Nigel on the final was not enough as Martin progressed to the final, winning 12-11. In the other semi Ken established an early 7-2 lead against David after 6 ends before restricting David to five successive scores of one to level the score and force an extra end in which Ken was able to pick up the one shot needed to win the game and claim a place in the final. Ken scored first in the final before a run of six successive scores put Martin into a lead he would not relinquish going on to win 12-6.

The afternoon session of play saw attention turn to the County Fours. In the quarter finals Marion & John Keers, Jim & Carolyn Stanley (St Newlyn East) edged a close game against Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep, Max Burden & Derek Newton (Dobwalls) 7-6 after Carolyn drew shot on the last end when four shots down. Meg Horrell, Joan Boddy, Norman Ward & Ken Horrell (Withiel) saw off the early pressure from Kath Goodman, Tony Jago, Luke Jolly and Karen Watson (Treviscoe) by picking up eleven shots over four ends, going on to win 12-5. A score of four on the fourth end saw Patsy Wakeley, Graham Luke, Brian Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) move in to the lead against Diane & Dennis Shorthouse, Rachel & Neil Gribble (Landrake) going onto win 9-7. Marilyn Stewart, Henry Kendall (Withiel), Keith Matthews (Blisland) and Arthur Hambley (Withiel) were always in front as they defeated Joe Coups, Bob Wlliams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) 8-5.

In the semi finals the St Newlyn East four skipped by Carolyn Stanley established a 7-0 lead in the opening four ends of their game against Ken Horrell’s Withiel team before going on to win 13-7. The second Withiel team, skipped by Arthur Hambley took full advantage of the ends they scored as they were never lead, winning 9-7 against Chris Robert’s Ladock team despite Chris winning more ends. The final saw the lead change hands several times before successive scores of four and three moved St Newlyn East into a three shot lead going into the last end where Arthur Hambley was only able to pick up a single to leave the final score 10-8 in St Newlyn East’s favour.

On Sunday morning the Pairs were contested. In the quarter finals Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) opened up a 5 shot lead in the early stages against Richard Brown & Bob Williams (Illogan) but this proved to be a game of two halves as the Illogan pairing scored eleven shots to their opponents two over the final 7 ends to claim the game 11-7. Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) & Graham Reeves (Saltash) fought back from an unanswered 6 shot deficit against Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) to win 10-8. Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) benefited from a bye as their opponents were unable to take their place in the line up. The final quarter final game saw Brenda Sleep & Max Burden claim the opening two ends to lead 3-0 against Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) after two ends before Graham and Brian reeled off nine consecutive scoring ends to win 15-3.

In the semi finals the opening half of the game between Richard & Bob and Bill & Graham saw the score read 4-3 in Bill & Graham’s favour after 6 of the allotted 11 ends. Consecutive scores of two and four established an 8-3 lead for Bill & Graham before scores of one and three brought Richard and Bob back into contention with two ends to play. Scores of two and three on the 10th and 11th ends saw Bill & Graham win 13-7. The second semi final was an all Ladock affair with Graham & Brian never headed albeit in a close game eventually coming out as 11-8 winners against Patsy & Chris. In the final Bill & Graham were never headed as they defeated Graham & Brian 11-8 in another close game.

The final title to be determined was the County Triples played on Sunday afternoon. A preliminary round was needed as it had not been possible to complete the original qualification competition due to time constraints at the venue. Alan Holden, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble (Landrake) won a close match against Kath Goodman, Tony Jago & Brian Webb (Treviscoe) 10-9. Betty Bawden, Carol & Graham Ford defeated club mates Pam Williams, Jim & Carolyn Stanley 9-7. Marilyn Stewart (Withiel), Kathy Webb (Treviscoe) & Henry Kendall (Withiel) were 12-9 winners against Lesley Clayton, Christine Kent & Tony Knight (Cubert). Completing the quarter finalists were Lynne Davey, Martin Boraston & Gary Davey (Liskeard) who defeated Julie & Frank Bennett & Esme Stokes (Wadebridge) 10-6.

In the quarter finals Gillian Cawrse (Withiel) & Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) playing with the disadvantage of being a player short due to injury, with no option of a further substitution available to them, opened up a three shot lead against Gary Davey’s Liskeard team but were unable to hold on to the lead as the disadvantage of being two woods short began to tell as Liskeard ran out 11-6 winners. Neil Gribble’s Landrake team took singles on the first two ends against Sheila, Emma & Robert Flower (Tintagel) but saw the next six ends go against them as the Tintagel team opened up a 10-2, a single for Landrake on the ninth end was not enough to take the game into a final end as Tintagel won 10-3. Melba Kitt, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner (Saltash) were 9-2 up after five ends and went on to defeat Henry Kendall’s team 12-5. Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) were never headed as they claimed a 14-5 win against Graham Ford’s St Newlyn East team.

In the semi finals scores of five, one and three on the fifth to seventh ends proved crucial for Gary’s Liskeard team in defeating Robert Flower’s Tintagel team 10-6. The second semi was well contested with Peter Hore’s Holmans team always having the edge over Darren Woolner’s Saltash team as they ran out 12-4 winners, a score line which did not reflect the competitiveness of the game.

The final proved to be scrappy with both teams struggling to come to terms with the mat which displayed some unusual lines. Despite only winning four ends, consecutive scores of three on the fourth and fifth ends proved crucial for Peter Hore’s team as they ran out 8-7 winners.

County Team of Three
Holman’s players Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore are the County Team of Three Champions after defeating Helston’s Percy Tripp, Kay Goddard & Roy Christophers 82-37 over two legs home and away.
