CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE - 16 September 2018

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Somerset for the opening match of the 2018/19 Inter County Championship season.

The Premier Team came away with an 18-22 defeat whilst the A Team returned home with the 16-24 defeat.  Cornwall are next in action on Sunday 7th October when they host Devon at Carnmoggas.  Devon will be coming into the match off the back of heavy defeats to at Dorset, 9-31 in the Premier Team match and 5-35 in the A Team match.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Three local bowlers travelled to Belfast over the weekend to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open.  

Nigel Nicholls won 4 out of 5 games in the group stages to top Group 5 and progress into the Cup competition where he met young Irish bowler Hannah Cochrane in the last 64 losing 5-10 to the youngster who went on to reach the semi finals.

Peter Hore won all 5 group games to top Group 25 and also progress into the Cup competition where he met Irish bowler P J McCrossan in the last 64 losing 4-9.

Elise Daniell won two games in the group stages to come through Group 14 in fourth place and take a place in the Plate Competition. Elise won her last 128 round game against Irishman Billy Taaffe.  in the next round she came up against another Irishman Jordan Rankin losing 7-9.  Rankin went on to reach the final of the Plate Competition.

The trio are next in SMPT action over the weekend of 27th and 28th October in the Norwegian Open where 126 bowlers from across Europe will compete for the title.

Nigel has moved up to second in the SMPT World Rankings, 53.38 points behind leader Jonathan Payne (Belguim).  Peter Hore moves up seven places in the World Rankings to 28th.  Elise Daniell drops 10 places to 133rd in the World Rankings.

In the Order of Merit standings Nigel has moved up to 9th, 42 points off the lead.



COMING UP
There is no local competition scheduled for this weekend, the next competition being match day one of this years Inter Area League on Sunday 30th at Carnmoggas with North v Central and East v West. 

Saturday 29th see's the second ESMBA Open Competition of the season, the Fours, played in the Midlands. No full rinks have entered from Cornwall but some players will be taking part in the competition playing with bowlers from other counties.
