CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 1st December 2013
INTER COUNTY v SOMERSET
On Saturday Cornwall travelled to Taunton Deane Indoor Bowls club to face Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.
The Premier Team, still seeking their first win of the season made a reasonable start in the first session to take a share of the points with wins for Nigel Nicholls (12-11) in the Singles and Graham Reeves & Nicholas Truscott (14-12) in the Pairs. The second session saw Cornwall move into the lead of the match with wins for Richard Brown, Ken Horrell & Neil Gribble (15-4) in the Triples and John Worton, Derek Elliott, Chris Roberts and Percy Tripp (11-5) in the Fours. A draw (6-6) for the second Cornwall Four of Lynn Davey, Joe Dixon, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore left Cornwall 9 points to 7 in the lead at the lunch break.
Cornwall were however unable though to convert the good start into a positive result as the managed just 5 points from the afternoon sessions. The third session saw a solitary point for Cornwall with a draw for Graham Reeves & Nicholas Truscott (11-11) in the Pairs. The final session saw Neil Gribble's Triple (9-5) and Percy Tripp's Four (10-8) complete the double of wins on the day but a number of heavy defeats across all disciplines saw Cornwall fail to pick up any of the eight bonus points on offer. The final match score Somerset 26 points 187 shots Cornwall 14 points 142 shots. With Devon defeating Dorset 28-12 on Sunday Cornwall are almost certain of finishing bottom of the group with the prospect of a potentially expensive preliminary round match in the Consolation knockout competition.
The A Team, who started the weekend on top of the local table also took a share of the points in the first session with wins in the Pairs for Bill Sharp and Brenda Sleep (18-8) and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden (17-9). The points were again shared in the second session with Cornwall claiming both Triples, Meg Horrell, Jim Stanley & Carolyn Stanley (13-9) and Tony Jago, Alan Holden & Gary Davey (8-7).
