CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 5 March 2013

There was no competition action in Cornwall over the weekend following both County Team's recent defeat at the quarter final stages of the Inter County Championship.

AREA LEAGUES

In the West Area Illogan stretched their lead at the top of the table taking 5 points against away to St Ives whilst nearest challengers Newlyn Trinity Jowsters drew 3-3 away to Penlee.  Third placed Helston Grylls slipped to 8 points off the lead with a 5-1 defeat against St Ives Belyers.  In Division One Helston Penrose are assured of the top spot and promotion back into the Premier next season. Penlee B and Helston Wendron and certain of promotion from Division Two.

In the Central Area Treviscoe Whites extended their lead picking up 5 points at St Newlyn East whilst 2nd Place Ladock Chiefs could only manage 2 away to Luxulyan Golds.  Treviscoe host Ladock on the 14th March in what looks likely to be a key match.   Withiel Oaks and Ladock Braves dropped out of contention following defeats away to Lostwithiel and St Agnes Cuckoos respectively.  Relegation matters are confirmed with Perranporth and St Agnes Cuckoos in the bottom two.  St Agnes Gulls will be one of the teams promoted from Division One, Cubert Blues need a point from Tuesday nights home match against Luxulyan Maroons to be assured of second place.

Callington Eagles are the East Area Champions after winning all 6 points away to Calstock last Monday to finish on 60 points.  Saltash Blues won 33-11 at home to Pensilva to finish second on 58 points.  Dobwalls finish a point further back on 57 after a 42-10 win at home to Lanreath.  Landrake are fourth on 53 points after winning 34-8 at home to Duloe.  Lanreath and Pensilva will be relegated to Division One.  Liskeard have won an immediate promotion from Division One and will be joined by Saltash Whites in the top flight next season.

In the North Area Lanteglos were confirmed as champions some time ago with the competition being for the minor places in Division One.  Wadebridge have taken second place on shots difference from Tintagel in third and Altarnun a point behind in fourth.  Boscastle and Stratton B will be relegated to Division Two.  Blisland and Poughill will join the top flight in the North, Wadebridge B missing out on shots difference.

Callington Eagles and Lanteglos will go forward to the County League finals, to be joined by the West and Central champions, on Sunday 14th April at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club starting at 0900.

TWO WOOD SINGLES and FOUR WOOD PAIRS FINALS

A return to local competition action this weekend will see the Two Wood Singles and Four Wood Pairs Finals contested at Carnmoggas on Saturday.  The top eight from qualification competitions earlier in the season will compete for the respective county titles.

The qualifiers for the Two Wood Singles starting at 0900 are Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Graham Ford (St Newlyn East), Ken Horrell (Withiel), Henry Matthews (Withiel), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls), David Topliffe (St Minver), Keith Williams (Penlee) and Peter Hore (Holmans).  Contesting the Four Wood Pairs at 1130 will be Margaret & John Menhenick (Wadebridge), Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Derek Elliott & Mark Eddy (Holmans), Margaret Goodwin & Graham Reeves (Saltash), Joe Dixon (Withiel) & Keith Matthews (Blisland), Diane Williams & Martin Williams (Penlee), Alan Holden & Des Pengelly (Landrake) and Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock)

LOCAL BOWLERS ON NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL STAGE

Moving forward through March the National and International Calendar dominates over the second half of the month with local action confined to a number of clubs own friendly tournaments.

Over the weekend of 16th & 17th March Elise Daniell (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) will be in Dumfries as part of the England Team for the British Isles A Team Championships.  The following weekend, on Saturday 23rd, Elise and Nigel will be joined by Peter Hore (Holmans) and Margaret Jenkin (Newlyn Trinity) in the National Mixed Fours Championships to be played at Bromsgrove Indoor Bowling Club.  Cornwall will not however be represented in the National Under 18's on the following day due to a lack of entries.

After Easter the National Championships take place at Bromsgrove Indoor Bowling Club.  On Thursday 4th April David Studden (Illogan) will take part in the Singles.  The Pairs on Friday 5th April will see Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Peter Hore (Holmans) representing Cornwall.  Saturday 6th April's Fours will see Nigel & Peter joined by Elise Daniell (Holmans) & Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) in one team and John Worton (Ladock), Neil Gribble (Landrake), Ken Horrell (Horrell) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) making up a second Cornwall Team.  On Sunday 7th April Nigel, Peter and Nicholas will compete in the Triples.
