COUNTY MIXED FOURS
On Saturday (7 January) 20 teams competed in the qualification competition for the County Mixed Fours championship at Fowey Community Leisure Centre. The 20 teams were split into 5 groups of four playing a round robin with the 5 group winners and three best runners up claim spots in the finals to be played on 29 January.
Rosemary Curnow, Patsy Wakeley, Chris Roberts and Brian Wakeley (Ladock) claimed Group One with 4 points -2 shots. Group Two saw Joyce Ward (Withiel), Pam Hamley, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) unbeaten with 6 +21. From the same group Leah Sherman, Richard Brown, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) claimed a runners-up spot with 4 +13. In Group Three Margaret Goodwin, Melba Kitt, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner (Saltash) were also unbeaten with 6 +28.
Marion Keers, John Keers, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) claimed Group Four with 4 +28. Margaret Shillaber, Ron Shillaber (Lanteglos), Sheila Flower & Robert Flower (Tintagel) also qualified as runners up with 4 +4. The final group winners were Barbara James (Dobwalls), Marilyn Stewart, Arthur Hambley & Henry Kendall (Withiel) with 4 +6 to top Group Five. John Turner, Edna Cope, Chris Cope and Margaret Turner (Liskeard) completed the qualifiers with 4 +5 from the same group.
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort near Bere Regis to face Dorset in the final group match of the season.
Cornwall’s Premier Team were defeated 28 points and 187 shots to 12 points and 154 shots. Cornwall scored three points in the first session with a win for Richard Brown & David Studden (14-13) and draw for Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (11-11) in the Pairs. The second session saw Cornwall again score three out of a possible eight points, all recorded in the Fours. Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher winning 7-5 and Bill Sharp, Max Burden, Brenda Sleep & Chris Roberts drawing 10-10. Cornwall recorded a solitary win in the third session thanks to Peter Hore (19-5), a large enough margin to also secure the shots bonus points also. Cornwall again only managed a single win in the final session, this time in the Triples for Graham Ford, Pam Williams and Ken Horrell (14-9).

The A Team suffered the worst possible start to the match dropping all for games in the first session of Singles and Pairs. Cornwall claimed a single win in the second session with a win for Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray and Peter Hamley 13-3 in the Fours. Martin Boraston doubled Cornwall’s points tally in the third session with an 18-10 win in the Singles. The final session proved to be Cornwall’s best of the day claiming two games, Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger (12-11) in the Triples and Peter Hamley’s Four completing a double winning 9-6 also securing the bonus points for the Fours. The final score Dorset 30 points 195 shots, Cornwall 10 points 144 shots.
