Newlyn Trinty’s Nigel Nicholls took on the challenge of the inaugural Masters Singles competition at Wye Valley Bowls Club in Surrey over the weekend.  The competition was played to a first to 21 shots format rather than a fixed number of ends or time.

In the group stages Nigel started well with a 21-15 win against Robert Kidd (Ireland) before a heavy defeat at the hands of Chris Mann (Norfolk) 6-21 in the second game left Nigel needing victory from the final group game to ensure progression to the last 32.  Nigel duly earned the victory to progress through to the knockout stages with a 21-14 win over Ben Haulkham (West Sussex).

Derek Johns (Surrey) provided the opposition in the last 32 with Nigel winning 21-15.  A much closer game followed in the last 16 with Nigel edging past Gavin Wood (East Sussex) 21-19 to move through to the Quarter Finals.  Nigel progressed to the Semi Finals with a 21-14 win over Demitri Payne (Belguim) in the quarter finals.  Chris Blackman (West Sussex)  provided the semi final opposition but proved to be game too far for Nigel as he went down to a fighting 18-21 defeat.
