NEWS RELEASE – 23 October 2011

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall have faced Somerset in back to back ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures over the last two weekends, firstly at Taunton on Sunday 16 October with the return at Fowey on Sunday 23.

PREMIER TEAM

Away to Somerset the Cornwall Premier Team were always on the back foot after dropping three out of four games in the first session, Nigel Nicholls in the Singles recording Cornwall’s only win with a score of 17-8.  The second session saw Cornwall again only record a solitary win this time thanks to Elise Daniell, Graham Ford, Gerald Fisher & Chris Roberts 9-6 in the Fours.  At the halfway point Cornwall trailed by 4 points to 12 and 76 shots to 98.

Cornwall’s strongest session of the match came in the afternoon Singles and Pairs with wins in the singles for Nigel Nicholls (24-4) and in the pairs for Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson (12-11) and Richard Brown & David Studden (14-11), Nigel’s margin of victory also secured the bonus points for most shots in the Singles.  Cornwall failed to realise any more points from the match in the final session with both Triples and Fours losing to leave the final score reading Somerset 28 points 185 shots Cornwall 12 points 164 shots.

Going into the return match at Fowey on Sunday (23 October) Team Manager Chris Cawrse made several changed to the formation of the team, primarily in the Triples and Fours where only 5 out of 16 games had been won to date this season.  The first session did not go well for Cornwall with a solitary win recorded by Nigel Nicholls, 13-5 in the Singles.  Peter Hore in the Singles and Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson in the Pairs were both went down by a single shot 13-14 and 14-15 respectively.  The second session was shared with both counties claiming two games apiece.  For Cornwall Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley were 11-5 winners in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Chris Roberts claimed an 8-6 win in the Fours.  At the halfway point the score read Cornwall 6 points 78 shots Somerset 10 points 92 shots.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs proved profitable for Cornwall securing 8 for the 12 points on offer to level the match score at 18-18.  Despite loses for both Singles, the closeness of the games ensured that the shots bonus points were secured.  The Pairs dominated their opponents with Richard Brown & David Studden winning 28-7 and Tony Baldwin & Karen Watson winning 18-9, the margins of victory again ensuring the bonus points were secure.  In the final session the game points were shared with wins for Cornwall recorded by Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 8-7 in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Chris Roberts 13-5 in the Fours, however Somerset claimed both sets of bonus points to secure the match win with a final score of Cornwall 18 points 181 shots Somerset 22 points 170 shots.  With Devon recording a 31-9 win against Dorset on Saturday the result was enough to see Cornwall move off the bottom of the table.

A TEAM

Away to Somerset Cornwall scored 3 points in the opening session of Singles and Pairs recorded by Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (13-13) and Betty Temple-Smith & Pam Williams (15-10) in the Pairs.  The second session saw Cornwall record two draws, both in the Triples, Bob Williams, Joe Dixon & Linda Martin (8-8) and Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall & Mike Widger (9-9).  At the halfway point the match score read Somerset 11 points 92 shots Cornwall 5 points 68 shots.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw Somerset win on all four mats and in the process claim the bonus points in each discipline to lead 23-5 with a session to play.  With the match result already beyond doubt Cornwall enjoyed their best session of the match in the afternoon Triples and Fours recording two wins and a draw.  In the Triples Bob Williams, Joe Dixon & Linda Martin won 17-5 and Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall & Mike Widger drew 9-9 and also secured the bonus points.  Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Martin Boraston & Peter Hamley took an 8-4 win in the Fours.  The final match score read Somerset 28 points 202 shots Cornwall 12 points 128 shots.

The team for the return match at Fowey on Sunday (23 October) saw several changes to the playing order in a bid to find an overall winning team formation.  The first session saw the points shared with Robert Flower claiming a 17-10 win in the Singles and Sheila Flower and Pam Williams winning 17-9 in the Pairs.  The morning Triples and Fours saw Cornwall take the lead in the match with wins for Bob Williams, Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (20-1) in the Triples. Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Martin Boraston & Peter Hamley (14-4) and Meg Horrell, Derek Swaby, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton (10-6) in the Fours.  At the halfway point Cornwall lead by 10 points to 6 and 112 shots to 75.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw Robert Flower complete a double for the day with a 15-11 win in the Singles and Keith Williams and Betty Temple-Smith recover from a morning defeat to win 21-11 in the Pairs.  Strong scoring from Cornwall saw them collect both the bonus points for Singles and Pairs.  The final session, the afternoon Triples and Fours saw wins for both Fours, Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Martin Boraston & Peter Hamley (12-5) and Meg Horrell, Derek Swaby, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton (7-5) in the Fours to ensure the bonus points were secure. Despite defeats for both Triples the bonus points were also secured to leave the final score Cornwall 26 points 202 shots Somerset 14 points 160 shots.

Cornwall’s next fixtures are against Dorset at Fowey Community Centre on Sunday 6 November followed quickly by Devon at the Devonshire Health & Racquets Club in Plymouth on Saturday 12 November.

COUNTY FOURS

On Saturday (22 October) 20 teams competed in the County Fours qualification competition at Fowey Community Leisure Centre.  Up for grabs were 8 places, 5 group winners and 3 runners up, in the County Finals to be played in March.

Marion Keers, Jim Stanley, John Keers and Carolyn Stanley(St Newlyn East) took an 11-10 win the deciding game of Group 1 against Ivor Curnow, Richard Brown, Barry Kessell and David Studden (Illogan) to finish on an unbeaten 6 points +11 shots.  Dianne Shorthouse, Rachel Gribble, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble (Landrake) claimed Group 2 with 5 +15 with Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep, Max Burden and Derek Newton (Dobwalls) claiming a runners up spot with 5 +11. 

Group Three saw three teams finish on 4 points with a shots difference of +14 seeing Marilyn Stewart, Henry Kendall, Arthur Hambley and Dave Griffin (Withiel) take top spot ahead of Joe Coups, Bob Williams, Linda Martin and Gerald Fisher (Illogan) with +8 who claimed the final runners up spot.  Group 4 went the way of Patsy Wakeley, Graham Luke, Brian Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) with an unbeaten 6 +7.  Group Five saw Meg Horrell, Joan Boddy, Eric Boddy and Ken Horrell finish with 6 +11 to take the group win after defeating Kath Goodman, Tony Jago, Luke Jolly & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) 10-6 in the final group game. The Treviscoe team also qualified for the finals with a final score of 4 +28.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

The next action will be over this weekend when the County Pairs qualification competition will be contested over two days with 24 pairs on each day competing for the 8 places available in the County Finals to be played in March.
