CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 25 September 2011

 

ESMBA Inter County Championship

 

On Sunday (25 September) Cornwall hosted Devon in the first round of ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures at Fowey Community Leisure Centre with Devon coming out on top in both the Premier and A Team games.

 

With Cornwall’s bowlers having to contend with both a new venue and new playing mats Devon started much the stronger team in the Premier Team match claiming a clean sweep in the Singles and Pairs.  Cornwall fared much better in the second session with three wins from the four games.  David Griffin, Brenda Sleep and Max Burden (12-9) and Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (15-11) in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Graham Ford and Chris Roberts (11-8) in the Fours.  At the halfway point in the match Cornwall trailed 6 points to 10 and 83 shots to 97.

 

The third session saw a much stronger performance from Cornwall’s Singles with Peter Hore (18-5) and Nigel Nicholls (16-9) claiming commanding victories over their opposition with the margin wiping out the deficit from the morning session to secure the two bonus points on offer.  A further two points were claimed by Tony Baldwin and Karen Watson (15-14) in the Pairs, Devon however claimed the Pairs bonus points.  With a session to play the score read Cornwall 14 points 142 shots Devon 14 points 138 shots.

 

With the match finally balanced Cornwall could however only manage one win in the final session of Triples and Fours, Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (12-9) in the Triples.  Cornwall however claimed the bonus points from the Triples to leave the final match score reading Cornwall 18 points 178 shots Devon 22 points 177 shots.

The A Team looked to be heading for a heavy first session loss before strong comebacks from both Singles players Robert Flower (17-14) and Terry Bray (12-11) saw the session shared.  The second session saw Cornwall record three points from the eight on offer, Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger (12-8) in the Triples and Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Martin Boraston & Peter Hamley (9-9) in the Fours.  Halfway through the match Cornwall trailed 7 points to 9 and 77 shots to 101.

 

Devon further extended their lead in the match during the third session, claiming five points to Cornwall’s three.  Terry Bray completing an unbeaten day in the Singles with a 13-13 draw and Tony Jago and Luke Jolly recovering from a heavy defeat in the morning to take an 11-9 win in the Pairs.  Going into the last session the score read Cornwall 10 points 119 shots Devon 18 points 151 shots.  The final session saw Cornwall only able to muster a further two points thanks to Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger’s 15-9 win in the Triples leaving the final score as Cornwall 14 points 156 shots Devon 26 points 187 shots.

Ahead of the next match away to Somerset on Sunday 16 October the team management will have some thinking to do as they seek a winning formula.

 

Local Leagues

 

Local league action gets underway as we move into October with the competition again split into four areas; West, Central, North and East.

 

England Ladies Match

 

Elise Daniell (Holmans) travels to Bedfordshire this weekend to take her place in the England Ladies Team taking on an Irish Ladies team in the first match of its kind for the ESMBA. 

 

Masters Singles

 

County Singles player Nigel Nicholls  (Newlyn Trinity) travels to the Wey Valley Indoor Bowls Club in Guildford, Surrey to take on the challenge of the Masters Singles, a new competition on the Short Mat Bowls Calendar featuring players from England, Belguim, Sweeden and Ireland.  Nigel faces Ben Haulkham (Eng), Robert Kidd (Ire) and Chris Mann (Eng) in the group stages.
