NEWS RELEASE – 18 September 2011

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Following the County Trials and Team Practice Days over the weekend a team of 40 bowlers to represent Cornwall in the first Inter County match of the season against Devon on Sunday (25 September) has been selected.  The match takes place at Fowey Community Centre and gets under way at 11am.

Cornwall’s Premier Team will be looking for an improvement on last year’s performance in the groups stages when they averaged just over 16 out of a possible 40 points in each game, finishing bottom of the south west group with 98 points.  Cornwall subsequently went out of the consolation knockout competition with a heavy 33-7 defeat in the quarter finals against Hampshire.

The A Team start the season as defending A Team Consolation Champions having won last year’s championship scoring 10 out of 12 points in the final session in the final against Hampshire to win 21-19 and claim Cornwall’s 3rd title in the past 5 seasons.  In the group stages last year Cornwall averaged 21 points a game to see them finish third in a tight group just 7 points behind group winners Somerset.

At the time of writing the final team selection is not known.

ENGLAND WEEKEND

Holman’s bowler Peter Hore enjoyed a successful weekend with the England squad recording 8 wins out of 8 over the two days, playing in various team positions and disciplines.

The England Team recorded a 62 points to 10 points win over the Presidents Select Team on Saturday.  The match, which brings together a team of made up primarily of volunteers who put in many hours of hard work to keep the sport running, is one of the practice games for the full England squad in the run up to the major championships.  Two local bowlers were invited this year, Elise Daniell and Nicholas Truscott, from the Holmans Club.  Both were placed into Fours with bowlers from other counties each playing two games against England squad members.  Elise’s team enjoyed two well contested games but went down to narrow defeats on both occasions.  Nicholas’s team were defeated in the morning session but came back in the afternoon to record 2 of the President’s teams 10 points by defeating the two times National Championship winning four of Warwick France, Allan Williams, Chris Shakeshaft and Chris Williams 9-7 despite dropping a score of five on one end.

On Sunday the England Team defeated both Cheshire and Kent by 24 points to 8.  The England Ladies team, which includes Elise Daniell, continued their preparation for the International Match v Ireland over the weekend of 1st & 2nd October with a 16-16 draw against a select team.
