ESMBA National Championships

Day One (Thursday) - Singles

Cornwall were represented on day one of the ESMBA National Championships by Karen Watson (Holmans) in the Singles.

In the group stages Karen's first game saw her up against Dane Rose (Wiltshire) losing out 10-11. Karen's second game saw her defeat two times ESMBA Singles Champion (1995 & 1999) David Coultas (Humberside) 11-9. The final group game saw Karen take a comfortable 23-3 win against Ruth Reason (Warwickshire) to qualify for the last 32.

In the first knockout round Karen was drawn against Adam Dickson (Oxfordshire). Karen progressed through to the next round with an 11-6 victory. Karen's run in the competition came to an end in round three (Last 16) with a narrow 11-12 defeat to Dorset's David Glennister.

Day Two (Friday) - Pairs

Cornwall were represented by Karen Watson (Holmans) & David Studden (Illogan) and Mike Widger & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) in Friday's Pairs Competition.

In the group stages Karen & David started the day with a 12-4 win over Barry Brindley & David Harris (West Midlands). They were on the wrong end of an 8-7 score line in their second game against Richard Payne & Jamie Watkiss (Worcestershire). The final group game also ended in defeat, 5-11, against Julian Bradbury & Steve McAllister (Oxfordshire) but the score saw Karen & David through to the second round with 2 points +1 shots.

In the second round Trevor & Ben Pay (Hampshire) provided the opposition in a tight match which the Cornwall pairing just edged 7-6. Round three opposition was provided by Gill Johnson & Stewart Minchew (Gloucestershire) who were brushed aside 18-2 as Karen and David progressed to the Quarter Finals where Chris & Dan Blackman (West Sussex) provided the opposition. The West Sussex pairing moved into an early 4-0 lead before Karen & David hit back to level the score at 7-7 going into the last end. During the last end Karen bowled a front toucher with her first bowl to hold a strong position and the shot stayed in place until the last bowl of the game from Dan who pushed the jack through to another West Sussex bowl to claim the game 8-7.

Cornwall's second pairing of Mike Widger & Kevin Williams recorded three defeats in the group stages to go out of the competition at the first stage.

Day Three (Saturday) - Fours

In Saturday's Fours competition Karen & David were joined by joined by Peter Hore (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity). The team started well with a 9-4 win over Norfolk 3 and followed up with a 9-6 win over East Sussex 1. With 4 points and +8 shots Cornwall led the group going int0 the last round of games where North Yorkshire 2 provided the opposition. North Yorkshire claimed the game 10-6 which saw them move onto 4 points and +7 shots. East Sussex 1's 11-6 win over Norfolk 3 saw them move to 4 points +5 shots and edge out Cornwall who finished with 4 points +4 shots.

Day Four (Sunday) - Triples

For Sunday's Triples competition Peter and Nigel were joined by Nicholas Truscott (Holmans). Their first game saw them drawn against Cheshire 1, the team who ended the same Cornish teams run in last year’s championship at the Quarter Finals stage. Cornwall gained revenge for last year’s result with a comfortable 12-4 victory. A narrow 6-8 defeat in the second game against Essex 1 meant that victory was needed in the final game against Humberside 1. Cornwall duly delivered with a 13-4 win to progress to the knockout stages.

The second round draw saw Cornwall up against Wiltshire 2 skipped by former Cornwall county player Geoff Lane. The Cornish trio did not settle into the game as well as they had done earlier in the day and Wiltshire progressed with an 8-5 win.

The CCSMBA Annual General Meeting takes place this coming Sunday at Luxulyan Village Hall at 1430.
