COUNTY FINALS
The Cornwall County Short Mat Bowls Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours titles were decided over the weekend at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.
First up on Saturday was the County Singles. In the Quarter Finals Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) defeated Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) 12-7 to set up a Semi Final against Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) who was an 11-9 winner against Jean Roper (Dobwalls). Joyce Ward (Withiel) claimed an 8-7 victory against Peter Hore (Holmans) to claim a Semi Final spot against Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) who defeated David Studden (Troon) 9-7.
In the Semi’s Thomas defeated Ford 9-6 with Baldwin taking a comfortable 12-4 win against Ward. The final saw Baldwin make the first score with 1 on the first end before Thomas scored on the next two ends to move into a 3-1 lead. Consecutive scores of 2, 2 and 3 over the next three ends saw Baldwin move into a lead he would not relinquish eventually winning 15-10 with an end to spare.
On Saturday afternoon attention turned to the County Fours. The Quarter Finals saw Melba Kitt, Margaret Goodwin, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner (Saltash) secure 9-7 win with the last wood of the game against Elise Daniell, Peter Sully, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans). John Dollery, Nigel Jelbert, Malcolm Furneaux & Mike Jefferies (Penlee) claimed a comfortable 12-5 win against Marion Davies, Barbara Swaby, Mary Moynihan & Derek Swaby (Wadebridge). Sheila Hodge, Tony Baldwin, Derek Newton & Peter Spargo (Liskeard) were 14-5 winners against Sheila Collins, Pam Williams, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East). The last quarter final saw Henry Kendall, Joe Dixon, Joan & Eric Boddy (Withiel) come from 8-2 down to defeat Dave Abbiss, Peter Moyle, David Griffin & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) 13-11.
Two close Semi Finals saw Penlee defeat Saltash 7-6 and Liskeard defeat Withiel 10-8. The final saw Penlee strike the first blow with 1 on the first end with Liskeard responding with scores of 1, 2 and 1 to move into a 3 shot lead after 4 ends. Scores of 1, 1, and 2 saw Penlee back into the lead 5-4 after 7 ends. The eighth end proved critical to the final result after a misdirected wood from Jefferies moved the jack back to a cluster of opposing woods resulting in Liskeard picking up 5 shots, a further 2 to Liskeard on the ninth end saw them move into a 6 shot lead with an end to play. Penlee claimed 4 shots on the final end to make the final score Penlee 9 Liskeard 11.
First up on Sunday was the County Pairs. In the Quarter Finals Tony Baldwin & Peter Spargo (Liskeard) continued their form from Saturday with a comfortable 17-6 win against Kevin Williams & Mike Widger (Porthleven) setting up a Semi Final against David Griffin (Lostwithiel) and Norman Ward (Withiel) who defeated Marion & John Keers (St Agnes) 14-6. Val & Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) claimed an 11-5 win against Mark Albon & Ted Pentland (Luxulyan) to claim a Semi Final place against Graham Sleep & Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) who edged out Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) and John Thomas (Penzance) 9-7.
In the Semi Finals Baldwin & Spargo took a comfortable 15-1 win against Griffin and Ward to set up a final against the Risdon’s who were 11-8 winners against Sleep & Sharp. In the final first advantage went to the Risdon’s with 2 on the first end with Baldwin & Spargo claiming 1 on the second and 2 on the third ends to move in front. Consecutive scores of 1, 3 and 1 put the Risdon’s 7-3 in the lead after 6 ends. The next six ends all went the way of the Liskeard pairing picking up 13 shots to move 16-7 in front with 3 ends to play. A shot apiece on the thirteenth and fourteenth ends left Baldwin and Spargo with an unassailable 17-8 lead to claim the title.
The County Triples rounded off the weekend of final action on Sunday afternoon. The quarter finals saw Pam Hamley (Lostwithiel), Carol & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) win 7 out of 10 ends to defeat Phil Hicks (Luxulyan), Gillian & Chris Cawrse (Lostwithiel) 10-9 to progress to the Semi-Finals. John Thomas (Penzance), Margaret Jenkins & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) took a 12-9 win against Bob Williams, Joe Coups & David Studden (Troon). Melba Kitt, Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner (Saltash) claimed a maximum 6 score on route to a 14-10 win over Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) & Brian Wakeley (Luxulyan). Joe Dixon, Joan & Eric Boddy (Withiel) received a bye to the Semi Final as a result of opponents not being available to play the finals.
In the Semi Finals Thomas, Jenkins and Nicholls took earned a 9-6 win against Hamley, Ford & Ford despite only scoring on the 4 of the 10 ends. The second Semi Final was a close affair with the Withiel triple edging out Saltash 10-9 in a last end decider. In the final Nicholls’ trio scored 3 on the first end with Withiel responding with 2 on the second. A single to Nicholls on the third end was followed up with consecutive scores of 1 and 2 to leave Withiel 5-4 in front after 5 ends. The sixth end saw Nicholls take a score of 4 to retake a lead that would not be relinquished again in the game. Two singles to Withiel on ends 7 and 8 brought them back to within 1 point but consecutive scores of 1, 3, 1, 3 and 1 over the next 5 ends saw Thomas, Jenkins & Nicholls take control of the match. Withiel scored a consolation 2 shots on the fourteenth end to leave the final score Thomas, Nicholls & Jenkins 17 – 9 Dixon, Boddy & Boddy.

A break from County action this weekend with Western Division competitions taking centre stage.
On Saturday morning club Singles champions from across the Western Division will compete in the Champion of Champions competition which is followed in the afternoon by the Top Team final between to be contested by Holmans and the winners of Monday night’s match between Troon Tryers and Penzance Comets.
