CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE 8th FEBRUARY 2009

Inter Area League

The 2008/9 Inter Area League winners were decided on Saturday (7th February) at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin.

The East v North match started with a shared first session, East claiming a shots advantage 46-38. The second session again saw the points shared but North overturned the shots deficit to leave the halfway score at East 8 points 84 shots North 8 points 96 shots.

The third session saw East take an advantage in the match winning three games and strong scoring also saw the shots advantage reclaimed to leave the score at East 14 points 141 shots North 10 points 125 shots. The final session saw the North take a session advantage but not enough to overhaul the deficit leaving the final score, after addition of bonus points for most shots, to read East 21 points 188 shots North 15 points 180 shots.

The West proved too strong for the Central, dropping just 6 points in the whole match. The morning sessions saw the West claim all four mats in the first and three in the second to leave the score at the halfway point Central 2 points 81 shots West 14 points 107 shots. The third session saw a further clean sweep for the West to leave the score at Central 2 points 116 shots West 22 points 157 shots. The final session saw Central claim the two triples games with West taking both pairs to leave the final score at Central 6 points 161 shots West 30 points 206 shots.

The dominant result ensured that West overhauled Central in the final table to see them claim the title for a fourth time in six year.

Four Wood Pairs and Two Wood Singles Finals

The first finals of the season were contested on Sunday at the Dragon Centre, Bodmin.

In the Quarter Finals of the Four Wood Pairs Camilla Cawrse & Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) were 7-5 winners against Barbara James & Miriam Barbery (Dobwalls). Melba Kitt & Darren Woolner (Saltash) defeated Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 10-7. Joe Coups and David Studden (Troon) claimed an 18-7 win over Roy Christophers & Percy Tripp (Helston) and Jean Roper & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) were 11-10 winners against Margaret Jenkins & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity).

The Semi Finals saw Camilla Cawrse & Phil Hicks claim a 13-6 win over Melba Kitt & Darren Woolner and Joe Coups & David Studden defeat Jean Roper & Brenda Sleep 7-4. The 15 end final went the way of Joe Coups & David Studden defeating Camilla Cawrse & Phil Hicks 12-9.

The Quarter Finals of the Two Wood Singles saw Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) a 14-8 winner over Bill Sharp (Dobwalls). Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) took a 16-8 win over Jean Roper (Dobwalls). Peter Hore (Holmans) defeated Bob Williams (Troon) 18-4 and Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) completed the Semi Final line up with a 14-3 win over Norman Ward.

The Semi finals saw Nigel Nicholls defeat Tony Baldwin 14-6 and Brenda Sleep defeat Peter Hore 10-9. Nigel Nicholls claimed the title defeating Brenda Sleep 14-9 in the final.
