CORNWALL SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 22nd FEBRUARY 2009

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s Premier & A teams travelled to Wincanton on Sunday to compete in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition.

The Premier Team faced Gloucestershire and started well taking an advantage in the first session courtesy of wins in the Singles for Dave Studden (12-11) and Pairs for Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (18-12) and a draw in the other singles game for Nigel Nicholls (13-13). Cornwall took control of the match in the second session taking wins on all four mats. Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (11-9) and Una Prideaux, Joe Coups & Gerald Fisher (13-3) in the Triples. Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (12-6) and Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Brian Wakeley & Chris Roberts (8-6) in the Fours to leave the halfway score reading Gloucestershire 3 points 76 shots Cornwall 13 points 100 shots.

Three wins in the third session saw Cornwall pass the 21 points needed to secure the overall match win with a session to spare. The points recorded by Nigel Nicholls (12-10) in the Singles, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (20-6) and Geoff Lane & Bill Sharp (16-8) in the Pairs. Two bonus points for most shots in the Pairs also went to Cornwall. The final session saw Cornwall take a solitary win courtesy of the Triple of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (12-7). The bonus points were also secured by the Triples for Cornwall to leave the final match score at Gloucestershire 15 point 159 shots Cornwall 25 points 186 shots.

Cornwall will face Shropshire, the county who have knocked them out of the competition in the past two seasons (2008 - Cornwall 9 points 153 shots Shropshire 27 points 217shots, 2007 - Cornwall 8 points 160 shots Shropshire 28 points 209 shots), in the Semi Finals at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton on Saturday.

The A Team came up against Buckinghamshire. A tight first session saw the points shared with wins for Cornwall recorded by Peter Spargo (21-5) in the singles and Joyce Ward & Miriam Barbery (12-11) in the Pairs. Cornwall opened up an advantage in the second session with three wins courtesy of Robert Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (21-6) and Pam Hamley, Jean Roper & Peter Hamley (11-6) in the Triples and Camilla Cawrse, Tom Rigler, Chris Cawrse & Phil Hicks (10-3) in the Fours. The match score at the halfway point read Buckinghamshire 6 points 76 shots Cornwall 10 points 96 shots.

The third session again saw the points shared with Peter Spargo (11-8) in the Singles and Carolyn Matthews and Pam Williams (18-5) in the Pairs recording Cornwall’s points. The fourth session saw three wins come the way of Cornwall to secure the match win. Points were recorded by Robert Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (9-6) and Pam Hamley, Jean Roper & Peter Hamley (10-6) in the Triples and Sheila Hodge, Tony Jago, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (18-4) in the Fours. Cornwall also secured the bonus points for shots in the Singles, Triples and Fours to leave the final match score at Buckinghamshire 14 points 150 shots Cornwall 26 points 195 shots.

Cornwall will now face Northamptonshire in the Semi Finals at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton on Saturday.

AREA LEAGUES

The first Area League title of the season has been decided with Tintagel taking the North Area title for the first time.

Competition remains tight in the other areas with a number of outcomes still possible. The Western Division seems to have come down to three contenders with Newlyn Trinity, Holmans and Penlee in the top three places. Four teams are still in contention in the Central Area, Withiel Elms, Lostwithiel, Luxulyan Golds & St Newlyn East. The Eastern Division sees Landrake, Dobwalls, Calstock, Saltash and Duloe all still in contention of the title.
