CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE - 18 SEPTEMBER 2022

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall's Premier Team will travel to the Riverside Indoor Bowling Club in Winchester to take on Hampshire in the first of six matches in the group stages of the English Short Mat Bowls Association Inter County Championship.  Cornwall last faced Hampshire in a Quarter Final match in 2011 with Hampshire winning on that day.  

Cornwall's team for the match is

SINGLES Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Peter Hore (Holmans)
PAIRS Graham Reeves (Landrake) & Steve Smith (St Newlyn East), Treeve Pollard (Holmans) & Davis Studden (Holmans)
TRIPLES Elise Daniell (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) & Martin Boraston (Duloe), Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) & John Worton (St Newlyn East)
FOURS Austen Runnalls (Luxulyan), Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe), Alan Trubshaw (Duloe) & Mark Payne (Penzance), Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East), Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake), Max Burden (Blisland) & Keith Matthews (Blisland).

The competition takes on a new format this year with Cornwall one of eight counties in the Premier One competition with Devon and Dorset also in Group 1.  Kent, Esssex, West Midlands and Norfolk amake up the eight in Group 2.  The top two from each group will progress to a knockout competition to determine the English County Champions whilst the two counties finishing fourth in there respective groups will play off with the losing team relegated to the Premier Two competition for the 2023/24 season.  Other rule changes see matches start at 1030, no pre game roll ups and no longer a need to nominate top eight players.    

Cornwall's A Team will play their first match in two weeks time when both teams travel to Dorset.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR

Over the weekend three local bowlers travelled to Belfast to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Irish Open.

Nigel Nicholls enjoyed a solid day one winning all three games played, 15-4 against Kenny McClintock (IRE), 11-4 against Valerie Witherow (IRE) and 7-4 against Charlie Clarke (IRE).  Sunday morning saw Nigel confirm top spot in Group 6 with an 8-8 draw against Joel Hager (SWE), a match which can be viewed here
Nigel lost in the first round of the knockout competition to Raymond Stubbs (IRE) 2-12.

Elise Daniell had a mixed first day with defeat in her first two games against Andy Ritchie (IRE) 4-13 and Joseph Beattie (IRE) 2-15.  Saturday afternoon a reversal of fortunes with wins against Stephen Cupples (IRE) 20-2 and Olle Backgren (SWE) 15-3.  These results left Elise third in Group 4 and a place in the Plate competition where she lost in the first round to Alan McCoombe (IRE) 5-11. 

Peter Hore found himself on the wrong end of a number of close results through Saturday losing all four games played, 6-7 to Alex Tymon (ENG), 7-8 to Fred George (SCO), 6-11 to Mark Chittock (ENG) and 9-11 to Andy Howard (IRE).  Sunday morning saw Peter against the number 1 ranked player Mark Beattie (IRE) losing 1-18.  Peter went into the Shield competition where he lost in the first round to Mildred Conium (IRE) 5-12.

Changes to World Rankings and Order of Merit points were not available at the time of writing.

The trio are joined by David Studden in the entry for the next SMPT event, the Norwegian Open over the weekend of 22nd and 23rd October.
