INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The Cornwall Short Mat Bowls county squad players have again showed their commitment to the county team with a 500 mile round trip for the second consecutive weekend.  The Premier Team's run in the ESMBA Inter County Championship however came to an end in Sunday's Semi Finals with an 18-22 defeat to Norfolk at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

Cornwall won three of the four games in the first session with Nigel Nicholls and James Smith winning 13-7 and 21-10 respectively in the Singles.  Elise Daniell and Peter Hore won 15-8 in the Pairs.  The second session saw the points split 4 points apiece.  In the Triples John Worton, Sandra Worton and Chris Roberts won 16-11 and in the Fours Rose Dyer, Nathan Waters, Gillian Cawrse and Luke Jolly won 9-4.  Cornwall led by 10 points to 6 at the halfway point.

The third session saw Cornwall take 4 out of a possible 12 points with Nicholls winning 15-11 in the Singles and Cornwall taking the Singles bonus points to leave the match tied 14 apiece going into the last session.  Cornwall again only won one game in the final session, Jolly's four winning 15-11 and the fours took the bonus points.  Norfolk took the remaining three games and took the Triples bonus points to win the match 22 points to 8 and 205 shots to 176.  Norfolk will face West Midlands in the final on 17th March after they defeated Dorset 31 points to 9.

Cornwall have enjoyed a good run in the competition in the last three years, reaching the final in 2017 and semi finals in 2018 and 2019.  The 2019-20 season will see just 17 teams competing in the Premier section, with all based in the Midlands and south thereof.

Triples - Bob Smith (Praa Sands), Mark Payne (Penlee) & Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) 7-16 and 11-12; John Worton, Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 16-11 and 5-24
Fours - Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Nathan Waters (Withiel), Gillian Cawrse (Newlyn Trinity) and Luke Jolly (Withiel) 9-4 and 15-11; Graham Reeves (Saltash), Richard Kerr, Neil Gribble (Landrake), and Callum Beale (Withiel) 8-11 and 6-9

COUNTY FINALS
On Saturday a number of the bowlers who featured in Sunday's Inter County defeat were chasing individual honours in the first of the County Finals at Carnmoggas.

First up was the Two Wood Singles where in the Quarter Finals David Topliffe (Boscastle) defeated Des Pengelly (Landrake) 15-8.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) won 12-8 against Antony Smith (Luxulyan).  Alan Holden (Landrake) won 10-7 against Bob Banks (Boscastle) and Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Callum Beale (Blisland) 10-7.

In the Semi Finals Reeves defeated Topliffe 10-5 and Holden defeated Thomas 13-6.  Holden won the final 11-8.

Saturday afternoon saw the Four Wood Pairs title decided.  In the Quarter Finals Richard Kerr and Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) defeated Kevin Williams and Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) 11-5.  Max Burden and Keith Matthews (Blisland) won 10-2 against Caroline and Alan Trubshaw (Duloe).  Peter Skinner and Graham Reeves (Saltash) defeated Heidi Kerr and Gary Davey (Landrake) 9-7.  Sandra and John Worton (St Newlyn East) eased past first time county finalists Leonard Lee and John Read (Duloe) 18-1.  

The Semi Finals saw Kerr and Shorthouse defeat Burden and Matthews 9-5 and the Wortons win 9-3 against Skinner & Reeves.  The final went to and extra end where the Wortons picked up a score of 3 to defeat Kerr and Shorthouse 9-6.

INTER AREA MATCH
This Sunday see's 128 bowlers converge on Carnmoggas for the annual Inter Area Match where each area puts up a team of eight rinks who play each other during the day.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR EUROPEAN OPEN PAIRS
This weekend a small group of local bowlers travel to Herentals in Belgium for the Short Mat Players Tour European Open Pairs.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) are drawn in Group B and Elise Daniell (Holmans) has teamed up with Dorset's Alex Kley in Group H.

The group stages will see eight teams in each group guaranteeing each pairing at least seven games in the tournament.  The top four from each group will go into the Cup Knockout and remaining pairings will play a Plate competition.

Full results will be available on the Short Mat Players Tour website throughout the two days.
