SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR - PLAYERS' PLAYER OF THE SEASON

The 2017-18 season has finished, the players have cast their votes and now, with great pleasure, we can reveal that the winner of the SMPT Players' Player of the Season is…

Nigel Nicholls (England): Players' Player Of The Season 2017-18

A very impressive 81.13 win percentage has helped Nigel have arguably his best season yet. Beginning the year at No.42 in the World Rankings, a Last 16 appearance at the UK Open started his climb to the summit. Further Cup qualification at both the Irish & Norwegian Opens saw Nigel take great form to York for our first British Open. Some impressive bowling from the man from Penzance, Cornwall helped him take his first SMPT title. There was another medal at the very next event, this time a bronze at the English Masters. A strong showing at the World Masters also helped Nigel finish top of the Order of Merit and a career high of No.4 in the World Rankings. Nigel also managed three Cup runs in the pairs events he entered, finishing 23rd in the pairs rankings.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR - WORLD  CUP
On Friday 24th August the Short Mat Players Tour (SMPT) host the season opening World Cup Competition in Chelmsford.  Ten teams compete, made up of the top four points scorers for each country in the Order of Merit standing from the preceding season.  The teams are drawn into a round robin competition followed by Semi Finals and a final.

England are in Group A where they face Scotland, Norway, Wales & a Rest of the World team.  Group B includes Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Isle of Man & United Arab Emirates.

The Short Mat Players Tour website writes; "England come back as top seeds once again and they will be in with a good chance of improving on their two previous runners-up spots. Returning from last year are World No.1 Stephen Proctor and ESMBA National Singles Champion James Trott. It's a return to the team after a two year absence for World No.5 Dom Reed and captaining the side this year is Order Of Merit winner and Players Player Of The Year, Nigel Nicholls.

Can the English quartet turn their incredible form from last season into more silverware and capture England's first World Cup title? If everything goes to form a semi-final match up with either Sweden or Belgium looks likely. A win would probably result in a repeat of last year's final against Ireland. Will it be third time lucky for the English?"

Nigel commented "I am very excited to be playing for England in the SMPT World Cup for the first time and hope to lead the team to its first victory in the competition."

Results are expected to be posted at https://shortmatplayerstour.com/world-cup/fixtures-schedule/ during the event which gets under way at 1300.
